The Man In the Yellow Rain Slicker

Image by Isaac Quesada on Unsplash

When I was five or six years old
I dreamed I saw a man in a yellow rain slicker
His broken body lying on the side of Coronado Parkway
Having been hit by a car.

I asked my mother if the man was dead.
She said simply, yes.
I watched emergency workers load his body on a stretcher.
They covered his face with a sheet.

My mother took my hand and said, "Come on."
She led me away from the scene.
I watched my mother and me walk away,
Shadows strolling towards the rising sun.

notes

Here is the prompt I played free and loose with.

The prompt asked participants if they'd ever had a dream where they died and suggested we describe said dream in a nocturne.

I've had plenty of dreams where I died. The dreams in which I'm dying are not the best I've ever had; in fact, they're usually quite traumatic. However, the dreams where I'm among the dead (spirits, not corpses) are usually quite pleasant.

Instead of describing a dream where I died, I chose to describe a strikingly vivid dream I had when I was very young. I had never in my life (at least not in this life) seen anything like the scene I described. I often had deep, disturbing, vivid dreams at that age which seemed rather out of context for one so young.

At some points in my life, I've behaved in an immature fashion, but I've often described myself as never having been a child. I was forced to grow up at a very young age. Some of my behaviors may have seemed childish, but they were coping mechanisms. Some of them were bizarre and ritualistic.

I've always had an absurdist sense of humor, but I've never been light-hearted.

I learned to read when I was four years old and graduated from Dr. Seuss to Edgar Allan Poe by the time I was six. I felt like Poe got me.

I found solace in writing. At six years old, I wrote such bangers as Bruce the Fish and a poem called The Old Lady Who Sat In A Chair. Bruce was a surprisingly cheerful character coming from the mind of a kid who read Poe. He was a kind-hearted fellow always ready to lend a hand to help a friend. The Old Lady Who Sat In A Chair won a first prize ribbon at the New Mexico State Fair.

I'm not sure if this poem qualifies as a nocturne as the scene in question takes place just before dawn and ends at sunrise. It's either an end-of-the-night nocturne or just a free verse poem about a gloomy little girl's grim dream. Your choice, I really don't care either way.

Come to me in the silence of the night;
    Come in the speaking silence of a dream;
        --Christina Rossetti, Echo

~Ornery Owl Has Spoken~

I was nowhere near as fetching a child as this delightful little sprite (I've always been breathtakingly ugly, to be honest) and I didn't live by the ocean (I've always lived in land-locked places) but I think this image captures the imaginative spark in my grim little head. Despite all my complexities, my fondest desire is simple. I've always wished that everyone could just be happy and live in peace.

Simple doesn't always mean possible, I'm afraid.

April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 10: Catch the Rainbow and More

Good morning, Poetry People. I started this morning on the Debussy train, but the poetry prompts put me in a different direction as I recalled a dream experience I had on the night of April 7 into April 8.

I write often of Gem who is no longer of this world. There was pain between us at the time of his departure because of my jealous and insecure nature. I believed he wanted to put as much distance between him and me as possible, but this dream/astral experience told me something else.

You're getting extra music today because I've a story to tell. I sang this second song a lot after Gem left because it reminded me of his beautiful eyes that seemed to change color depending on the light and it also speaks to the pain that remained unresolved between us. Ronnie James Dio's vocals are a treasure beyond measure.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I don't give a rat's ass what you think about my experience. Yes, it's possible that I concocted the whole thing in my fevered subconscious, but it was real to me, so don't be a cunt.

My experience was simply this: Gem and I danced together. He held me close while Catch the Rainbow played and I realized he didn't hate me as I feared he did. He really didn't recognize me or anyone else at the end of his life because the disease that destroyed his body also destroyed his mind, at least on a physical level. I was so grateful to him for bringing this dream to me.

At the end of our Earthly experience together, Gem's and my relationship was more Still Lovin' You than Catch the Rainbow thanks to my jealousy and insecurity. He did nothing wrong, but I feared he would find someone younger, prettier, better. He was always having to soothe my insecurities.

For the people who love to plop down platitudes encouraging those who have lost a partner to "find love again," please secure that shit. Overall for me, the love game has been a losing one. I have a long and storied history of picking truly awful men. The scars on my wrists are a testament to how that shit usually ends up.

Gem is not my sweetheart's real name. I called him that because he was a "Gem" among men. He was one of a kind and I won't find another like him. Also, in point of fact, I don't want to.

By the way, if this experience was simply a manifestation of my subconscious, I think I would have dreamed about the person who was the inspiration behind Ketil, a hero in my Tales from the Dreamlands series. April 8 was the anniversary date of his suicide 31 years ago.

Had "Ketil" appeared in my night visions, I would know better than to write him off as a figment of my subconscious. He wouldn't let me get away with it.

This song totally would not be Ketil/Lord Morbid's jam. He was a total metalhead.

And now, the prompts I used to create my ballad for Gem.

I hope that today's intensive session brought you some inspiration for your own poetry. Don't trouble yourself to give me romantic advice, just keep writing! I promise you I'll return the favor.

Anyway, I'm closing in on 60 years old and I have a fuck-ton of health problems. The last damn thing I want or need is another relationship to potentially fuck up. I've had the best. The only other men out there are either related to me or they're The Rest. Either way, it's a no from me.

NaPoWriMo 2020 Day 4 + April PAD Challenge 2020 Day 4 + April PAD Countdown Catch-Up Day 6: A Secret Wish

A secret wish that I keep hid
Is the hope that dreams really do come true
Like I thought when I was a kid
A secret wish

The way I believed when the world was new
And there was magic in everything that I did
Before harsh reality twisted the screw

I say of foolish beliefs I'm rid
That I've buried the dreams that never grew
But a quiet place in my soul loves what logic forbid
A secret wish

~cie~

notes
The NaNoWriMo prompt was (generally) write a poem about a dream.
The April PAD Challenge prompt was a wish poem.
The April PAD Challenge countdown prompt was a quiet poem.
The poem form is a Rondeau.

Heeding Haiku with Chèvrefeuille: Summer Solstice

At the beginning of the day on the summer solstice, I leave my body sleeping and walk in dreams to a place I will never see in life. I watch the sunrise through rocks mysteriously stacked long ago and wonder if it was possible that I was there in some form.

Do I have a connection to a time and place I could not possibly have known in my current reality, or do I merely wish that I was more important than I am? Did I once have wisdom and abilities forgotten by the passage of centuries and lifetimes, or am I merely a pathetic creature who wishes there was a possibility that I might not be as utterly hopeless and wretched as I appear?

There was a time when I believed in one God and a single savior. Then came the time that I believed in many deities and no specific savior. At this point, I neither believe nor disbelieve in any specific thing, except that I think the god postulated by most organized religious institutions is a construct created to give adherents carte blanche to behave cruelly.

is there someone there
a powerful entity
or are we alone?

~Cie~

Note:
It is not my intent to belittle anyone's faith. The thoughts I express are mine and mine alone. I neither believe nor disbelieve in any particular deity or set of deities, including the Christian god. My final paragraph is a criticism of the sorts of people who use their religion to behave as intolerant bigots and to cause harm to those who do not adhere to their dogma and edicts.

OctPoWriMo 2016: Day 21: Nature's Calling

Nature Calling

Hold the phone a moment
Here comes a component
Which I simply can't ignore
We who still are living
Can find no forgiving
When the waters start to pour
For when nature's calling
Dreams of water falling
Tell you "you can wait no more"

~Cie and Yeris~

Dedicated to every dreamer and astral traveler who has found themselves interrupted by Nature Calling

OctPoWriMo 2015: Day 12: Dream Time

Asleep
Beautiful dreamer
Come to me
Dream of being together
Eyes closed as you wander
Free to become who you are
Gone are the ties that bind you
Heart beating steady in your breast you breathe
Into the night your soul roams, come to me
Just as you are, just as you always should be
Kiss me softly in the light of the full moon now
Let me love you as I long to, as you long for
Make me happier than I ever imagined being until you came to me
Night folding us in its dark embrace as we draw ourselves together
Only our love matters, our love will last for all time
Precious moments found together under cover of the night sky
Quickly now, before the dawn tears us apart again
Realize the longing within both heart and soul
Sweetly soothe away the sorrows within us
Try to hold each other close
Undying love, unending embrace, unstoppable
Victorious are we together
Xenic we are
Yearning hearts
Zoneless

~Wanda~

Notes:
Xenic:  of, relating to, or employing a culture medium containing one or more unidentified organisms
I thought it would be fun to do a poem which consecutively used all the letters in the alphabet and counting, first up and then back down.

NaPoWriMo 2015: Day 19: One If By Landay

Craving Version 11
Photoshop Phoolery by The Real Cie

You can hide the truth with lying lips
But your dreams tell the secret of whom you long to kiss

~Thalia~

The Prompt:
for today’s prompt (optional, as always!), I’d like to challenge you to write a landay. Landays are 22-syllable couplets, generally rhyming. The form comes from Afghanistan, where women often use it in verses that range from the sly and humorous to the deeply sardonic and melancholy. The first line has nine syllables, the second has 13.

OctPoWriMo 2014: Day 27

For the Dreamers

Dreamer, don't save your dreams for only those times when you're sleeping
Don't let the only time you dream be when you are sleepy
Don't wait for a nap to overtake you to allow your dreams to do so
For dreams aren't only for those who sleep

Let your dreams come when you're awake
Let your dreaming take you to faraway places
Even if insomnia has you in its grips
Don't let that stop you from dreaming

With love,
Dolly

Word Prompts:
sleep (sleepy, sleeping)
dream (dreaming, dreamer)
nap
awake
insomnia

Note from The Cheese:
I knew I wouldn't be likely to find a picture of an elephant eating ice cream, but when I saw this image with its wonderful, dreamlike quality, I knew it would be perfect for Wanda's fabulously nonsensical verse. It would be the kind of dream you'd wake up laughing about, unless, of course, you have a phobia of floating elephants, Band-Aids, or ice cream.

N is for Naila's Nove Otto

Nighttime Memories

I try never to sleep at night
For that is when my thoughts take flight
And I remember how we were
To you it may be just a blur
But for me it was my whole world
Back when I was your dream-time girl
I won't let the memories stir

~Naila~

The Nove Otto poetry form was created by Scott J. Alcorn. It is a nine-lined poem with 8 syllables per line (isosyllabic). The rhyme scheme is as follows: aacbbcddc.

Example #1:
Canebrake Whispers

Three a.m. and yet still awake.
Mournful call sounds from the canebrake—
South Lou'siana’s black night steams.
The rocking chair creaks hollowly,
on the slat porch- it drums dully.
Chemical plants glowing lights gleam,
creating soft worlds all their own.
The cane whispers its eerie drone,
as night waits her impending dream.

My poem was inspired by this great classic tune:

Heart of Night

The night is filled with infinite lies
Most of them told by you
After what you've done, you ignore my cries
You think you're the only one whose feelings matter
You like to pretend you're misconstrued
But because of you, my heart is far sadder
I thought you were my sweetest dream
But this is completely untrue
For you have never been what you seem

Hold On To the Dream

Hold Onto the Dream
by
Illsa

No quarter is given
No means too extreme
When you're trying your damndest
Not to wake from a dream

You cling to the branches
Of the storm-shaken tree
Lest you lose your grip
And fall to reality

The painful realization
When one wakes from sweet scenes
Cause the Quixotic with great zeal
To hold onto their dreams

Falling from great heights
Can cause dire hurt
You plunge from the Heavens
And end up in the dirt

The most beautiful of fantasies
Is the sorriest of vanities

Eyes

Image created by Cie Cheesemeister

Eyes
by
Eleonora Usher-Rigby

My eyes have seen you
But yours have never noticed me
I am not a pretty thing
I am not the kind of woman that men see
Or notice
Or remember

My heart has loved you
But yours has never noticed me
If you are not a pretty thing
You are not the kind of woman that men love
Or dream about
Or notice

Plain women go about life quietly
No-one thinks of us twice
It is a sad thing to know
That I have zero chance of catching your eye
Even less than that of holding your heart
The Gods did not grant me beauty

One night I dreamed of you
Your soul forgot the vanity of your eyes
Your heart forgot for a time the rule
Against loving something that is not pretty
But then you woke and remembered
And I was forgotten as before

My eyes have seen you
My heart has loved you
I have dreamed of you
And you of me
But you do not remember
And you do not notice me

~Eleonora~
