30 Days of Haiga 2022: Your Own Rainbow

text

no clouds in the sky

although there are no rainbows

we can make our own

notes

I created the Haiga using Pixlr.com and a free use image by Prawny on Pixabay.

https://pixabay.com/illustrations/dinosaur-tyrannosaurus-beast-spikes-5995333/

I also used the Tanka Tuesday prompt.

https://wordcraftpoetry.com/2022/09/06/tankatuesday-weekly-poetry-challenge-no-288-tastetherainbow-color-poetry/

You are welcome to use the Haiga but please credit Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl and provide a link back to this blog.

This is not the best Haiku I ever wrote. It will never be used an example of how to write a perfect Haiku. It may, in fact, be used as an example of how NOT to write a Haiku. However, even though it is not one of my better Haiku, it is one of my favorites.

When I saw the cute monster while looking for pictures of rainbows, I knew he needed to be the star of my Haiga. He may not be the most monsterly monster. He certainly isn't scary. Still, I think he's one of the best monsters I've ever seen. He makes me smile and I hope he will bring a smile to anyone who sees him.

Love,

Ornery Owl

NaPoWriMo 2017: Day 2: Princess Trap

To trap a princess
And make her want to stay
Take a bath
So you smell pretty
A rank suitor
Will only drive away the lady fair
You don't want to scare
Your princess away with your smell

To trap a princess
Let yourself be the damsel in distress
So she can help you out of your mess
Then thank her kindly
With a cup of coffee
And some homemade cake
Or one bought from the baker
If you cannot bake

If you wish to trap a princess
You can't be busy all the time
Always running to and from work
And on errand after errand
If there are never enough hours in the day
Your princess will stay away
She doesn't even know that you exist
Because you're never there

If you wish to trap a princess
You must go where the princesses are
Take it from a lady who knows
You won't find her in a bar
(Well, probably)
Perhaps you enjoy art or reading
Or theater, or learning to bake cakes
To trap princesses with

"You have to get out there, Auntie Thalia"
"You have to say hello and don't be shy"
"And if the first one doesn't like you"
"She wasn't the right princess for you"
"Give it another try."
"Because you're the most awesome Auntie"
"I know there's someone special out there"
"Who will love you just as much as I do--only romantic."

My niece is a very smart girl
And maybe if I follow her recipe
I'll have my princess come to me
Before this body of mine
Is too old to ride into the sunset
With the lady of my dreams

~Thalia~
With many thanks to my niece Kia, who is 13 going on 35

OctPoWriMo 2015: Day 27: My Happy Ending

My Happy Ending

Once upon a time
There was a fanciful fellow
With the fey he liked to play
Truth is, he himself was fey

He was quite a waggish sort
Playful and mischievous
But ultimately harmless
Ever so curious about the world too

He kept the truth about himself
Hidden from nearly everyone
Until he took his quizzical mind to college
Where it wasn't just books that gave him knowledge

Being a quaint sort of chap
He was sort of easy to take advantage of
Especially when he fell in love
For many years he allowed himself to be abused

He may well have continued to abide
The occasional slap or shove
But he could no longer tolerate the cheating
Or the words that cut him to the quick

He thought that twenty-one years
Was probably all that anyone was given to find love
And he'd thrown it down the drain
But he didn't want another of the same

Five years went by, and our fey fellow
Was quite used to being single
But then his sister invited him to a Halloween party
She said, just come and mingle

Being a fairly sociable sort, he accepted the invite
At least he knew there'd be beer and snacks
Then his sister introduced him to a fellow
With a smile so sweet our fey friend forgot his own name

Once our man regained his composure
He and his sister's chum began to chat
Several hours later, they'd not run out of things to say
So they made a date for the following Saturday

Everything was so perfect
Our poor fey guy was terrified
He remembered his former lover's lies
He was afraid to fall in love again

But this new man was patient and kind
He gave the worried fellow plenty of time
Plus kind encouragement and little tokens of affection
Things could only continue in a certain direction

Seven weeks after their first meeting, the wonderful gent
Asked our fey fellow if he wanted to take the next step
Oh, how he did, but he was so afraid
What if he was a disappointment?
He didn't want to lose this good thing he'd found

As the sun broke on the horizon
The fey fellow rolled over
And looked into the beautiful blue eyes and smiling face
Of a sweet angel, who kissed him and professed his love

They moved in together five months later
Six years later they officially married
This year they celebrate their seventh anniversary

That sweet fellow's name is Dylan
He is the one that our fey chap--whose name is Adam--loves for all eternity

~Adam~

Notes:
Sorry, I can't see my monitor. My eyes are leaking.
Maybe it's not the best poem ever. But it's straight from the heart. I found the love that I thought only happened to other people. I love him more each day we're together.
I'm resisting the temptation to do any heavy editing on this. I want it to be real and raw, not polished or perfectified. Is that even a word?

OctPoWriMo 2015: Day 24: A Crew of Creatures and a Slew of Seasons

A Crew of Creatures and a Slew of Seasons

Here is the imaginary tale
Of a little snail
Who slid off to find the summer

I share the adventure of a frog
Who lived down in the bog
He fell off a log and into autumn

Image Source: Michael Stirling at publicdomainpictures.net

Here is the drama of a lizard
Who got caught up in a blizzard
She went underground for winter

Like a living fantasy
Butterflies fly free
In a land of eternal spring

~Thalia~

Note:
Today's prompt asked us to create a story poem. I've always been the creative type, and I love doing this sort of thing.
Sadly, I was never able to make a career of it. Happily, my niece and nephew always loved their Auntie Thalia's stories and even her drawings of questionable ability.
They're getting a little old for story time now (nephew is ten, niece just turned twelve five days ago) but they aren't quite too old to be too cool for a tale just yet--happily for me!

OctPoWriMo 2014: Day 4: Real Magic

Real Magic

With a flick of the wrist
My wand I did twirl
Hoping I could impress
A certain beautiful girl

I wanted to wow her
With my mystical prowess
The resulting blast from my wand
Left me eyebrow-less

My skills wielding magic
Were far less than fantastic
When I turned myself into a toad
The situation became drastic

That special lady, however
Had her own kind of magic
She came to my rescue
Before things became tragic

She gave me a kiss
Which turned me back into me
She said that was the best thing
I could possibly be

I married that lady
And all these years later
We have daughters three
Our lives couldn't be greater

We may not have a palace
But we have each other
And our three wonderful girls
Have a loving dad and mother

Magic is real
But you don't need potions
Just a few leaps of faith
And lots of love and devotion

So that is my story
Of how my wish came true
I wish that all of your wishes
Would come true for you

~Seth~

Notes:
I didn't know where I was going with this when I started, but I had a lot of fun writing it! Except for the literal wand-waving and turning into a toad, all of it is true.
I married my high school sweetheart, who saw a hero in a tall, lanky, bookish guy, and we have three beautiful, intelligent, and creative daughters. The youngest just started her freshman year of college. The oldest is finishing her Masters in psychology and intends to pursue a doctorate. The middle one is an intern for an independent ladies' clothing design company. She has a goal of being involved in creating attractive, fashionable clothes for plus size women.
I do believe in magic and, in fact, mysticism. Magic isn't flashy and over the top like it is in movies and television. It's generally very subtle and you have to watch for it, or you may miss it. I'm glad I didn't miss out on mine!

The Ballad of Benjamin

Western Leopard Toad

The Ballad of Benjamin

Benjamin was his name, oh
And a happy frog was he
Despite the fact that he could not see
The rest of the world dwelt in misery

Benjamin wished to share this feeling
That welled up inside his soul
With bird and fox and mole
To spread joy was his goal

Without working eyes
Benjamin dared not travel long
So he sang a heartfelt song
In a voice both clear and strong

The other creatures in the land
Came to listen to the tune
In Benjamin's voice of bassline boom
As he bestowed his gleeful boon

Soon Benjamin's goal was met
Through his song of gleeful mirth
Happiness spread around the earth
Where once there was a dearth

Benjamin's good deed brought him goodness in return
Mother Nature blessed him with the gift of sight
He saw his reflection in the light
At first it gave him quite a fright

Just a moment later, Benjamin laughed at the surprise
"It seems I'm not a frog at all," he said.
"It turns out I'm a toad instead."
But not a single tear was shed

For Benjamin was a happy fellow
Regardless of his outsides

~Aurora~

Note:
I combined two prompts to create this whimsical poem. The Prompts Blog asked us to speculate happiness being invented by a blind frog named Benjamin. It's Open Link Tuesday at Imaginary Garden With Real Toads, and they presented the above picture of a Western Leopard Toad. Thus, the Ballad of Benjamin sprang into being. I hope it made you smile a little.

Note from The Cheese:
I knew I wouldn't be likely to find a picture of an elephant eating ice cream, but when I saw this image with its wonderful, dreamlike quality, I knew it would be perfect for Wanda's fabulously nonsensical verse. It would be the kind of dream you'd wake up laughing about, unless, of course, you have a phobia of floating elephants, Band-Aids, or ice cream.

Nervous Norvis' Café

Ode to Nervous Norvis' Café
by
Trent Lane

Nervous Norvis has excellent taste
In coffee at his little place
Norvis’ caffeinated café
Will blow you away
Like a rocket heading for space

~Trent Lane~

S’up, Netherworld Caffeine addicts? I wanted to write this epic limerick to tell you about my boss, Nervous Norvis, ‘cause he’s totally rad.
Norvis is a thoroughly modern mummy. His pyramid sits right behind his café, cutting down on commute time. His backyard is just a few steps away, so he can take a quick break to tend to his little dog Pharaoh if the need arises.
Norvis sells only fair trade coffee, so you can feel good about catching your A.M. buzz. Or P.M. Whatever.
For unfortunate souls like The Cheesemeister who can’t drink caffeine, Norvis also has decaf. It doesn’t taste like frog piss, the way a lot of decaf does. Not that I actually, like, know what frog piss tastes like or anything. I just figure it probably tastes a lot like decaf coffee, you know.
So, like, what I’m saying is that even though work is a four letter word and stuff, working with Norvis actually doesn’t seem like work, so I don’t mind doing it. So come on down and let me make you a latte sometime. Or an espresso. Whatever.

Stairway to Heaven on Earth

We ascend
The steep stairway to
A little
Heaven on
Earth made Heavenly because
We are together

~Adam~

This poem is a Shadorma. The prompt comes from Mindlovemisery's Menagerie. The theme is stairs.
A shadorma is composed of six non-rhyming lines (sestina or sextet) and the syllable pattern is 3-5-3-3-7-5.  It can have as many stanzas as you like, just as long as each stanza follows the syllable pattern mentioned above.
I thought about writing another stanza, but I have a tendency to get too wordy if I don't rein myself in. Sometimes less is more!
I wrote the poem with my fiancé, Dylan, in mind. He brings a bit of Heaven to Earth for me every day.
