November PAD Challenge 2023 Day 1: Wraiths of Debts Past

Image by Circe Denyer from Pixabay

Dear Ms. Owl,

The Ethereal Wraiths of Debts Past align with your never-expanding wallet to collect the far-from-towering pile of copper you have remaining in your coffers. This is an earnest attempt to fleece you of whatever paltry sum you may manage to manifest. Like enchanted spiders lurking in your empty bank account for any sign of activity, we welcome virtual payments of magic money.

Do not make the mistake of believing you can escape your obligations by dying. Our home office is located in the Ninth Circle.

November PAD Challenge 2022: Day 7: Adapt or Die

"Adapt or die, foolish little fool!" the intimidating alien rumbled.

I, however, refused to be shaken, no matter how he grumbled.

"Hah!" I snorted. "For something so impressive in appearance, you certainly lack cleverness.

"Anyone can see that I am far from little.

"My ass is large, and so is my middle."

"Yes, and you've had to find the key to adapting to such undesired conditions, haven't you?" the being inquired pensively.

"Your luck has not been exactly stellar, wouldn't you agree?

"What you found when you were transported over the rainbow was not what you hoped to see.

"When you shuffled off to the pier to see if your sacred ship had come in,

"Mawkish mediums informed you that your destiny was arriving at the airport too far in the distance for you to find redemption."

"Indeed, and when I asked them to elaborate, they promised to do so for a small fee equal to several of my paychecks," I replied. "I had a suspicion that they might have lied, so I decided I didn't care a shingle for their advice and proceeded to do things my way from that day forward."

"And how is that working out for you?" the alien, who now suspiciously resembled Dr. Phil, pressed.

"Probably better than the flashy fairy tale I once believed was my destiny," I sentimentally surmised, as glimmers of dreams of what might have been glittered in my eyes, overflowing down my face. "I'm pleased that I'm not surrounded by fake people to annoy me, but there have been times in my life when loneliness threatened to destroy me.

"I've discovered first-hand that no one cares how the disabled, elderly, and downtrodden fare.

"If you aren't young and you aren't pretty, nobody wants to see you anywhere.

"The liberal elite as much as the rigid right would prefer that the likes of me die and decrease the surplus population.

"Society cares only about the up-and-coming, not those nearing their destination.

"Age bias is rampant, the outsides given more weight than what lies within.

"If I were at all religious, I'd say it's a goddamn sin.

"Being a caustic agnostic, I'll just say it's a crying shame.

"Every year I hope for improvement, and every year it's always the same."

"Yet still you keep on kicking," the alien said, impressed. "I hope to meet more folk like you in my travels--ugly, angry, disabled, fat old women are the best!"

As the alien took off in his spaceship, I couldn't help but grin.

If we'd care more about what's on the inside, a better world could begin.

Hangry Wyrm sez:
"I really ate this story up. Five out of five stars! Can we have breakfast now?"

Get your groove on with this melodic deep house mix.

Here's the link in case you can't see the player.

Here's another Deep House mix in case you happen to be bogged down with formatting an hour later. Like, you know, not me. I never get bogged down with formatting, or editing, or, you know, anything, because I'm completely perfect and do everything right the first time. First draft? Hah! You mean only draft, Sunshine, because I'm just that good!

I'm off to find someplace to hide my metric butt-ton of bullshit now. Here's the link in case you can't see the player.

notes and prompts used

The prompt requests:
"For this challenge, let’s go on a wild walk together. Report on what you’ve found and the lessons you’ve learned."

While my piece did not address nature as such, it addresses the sometimes difficult lessons I've learned about myself in my nearly 60 years walking this planet. I honestly don't think I would have survived those "Hollywood dreams" I had in my youth. I'm a sensitive soul, though I seem thick-skinned.

Today's challenge asks participants to create a poem about adaption.

I almost forgot about this prompt. I'll probably play catch-up with it over the next few days. Today's suggestion is:

"Another form of being has just communicated something to you...Write down 5-10 words, to fix the moment forever in your mind then use those words to write about something else."

This prompt gave me the idea of the alien communicating with me.

30 Days of Haiga 2022: Boldly Bowling Badly

when I boldly bowl

my lack of skill is canon

low score the story

notes

I created today's silly Haiga using the Saturday Mix prompt

https://mindlovemiserysmenagerie.wordpress.com/2022/09/17/double-take-saturday-mix-17-september-2022/

And a free-use image from Stock Snap on Pixabay.

I blended everything up using Pixlr.com

Hopefully, my text art and image manipulation skills are better than my bowling abilities, which are pretty much nonexistent.

I totally did not create this post on Sunday and then backdate it to Saturday.

You are free to use the Haiga and laugh at my bad bowling. For the Haiga, please credit Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl and provide a link back to this blog. For the bowling, please don't mention it.

30 Days of Haiga 2022: Unpersoned

text

if you disagree

in even the smallest way

from trending dogma

you are swiftly unpersoned

with no chance for redemption

notes

I created this Haiga using Pixlr.com and a free use image by cg world on Pixabay.

You are welcome to use the Haiga, but please credit Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl and provide a link back to this blog.

The content of the Senryu/Tanka was inspired by a prompt from Mindlovemisery's Menagerie.

https://mindlovemiserysmenagerie.wordpress.com/2022/09/07/story-swap-7-controversy/

The prompt was to write about something potentially controversial.

However, these days it is impossible to have any kind of nuanced discussion about certain subjects. Doing so might lead to ostracization and worse. Critical thinking is in short supply and, to quote the late Dr. Martin Luther King following the assassination of Malcolm X, "I think we have got to learn to disagree without being violently disagreeable."

Dr. King also said:

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. ... Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

The following is an editorial from the Cincinnati Enquirer. It is worth a read.

Crawling Back to You from the Blue Past

Image taken 7 May 2017 at the Denver Aquarium.

The above image is the property of Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl/Naughty Netherworld Press/Poetry of the Netherworld. You are welcome to use it, but please credit one of the above if you do.

I'm going to share a poem now. You can read the notes after the poem if you're so inclined, or ignore them if you'd rather. Whatever.

It's a long-un. You have been warned!

I don't believe I had a sundae
Sundae on that Sunday
Sunday when we celebrated your birthday
Birthday number 27 in 2017.

2017 was another year filled with challenges
Challenges in a challenging life
Life often feels like I'm swimming in sludge
Sludge that won't budge while wearing boots of cement.

Cement clogs my mental abyss while I drink my coffee
Coffee leaves a vivid taste of bitterness on my tongue
Tongue known to smudge conversation with awkward utterances
Utterances the Shiny Happy People need the Rosetta Stone to translate.

Translate my colorful, shimmering stories to something bleak as charcoal
Charcoal stains the charred landscape in a place with no butterflies
Butterflies have departed the world on tiny pixie wings
Wings on the wind, never to return.

Return now to the beginning of this rambling discourse
Discourse regarding the matter of me not having a sundae
Sundae on the Sunday when we celebrated your birthday
"Birthdays should be jubilant," proclaim the Shiny Happy People; you are happiest when things are low-key.

Low-key Loki trips the light fantastic through the leaves
Leaves sprinkled in imaginary sand in my mind
Mind gone wool-gathering like it is wont to do
Do you remember that day when we had lunch with the fishes?

Fishes swam beside us, but we didn't go beach-combing
Beachcombing requires a beach, but there was none to be found
Found in our landlocked land surrounded by mountains
Mountains where the sun shines gingery golden.

Golden is the name of the town I grew up in
In a place where I was as out of place as a butterfly in a wetsuit
Wetsuit or toga, I was always dressed wrong
Wrong for the snobs in that town of my youth.

Youth is long gone, I bless the day it passed on
On into the past, at last, leaving me the chance
The chance to heal, but healing comes slowly
Slowly the memories return of that day.

Day when we celebrated your 27th year
Year when I didn't have a sundae on Sunday
Sunday came and went with no hot fudge or whipped cream
Cream-colored clouds floated by in the sky.

359 words

Today's poem is a loop poem. Loop Poetry is a poetry form created by Hellon. There are no restrictions on the number of stanzas nor on the syllable count for each line. In each stanza, the last word of the first line becomes the first word of line two, last word of line 2 becomes the first word of line 3, last word of line 3 becomes the first word of line 4. This is followed for each stanza. The rhyme scheme is abcb.

Variations:

1. Stanzas, writers choice on the number, no rhyming, the last word, first word scheme is maintained.

2. One long stanza, no limit on number of lines, no rhyming scheme, the last word, first word scheme is maintained.

3. Couplets mixed with 4 line stanzas, the last word, first word scheme is maintained in the stanzas. It can also be used in the couplets. Rhyme scheme is ab, cc, defg, hh, ii, jklm, nn, oo.

I went with Variation #1.

I have a new idea. I've always wanted to become more consistent with my photography shares. I have folder upon folder of photos rescued from my deceased iPhone 7. I plan to share these photos and combine them with a poem, every Sunday-ish. When I've done sharing a folder, if it's a big one like Folder #3 from 2017 is, I will have a new poetry book!

Once Upon a December 2021: Once Upon a Yesterday

Once upon a December yesterday

We shattered each other's hearts saying unsuitable things

I press my eyelids closed and try to remember

Standing by your side as the cardboard sea rose and fell

Butterflies danced in my soul, and I wanted to swim away in your eyes

Violet, sapphire, sage, and all the colors of the broken rainbow

You seemed to drink me in as I told you stories of my strange life

The longing look you gave me made me feel bubbly

As if my spirit danced to the music of eternity

Before I met you, I always felt like a secondary character in my own story

Suppressed memories from my traumatized younger years caused my soul to splinter

I hurried in a flurry on a hedonistic flight

Chasing each new escapade as if resting was a crime

Endless adventure and celebration were my cross to bear

Playing the part of the lost soul to perfection

My addiction to adrenaline a drain on my psyche

My mind lacked cohesion at the moment in time when you found me

Dumped near the milestone where I gave up hope for better

I was hanging on by a thread as slippery as spaghetti

Not much wanting to live but not quite ready to die

Like I was lost in a corn maze when the state fair left town

On entering a tunnel, I left hope by the roadside

I threw in the towel and gave up on the world

I swore that never again would I give my heart

But I melted in your hug because it felt like you meant it

I laughed when you ran through the sprinkler like a kid

We teased and joked as we lounged together

Shivering in the cold trailer, trying to stay warm

When you took the garter from my plus size thigh

I couldn’t believe that you could like what you saw

My insecurity was a thorn in your side

I understand now that you really tried

I sometimes still feel you when I’m driving alone

When I need someone to love

You’re the only one I think of

From now until eternity

I hope that you are thriving on the other side

For Gem

November 2021 Remix: Spiraling

Image by Spencer Byles on One Big Photo

Dear Me as I Used to Be, just wanting to experience all the colors life offers

Buckle up, Soul, and get ready

To careen down to yon planet and inflict your incendiary presence

as fall leaves fall

in this season of contemplation

I reflect on summer's fading song

be sensible and bestow upon your will a ferrule of encouragement

pull up your muffler and silence contrary thoughts

that may lead you to investigating odd ruins

sometimes I dare dream

that someday we will accept

people as they are

I commit myself to following the motivating recipe as closely as possible

my song for autumn

singing the health of your soul

in a society whose members value Christmas shopping over taking care of each other

humans have

no love

for anything we have deemed lesser

sometimes I sit alone and consider

family expeditions of spent years

I remember her

thirteen moons times seventeen

I know better now

from inside my bubble, or maybe from outside yours

I inscribed your name in the book of delights

I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in and found myself in a mess once again.

it must be your intention to become great

you must believe in and aspire to a surplus

step it up, speed up, hurry up and wait

It is still within our power to change the end of our tales

We don’t want to do anything that would inconvenience us

Mystic mall cops and maroon feather dusters

Time does not crawl, it hurtles forth like a bullet train

Crushing my memories beneath its merciless wheels

It took loved ones and ideas from me without a backward glance

But if I could find a filament of the hopefulness I felt

Perhaps I could sew patches over the holes in my heart

Maybe I could recall the feeling of the third Thursday in November

Pretend that tomorrow will just begin new.

New novel styles sweep us into the now.

Now everything we built lies covered in ashes.

Ashes of things that now seem unimportant somehow.

how would you bake pecan pie

good enough for compliments?

Lost and blue without a friend

humans, greedy and stupid

think with their stomachs

I hope that you know

I'm always glad to see you

beneath the sea of ubiquitous pretty faces

and impossibly slender bodies

courtesy of cocaine and starvation

I can still remember childhood thanksgivings

rising fresh in the morning full of hope

climbing from wrinkled sheets, up for breakfast

break the yolk of the egg to mop up with toast

the bird escaped clean

There are those who proclaim that I should be grateful

For my opportunity to star in the theatre of pain

running out of time as the money drips in and the reserves dry up

there is still no triumph as I trot through pelting dust to my grave

To the untrained eye

Some might find it a bit absurd

when I think back on the things that were

something blue glistens in my moss-rather-than-emerald eyes

how much longer can mother earth bend

before the bough breaks

and her children come crashing down?

Once Upon a December: Not There Yet

Image by Dang Ngo on One Big Photo

Do you think I should take a page

From Dash and Lily's book of dares

And go flying down the stairs

Should I walk across a waterfall

Where I shouldn't be at all?

One of the things that I will grieve

When it is my time to leave

Is the ability to write silly rhymes

To occupy my worried mind

I've really just begun to live

I feel I have so much to give

I hope that I will have the chance

To let my soul be free to dance

To create a few stories along the way

I hope that I'll be allowed to stay

Please let me be here for a while

So when my time comes I can depart with a smile.

I am learning to take things slow

To follow my heart and just let go

Of all my old remorse and regret

I've gotta admit

I ain't got there yet.
