Poetry Prompts and Inspiration Day 6 April PAD Challenge and NaPoWriMo

Good morning, Poetry People. Or afternoon, evening, or whatever. I have an incredible video to share with you while discussing how I used today's prompts in my creation. This Roger Waters reboot of Comfortably Numb features a striking dystopian landscape complete with damaged buildings, bomb blasts, and crowds of displaced people. It is a stark reminder of the conditions some people have endured in the past and are currently facing now. Here is what Roger has to say about the video.

Before lockdown I had been working on a demo of a new version of ‘Comfortably Numb’ as an opener to our new show "This Is Not A Drill”. I pitched it a whole step down, in A Minor, to make it darker and arranged it with no solos, except over the outro, where there is a heartrendingly beautiful vocal solo from one of our new sisters Shanay Johnson. It’s intended as a wakeup call, and a bridge towards a kinder future with more talking to strangers, either in "The Bar” or just “Passing in the Street" and less slaughter “In Some Foreign Field.” Here it is. Love R.

The video is by Sean Evans. The mix is by Gus Seyffert.

I think it is quite rude of ProWritingAid to tell Sean Evans that he should spell his name differently. Sean, you can be Stan, Dean, or Sian Evans or you can be Sean Evan. Your name cannot be Sean Evans, Boyo! At least not according to ProWritingAid.

I mean, what the hell?

I guess if I ever again have a moment to write a smackerel of fan fiction, I'll have Sam and Dean Winchester go incognito as Sam and Dean Evans. Yes, Grammarly and ProWritingAid, the word I intended to use is smackerel. I'm not writing about fish.

Overall, I find programs such as Grammarly and ProWritingAid useful, but sometimes I find them ridiculous. Especially when they tell me a character or a real person can't be named the name I've just typed. That assertion is simply uncouth.

Thanks to Scottish Tommy for posting this and many other wonderful videos. Please be sure to check out his Odysee channel. The link for this video is above.

I wrote my poem prior to discovering this video, but I think they complement each other perfectly. I can't share the poem here because I am submitting it to Dragon Soul Press for potential inclusion in the forthcoming Soul Ink anthology. I will provide a synopsis of the work.

The poem is a Haibun. The theme is death. I focus on the differences between the kinds of deaths I've witnessed during my lifetime, including the passing of family members, patients, and pets as opposed to casualties of war. I have never had the firsthand experience of seeing people killed by an invading army. Such a thing seems unimaginable, and yet there are people living with this experience every day.

The Senryu at the end of the Haibun seems, on the surface, to compare a waterfall to experiences and memories.

I have encountered much disagreement about what a Haibun should encompass. There are those who say a Haibun should always be non-fiction. There are those who say that the Haiku or Senryu at the end should be unrelated to the subject in the prose portion. I say the poet should write their Haibun about whatever they wish to write it about and have the Haiku/Senryu relate to the prose portion or not as they see fit.

I'm not a professor of poetic knowledge. I have no degree in poetry. I'm not even Japanese. I have loved Japanese poetry forms ever since my class studied Japan when I was in the fourth grade. I'm self-taught, and I'm not a stickler. I say Haibun away in whatever manner suits you.

If you're wondering how long a Haibun should be, I usually confine my prose portion to 100 words, but I have occasionally written longer Haibun.

Now for the prompts.

Today's NaPoWriMo prompt asks participants to:

Take a look around Poetry International for a poem in a language you don’t know. Now, read the poem to yourself, thinking about the sound and shape of the words, and the degree to which they remind you of words in your own language. Use those correspondences as the basis for a new poem.

I found the thought-provoking prose poem I Have Thought that I Thought of Death by Estonian poet Jaan Kaplinski.

Trying to do the thing of comparing the sound and shape of Estonian words to English made my brain hurt, so I simply used the theme of the poem.

I used the prompt word waterfall to create the Senryu portion of the Haibun. I found this prompt in one of the first posts from Chèvrefeuille's Carpe Diem blog.

Unfortunately, Chèvrefeuille has been unable to keep up with blogging during the past few years because of personal circumstances. He has left the blog up as an archive and it contains a wealth of prompts and poems for the seeker's enjoyment.

Here is the music I listened to while creating this post. I was pretty intensely "up in my feelings" about my poem and the new Comfortably Numb video. This powerful game soundtrack from Destiny 2 helped me become energized yet grounded so I could continue with my work. I find video game soundtracks very useful as background music while creating.

November PAD Challenge 2021: Another Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving Flies By

step it up, speed up, hurry up and wait
never mind divine design or providential purpose
achieve at an unnatural speed and don't be late

it must be your intention to become great
you must believe in and aspire to a surplus
step it up, speed up, hurry up and wait

whatever dream you have, you must not hesitate
those moving slow and noiseless will be left in the dust
achieve at an unnatural speed and don't be late

the pressure from society will not abate
you cannot be impartial if you wish to join the upper crust
step it up, speed up, hurry up and wait

if you make furtive listening your finest trait
if glitter and jewels are eminent objects of your lust
achieve at an unnatural speed and don't be late

pose as a friend to control your rival's fate
listen for clues to earn your victim's trust
step it up, speed up, hurry up and wait
achieve at an unnatural speed and don't be late

~ornery owl~

For Ebenezer Scrooge and Charles Dickens and for my dad

notes
The title and the dedication may seem to be a bit of a non-sequitur, so let me explain.

The social climber who desires achievement and advancement of their position at any cost will not have a place in their cold cash register of a heart for trifles such as old-fashioned Thanksgiving celebrations.

My father loved holiday celebrations. He began reading Charles Dickens Christmas Carol every year from the time I was quite young. I believe I was only around four years old when this tradition commenced. I looked forward to it every year.

My father died close to Thanksgiving in 2010 so this time of year takes on certain importance for me.

In some ways, my father died believing that he was a failure because he never amassed significant wealth. However, he gave us many gifts that were far more important than money.

My father gave me stories.

Scrooge, the spirits, and the lessons they taught have been my companions from early childhood and I am thankful for them.

I only wish that I could let my father know.

Helloween 2021 Day 28: I Cancelled...

I have canceled
the fear of what you think
of what I may think
or what I may be
what you make of me
whether I am unsophisticated
because I have never been to Paris

I have canceled
the fear of your judgment
of what I believe
or cannot believe
I believe in ghosts
or at least the possibility of
your opinions will no longer scare us

~ornery owl~

prompts
"I canceled..."

Write a duodora about a human attribute that irritates you and put a Halloween spin on it. Snobbishness and closed-mindedness are two attributes that grind my gears. Ghosts are associated with Halloween.

General theme of Samhain and those who have departed the material world.

http://www.octpowrimo.com/2021/10/octpowrimo-day-29-paris.html

"What is Paris to you?"

In this case, it's a concept used to convey an idea or emotion.

"Do I believe in ghosts?"

I believe in the possibility of ghosts, and I've seen some shit.

I don't care if you believe in ghosts or not. I don't have any intention of arguing with anyone about it. I'm just tired of people with "my way or the highway" attitudes and closed minds.

Helloween 2021 Day 8: Dark Night of the Soul in Neon (Senryu)

Free use image by Manny Moreno on Unsplash

long ago I dreamed
how I would shake up the world
I would be adored

dance floor at the club
shakes as boiling hormones rise
electronic beat

disappointment comes
everything is illusion
dark night of the soul

something blue rises
remembering devotion
to others' false gods

I reflect on life
with every foolish action
I wished to be loved

~cie~

the prompts

Prompt: Something Blue

From the post:
The cadralor is a poem of 5, unrelated, numbered stanzaic images, each of which can stand alone as a poem, is fewer than 10 lines, and ideally constrains all stanzas to the same number of lines. Imagery is crucial to cadralore: each stanza should be a whole, imagist poem, almost like a scene from a film, or a photograph. The fifth stanza acts as the crucible, alchemically pulling the unrelated stanzas together into a love poem. By “love poem,” we mean that your fifth stanza illuminates a gleaming thread that runs obliquely through the unrelated stanzas and answers the compelling question: “For what do you yearn?”

So...yeah. I did five Senryus, each of which are related to the photograph, to each other, and to the gleaming oblique thread running through them.

An Unexpected Visitor

Free use image by Waldkunst on Pixabay

on a dismal night while making a casserole
one eldritch horror caused extramundane disturbance
on its arrival bursting from the earth like a mole
the clatter of bricks brought me great perturbance

never have I before heard such a deafening whistle
not like the hooning sound from its numerous orifices
nothing I could find would make an effective missile
not enough to damage its hardened protuberances

even if I had a tome of arcane magic
eldritch horrors must be known to be dismissed
everything pointed to my ending being tragic
ensuing thoughts of doom made me turn agonist

very many possibilities did cross my mind
visions of my last moments grim and gory
visceral thoughts of murder most unkind
viciously the creature leaned in, ate the casserole, end of story

~cie~

Perfect Imperfection

Free use image copyright Stefan Keller on Pixabay

worthy of
more than you could dream of
you lie in time's eternal embrace

light and dark
a shadow warrior
with all your perfect imperfections

I wish that
I had been worthy of
being held in your loving embrace

you were more
than you will ever know
while I am less than nothing at all

LIfestyles of Tone Deaf Rich Twits

I can't stop wondering why vapid folk

always seem to be the ones with money

and why people that they wouldn't spit on

ooh and ahh about their selfish choices

why do awful people get to journey

down whatever path they choose on a whim

leaving a trail of abandoned notions

for the peons to clean up after them

why are people all too fascinated

with a Kardashian or anyone

who makes the most self-absorbed decision

everything is always about themselves

who knew milk on cereal could be good?

wait till you try butter on your toast, twerp

Strange World

Free use image copyright Adryanah on Pixabay

I can't escape you or your frozen eyes
eyes blue like Earth's skies with a solar gold ring
not indigo or tangerine
you have my heart on a vermilion string

noon feels like midnight
I want to hide and not be seen
you have my heart on a vermilion string
not indigo or tangerine

my youthful dreams fade into dusk
I no longer see color in anything
not indigo or tangerine
you have my heart on a vermilion string

never would I return to that place
or to that vapid, toxic scene
you have my heart on a vermilion string
not indigo or tangerine

~cie~

Mirrored Refrain

Know the Notes
The title of the poem is a nod to Iron Maiden's 1980 song "Strange World," one of my all-time favorites. I have never belonged to this world, so I think it's a strange place to try to live. Or, perhaps, I'm just strange and really unlikable. I don't discount that possibility.

The first line of the poem is from Rainbow's 1982 song, "Stone Cold."

Been there, done that.

Sang that song a lot when my boyfriend dumped me.

This poem isn't about him. It was 35 years ago, and literal years can go by without a thought of him crossing my mind. He isn't interesting enough to inspire poetry being written about him in any case.

This poem isn't about anyone in particular. It's more about the personification of a feeling or idea.

Snag more somber poetry here.

Requiem for Annabel Lee

Image by Mystic Art Design on Pixabay

Annabel Lee, the forever girl
an eternal child is she
voice soft and low with eyes like a doe
meek and demure but not jittery

nights she roams her capacious castle
never displaying roister
with eyes like a doe, voice soft and low
it's not allowed for her to boister

silently crosses the dining room
folding arms over her breast
voice soft and low with eyes like a doe
but her soul is unable to rest

her strapless dress makes her feel chilly
shoulders and elbows exposed
with eyes like a doe, voice soft and low
a young girl being groomed like a rose

admonished to remain blind to self
a kitten sweet and pretty
voice soft and low with eyes like a doe
must take care not to seem too witty

the strings of the weeping mandolin
dirge plays for Annabel Lee
with eyes like a doe, voice soft and low
she saw no other way to be free

~cie~

briefly the notes
Basically a poem about the expectations placed on girls to be little ladies with no thoughts of their own. Raised with their ideas belittled if acknowledged at all, some girls act out in self-destructive ways when adolescence arrives. Anyway, I did, and I wasn't the only one.
