30 Days of Haiga: Summer Goes to Sleep

notes if you want 'em
A perfect poem to wrap up this year's 30 Days of Haiga, I think!

But does this mean there will be no more Haiga this year?

No way!

There may well be Haiga tomorrow!

What I'm not sure there will be this year is OctPoWriMo or the October Spooky Writing Prompts. There have been no stirrings on either the official OctPoWriMo blog or the Writers Handbook Tumblr to indicate that either will be transpiring.

I know that the person behind the Writers Handbook is active. They had a new post yesterday. However, it wasn't a Spooky Writing Prompts post.

I'm not sure about Morgan, who usually organizes OctPoWriMo. I hope she's okay. There hasn't been much activity on either of her blogs or on her Facebook or Twitter.

There is no way that I could manage being a decent host for an event like OctPoWriMo, but if Morgan isn't going to host the event this year, I might be able to come up with a quick list of prompts. As the late, great Tom Petty said, the waiting is the hardest part, but I guess we'll wait till tomorrow and see what happens.

30 Days of Haiga: Precarious

Background Image by Kyle Green
Text art and effects by Ornery Owl (Cara Hartley)

An Essay in which Ornery Owl Ruminates on Realism

Does today’s Haiga offering represent realism?

The effects that I have applied to the picture evidently do not.

The original image may. It is simply a picture of ducks walking over cracking ice.

Depending on one’s interpretation, the Senryu accompanying the now-transformed image could fall into the category of realism.

It is no surprise

When a crack forms in the ice

Walking on a lake

The above verse could be interpreted through the lens of realism. If one walks over the ice covering a lake, it would be distressing, but not surprising, to see cracks forming in the ice.

However, it is probably evident to anyone familiar with poetry, poets, or, if you are supremely unfortunate, me, that there is more to these words than meets the eye.

This poem is a metaphor for taking risks.

I am taking risks by sharing my work.

I risk being told that my work is shit.

I risk being told that I have misinterpreted yet another prompt.

I risk feeling stupid and worthless.

And yet, I have something to say. So today, I feel up to risking these things. Another day, perhaps not so much.

It is possible that Ornery Owl is only able to accomplish realism through photography.

I present one of my realistic (and horrible) photographs for your viewing displeasure.

30 Days of Haiga 2021: The Dilemma

Prompt Used

Notes
One of the ugliest, most hateful things that people can say about those who commit suicide is that they are "selfish" and "weren't thinking of the people they'd leave behind to clean up their mess." This awful "truism" simply isn't true. Those who commit suicide have reached a point of despair that they can't see a way around.

Those who have never reached this point have no business talking about what those who have reached it are feeling or who they are thinking of. I don't have any on-location friends and I doubt my absence would create any serious unhappiness for my online friends.

If I'm truthful, my online acquaintances would probably appreciate it if I fucked off. I generally feel that people are putting up with me rather than that they like me.

I often feel that my family would be better off without me. However, I still serve some useful functions, such as half-assed chef, dishwasher, and Uber for the household. When I'm no longer fit for purpose, it's probably just as well that I punch my ticket and save everyone a lot of hassle.

I've always been psychologically fragile and now I'm not worth a gnat's fart in a category 5 hurricane physically. I am in constant low-grade to moderate pain. I was in constant severe pain for about two months and if I wore hats, my hat would be off to those who live with severe chronic pain. If I had to do it much longer, I probably would have sold myself the farm and plowed myself under.

Those who don't live with chronic pain don't understand that even low-grade chronic pain is exhausting. I've gotten rid of all the people who complained that I never had any energy. They are now decomposing in my locker.

Seriously, I just don't interact with these people anymore. People take things too literally these days, so I feel I need to clearly state that I have never killed anybody. Over the course of 56 years, I've imagined sending many people in a rocket ship to the sun, but I would be a failure as a murderer. I'm a poor liar with a severe guilty conscience. I would be caught immediately.

I watched a re-enactment of The Picture of Dorian Gray on Amazon last night. Sometimes I think that a Portrait of Pain-Free Cie would be nice. However, I wouldn't want it to be a portrait of young me. Forget the "beautiful" part, because I have never been beautiful.

I would want my portrait to be of Middle-Aged Curmudgeon me. My portrait's resting bitch face would never rest. It would do me proud.

30 Days of Haiga 2021: Face Your Fear

I am not going to officially participate in the Weekly Scribblings anymore. I have gotten myself in the shit with that prompt more than once because of my distractibility, inability to follow instructions properly, and just plain mutton-headedness.

At closing in on 60 years old, it's clear that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but these days I can exercise the option to bugger off rather than sit in the corner with a dunce hat on while the teacher scolds me and the other students bask in the schadenfreude.

It's better for me to bring my goods to the Writers Pantry, where anything goes as long as it's under 369 words. I can run with scissors, not play well with others, and misinterpret rules to my shriveled little brain's content.

30 Days of Haiga 2021: If We Value Life #8Sunday #SnipSun #CharitySunday

Background Image: the Six of Pentacles card from the Rider-Waite Tarot
Text Art and Effects by Ornery Owl (Cara Hartley)

The text on the image reads:
fair treatment for all
a value that all must share
if we value life

This Haiga will be part of a collection to be published in the forthcoming months.

I am still working on formatting my forthcoming poetry collection "December Mood." I have decided that this collection will be released in December. An innovative idea, I know.

Today is Charity Sunday. It might seem a strange thing for a devout Agnostic and far-fallen Catholic like me to donate to a church, but the Friendship Alliance Church in Grover, Colorado walks the talk.

My son and I live in Grover. It is one of the poorest communities in Colorado. We go to the food bank at Friendship Alliance Church once a month. We get most of our food there. We still need to purchase meat, cheese, and bread, but the food bank supplies a lot of essentials such as canned fruits and vegetables and cereal.

I will donate a dollar for every comment received to Friendship Alliance Church. You can visit their website here to learn more about them.

In other issues of concern, I have figured a way around the problem of books added to the Roost Recommendations (http://bit.ly/ReadersRoost) later in the month getting the short end of the stick.

From this day forward, books discovered between the 1st and the 15th will be added to the current month's Roost Recommendations, and books discovered after the 15th will be added to the forthcoming month's Recommendations. I believe that this will facilitate equal exposure for all featured books.

Apologies for this cobbled mess of a post. I had a wonderful post all ready to go save for a few minor details, but disaster struck. This damn Google Desktop update has been hijacking the processor on my 6-year-old computer for the better part of two days.

Thus, things move slowly, and when I made the critical error of hitting CTRL-Z without insuring that only the newly pasted erroneous text was highlighted, the entire post was deleted and I wasn't able to move fast enough to stop Blogger from saving the now-blank post. So, now you get this reconstructed fuckery.

Number 12 Looks Just Like You is the seventeenth episode from the fifth season of The Twilight Zone. The story is set in a dystopian future in which everyone, upon reaching adulthood, has their body surgically altered into one of a set of physically attractive models.

Word Prompt: Method

Notes if you Need 'Em
Though you don't have to read 'em
Just read the poem if you'd rather

I was inspired by the second and third poems offered for inspiration by Poets and Storytellers for the Weekly Scribblings, though my interpretation might be a bit obscure.

My heart is indeed jaded, and reason would be welcome, but there is neither reason nor compassion when dealing with government agencies. I see them for what they are: sadistic and soulless collectives that delight in keeping people who are struggling downtrodden.

I worked as long as I possibly could to avoid having to deal with these Nazgul. Then the day came when the final body part gave way and I couldn't work anymore. I still don't have full range of motion in my left arm and I have to use an upright walker to go more than very short distances.

The knotted, grinding feeling in my stomach and the grinding of my teeth are courtesy of SSDI, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Inhumane Services department here in Shitkicker County. My jaw hasn't ached this much in months.

I started receiving disability payments back in February. Can't live without 'em, but I'd rather not have to live with 'em.

I was doing fine with SSD plus Medicaid. Then, here comes Medicare. The benefits from Medicare are quite good, but they cost me $140 a month...

Which comes out of my disability check...

The check which just covers bills with a little left over for food and fuel.

The bulk of our household's food comes from the food bank, but it's still necessary to buy some meat and cheese.

Anyway, I was told to contact Medicaid and have them pay my Medicare premiums.

Which they won't.

Why?

Because my disability check grants me a generous sum of $1390 per month.

The cutoff for Medicaid to pay my Medicare premiums is $1308 a month.

You can read the following links to see how disability screws people.

A person on disability is not allowed more than $2000 in savings.

A person on disability is only allowed one vehicle. So, if you think it would be good to have an auxiliary vehicle in case your main vehicle is in the shop? Ha! You fool, you!

What little money I make comes from doing book reviews. In a good month, I may make $150. Most of the time it's less.

My son and I are being allowed to live in the house where we reside rent-free, courtesy of my ex-husband who owns the house. He used to help us monetarily, but his reserves are tapped.

I try to have a semi-positive attitude, but lately I want to scream, cry, and throw bricks at Congress and any smug one percenter who spouts off about the trickle-down theory. Also at the space cadets Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. I'm trying to keep it PG-13 here, but as my late father would have said, these people can go pound sand.

So, there's my story, it's sad but true.

I surely hope it don't happen to you.
