Charity Sunday: Adams County Animal Shelter

For this Charity Sunday, I am going to send items to the Adams County Animal Shelter for their Smitten for Kittens drive.

The shelter is not currently set up to take monetary donations, so I will purchase items through Amazon. Thus, if I receive 5 comments I will send at least $5 worth of items. I hope that makes sense.

Here is the shelter's Amazon wish list.

This donation is being made in honor of Lafayette, one of the best friends I've ever had in this crappy and stupid world.

The above image is the property of Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl/Naughty Netherworld Press/Poetry of the Netherworld. You are welcome to use the image respectfully as long as you credit one of the above.

I shouldn't have to say this, but because the world is filled with shitty assholes, I am going to tell you all that I have no patience for the kind of person who, upon seeing this photo, says something nasty about my body or sanctimoniously declares that they don't like tattoos. I really don't give a fuck what you think about my body or whether you like tattoos. If you can't say something nice, fuck off elsewhere. Like into the sun, for example. The need to be hateful or behave in a holier-than-thou fashion says worse things about you than it does about me.

I adopted Lafayette and Tara from the Adams County Animal Shelter in March 2010. They had both been in their kennels at the shelter for most of their lives. Tara was six months old. Lafayette was 8 months old and absolutely wild. He kept tapping at me. He was completely agoraphobic when I first brought him home and hid under the printer table until nighttime. When I went to sleep, he came out and shredded my arm. It wasn't out of malice. He wanted to play. I had the vet trim his claws, and he learned how to play with soft paws quickly.

Those of you who have been with me a while may recall Tara from her post-surgery pictures when she had a benign tumor removed from her forehead. She looked like a juvenile Skeksis.

Tara is doing well overall. Following the chemotherapy treatments, the fur that was shaved off to do ultrasounds of her abdomen grew back a lighter color.

Tara and Lafayette were either half-siblings or cousins. They were from the same feral colony. They shared the condition of feline stomatitis, which required the removal of most of their teeth. Both of them were quite inbred and had multiple health problems. Lafayette had multiple system failure and had to be put to sleep on his sixth birthday, 17 July 2015. My heart broke into a million pieces on that day and has never mended.

I originally posted the following poem on this blog on 12 November 2020. It honors Lafayette and Trinity, who didn't get along very well. They were jealous of each other. However, they both got along with the brothers Leon and Raymond (both gone now as well) who served as a buffer between them.

Trinity died on 4 November 2016 from brain and lung cancer. As that was the same day that Donald tRump was elected, it is quite simply one of the shittiest days in history.

The poem also appears in my third poetry volume, December Mood. If you are smart enough to subscribe to my epic newsletter today, you will eventually receive a link to a free ARC of this epic collection. (Honestly, I'm still working on getting the new and better Naughty Netherworld News set up.)

If there is some crazy reason that you don't want to receive a thrilling gift in your inbox every month, you can purchase the poetry volume from Amazon or borrow it via Kindle Unlimited.

Every day I think of you

I remember what good friends you were to me

If you were the color of your spirit set free

I’m wondering what you would be

Lafayette, would this be you?

Did you become something like this when you rose away?

I thought that there would be more time to say

How much I love you every day

 Trinity, my colorful girl

With your beautiful, expressive eyes

Would I recognize your new disguise?

If only I could be that wise

I walk through the darkness of my dreams

With eyes closed fast, not wanting to see

The hopelessness surrounding me

Knowing what I wish can never be

The Mudlark

A beautiful black and white bird

Of which I had not previously heard

Something like a magpie

To the untrained eye

Some might find it a bit absurd

The mudlark looks like a magpie but is a member of the Monarchidae family while the magpie is a member of the Corvidae family.

Kind thanks to Sammi Cox for giving me a prompt with the perfect word count to be able to stick a fork in this year's NaNoHellMo project. That sucker is officially done! I will still complete the last two days of diary and poems, but there is no longer any pressure to make a specific word count. Halleluiah!

Seagull Limerick

Free use image by Lars Nissen on Pixabay

the seagull is a baffling bird
that should not be taken at its word
it does not need to be
anywhere near the sea
even inland its squawks can be heard

~cie~

Today's prompt was to write a sea creature poem, so I got cheeky with it.

Carpe Diem Renga with Issa: Sparrows

spring peace--
after rain, a gang war
garden sparrows
the seeds that I have planted
are a victory buffet

don't let the plum blossom guard
cut your tongues...
Sparrows!
let voices be a whisper
until you are safely past

are the sparrows too
having a private party?
plum blossoms
no, I was not invited
I now watch from the window

while I watch
he's off to make a living alone...
baby sparrow
sometimes the ones who leave home
invite the parents to stay

living in harmony--
the sparrow has
both parents!
will the parents be able
to live in harmony too?

on the tip of the
newly sprouted bamboo...
a baby sparrow
a small and innocent thing
in a world without a heart

~Issa and Cie~

Notes:
The Hokku stanzas in these Tan Renga verses were composed by Kobayashi Issa (June 15, 1763 – January 5, 1828). The Akegu stanzas were written by me.
The Akegu in the last three verses are references to my son, without whose kindness I would be homeless. The property he bought will eventually also become home to his father who is currently living in Arizona helping his own father. When his father passes, he will sell the place in Arizona and move here.
We were divorced in 1994 when our son was four years old, and we have lived in roommate situations since then, although I was always relieved when he moved on to something else if I am honest. That probably won't happen this time, due to compromises in his health as well as mine. However, this is a big enough place that we should be able to keep from killing each other.

Carpe Diem #1756: Fly

Horsefly, aka Biting Buttmunch

get lost buzzing pest
whether biting or buzzing
you are annoying

~Cie~

Notes:
It seems that Grover and Cactus Clem forgot to tell me about the metric crap-ton of flies that reside on the Lone Prairie. Would you fellows care to explain yourselves?

Ghost Town Grover sez: "I'm awful sorry about lyin' by omission about all the flies 'round these parts, Ornery, but Cactus Clem said that if you knew about 'em you might not wanna move here. So I done kept my mouth shut and didn't say nothing about the flies. By the way, how the heck much is a metric crap-ton? Is that like a wheelbarrow-full? 'Cause I probably hauled lots of metric crap-tons of dirt outta the mine back when I was prospectin' fer gold."

Cactus Clem sez: "Grover, do you think I oughta lie by omission about the thing that Beavis and Butthead done in the living room to try and git rid of them flies?"

Troiku Challenge 2019: Day 10: Moonlit Night

First Steam Train

the wild geese take flight
low along the railroad tracks
in the moonlit night

the wild geese take flight
under the serene moonlight
fly above it all

low along the railroad tracks
dipping down close to the ground
sense of adventure

in the moonlit night
they worry about nothing
flying in their peace

~Shiki & Cie~

Note:
The "sleigh" of this Troiku was created by Masaoka Shiki (1867 - 1902). The three "horses" were imagined by me.

NaPoWriMo 2019 Day 13 + Poems in April 2019 Day 13 & 6: Night of the Lepus

Stargazing Rabbit

So, you think a rabbit can't be scary?
Well, Smartypants
Why don't you just try
To go outside
On the Night of the Lepus?
This ain't no Tale of Peter Rabbit, dagnabbit!
I assure you that The Bunnies Are Not In Their Beds
This is The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit
Rabbits and Raindrops?
Try Bunnies and Bloodshed!
Shiver and tremble
Beware and dread
The Night of the Lepus
Is upon us!

~Cie~

Dedicated to DeForest Kelley
A lovely man who appeared in many great productions
And one wonderfully awful one

The book titles I used in the poem are listed below.
Full disclosure: The links allow the purchase of the books on Amazon, for which I get a small commission.

Notes:
I have only attended one fan convention. I went to Star Con back in 1984. I treasure the fact that I was able to hear DeForest Kelley speak. He was a very nice man with a somewhat wicked sense of humor and an unexpected tendency to use salty language. He didn't just talk about Star Trek, he also talked about the Westerns he starred in and laughed about having to reduce the salt in his language when working with Loretta Young, who was a very straight-laced lady.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get his autograph. The poor fellow was suffering from altitude sickness and had to go back to his hotel room. The nasty woman in front of me snidely said that he probably had too much to drink. I had nothing to say to her and thought that if I had to deal with people like her very often, I'd probably be inclined to drink too.
In any case, I'm glad I got to spend time listening to the musings of a person whom I like very well, and I'm glad I got to see the terrible B movie that he was in. I'm pretty sure that it wasn't one of his prouder moments. The Night of the Lepus is not a great classic, but it is one of those movies that's so bad it's good.

Just in case you can't resist having a copy for yourself.

NaHaiWriMo 2018 #5 and Shadow Shot Sunday: Toothy Skull

Notes:
Words and images copyright Cara Hartley/The Real Cie. You are welcome to use my photos, including altering them for use as backgrounds in your own creations or for story prompts, as long as proper credit is given to me.
Not forcing myself to adhere to a strict schedule with my Haigas this year has made creating them much more relaxing and enjoyable. I plan to make 30 of them, as I have done in years past. At that point, an e-book may be forthcoming. We shall see!

Big Bang Bird

Notes first today. The prompt asks us to take a photograph and a poem in a language we don't know, then "translate" the poem as if it goes with the photograph. The language here is Belgian, and I don't know it.
I will provide the translation after I have ruined...er...improved this poem!

A BIG BANG

When night meets day, standing off to the side of the window
An awful grackle serves up a strident tittering as light comes
In his mind, he thinks the light is cue for his wrathful, ringing singing

When night meets day, standing on the side of the lawn like a fossil
A banal nightmare reckoning opens its obnoxious mouth
No telling, no saying from start to finish its song

The last stand is coming when this rude bird will meet its fate
The door groans open, and out the entry comes
Into the world, a wolf, groaning and hung over on Jager

The vain bird dances a binary chachacha and takes a dump
He brags while night meets day, stands to the side and defecates
He stares like an interstellar badass

This feathered parasite has the advantage over the glazed synapses of his foe
Whose neurons are unlit
Sending only a banal signal

And now, the original poem and a translation

A BIG BANG

A BIG BANG
nothing further is needed than distance to see us the way we are
the increase and decease of temporary structures, light
in darkness in the light we grow in all directions, rampant

nothing further is needed than distance to see us: living fossils
perpetually in identical orbit describing ones and zeros, as we
don’t count, not quick enough to distinguish between the start and finish

let alone to come home. Little Red Riding Hood in seven-league boots
dashes through the undersea optic fibre into an ear the other
side of the world. A wolf, a grandma, little girl and huntsman

dancing a binary cha-cha-cha together. Get off the path my love
all that is needed is distance to see us: a defective cell
in a cranial firmament, an interstellar message of

parasitic, luminous moss, glass fibre synapses but quicker still
neuron on / neuron off, human on / human off
people as a banal signal.
