The Haiga was inspired by a prompt from Carpe Diem Haiku.

Text art was added to the base image using Pixlr. You are welcome to share the Haiga, but please credit Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl if you do. A link back to this blog is also appreciated.

I tend to feel guilty when my Haiga efforts come together quickly, but sometimes simple is best.

Poetry Prompts and Inspiration Day 29 April PAD Challenge and NaPoWriMo

Serendipity! Owls and meat, all in one picture!

Today's April PAD Challenge prompt asks participants to write a sight poem.

Today's NaPoWriMo prompt asks participants to start by reading Alberto Rios’s poem “Perfect for Any Occasion.”

Next, write your own two-part poem that focuses on food. At some point in the poem, describe the food as if it were a person. Give the food/meal at least one line of spoken dialogue.

My poem focused on the age-old "I tried to change my carnivorous ways" conundrum. The food does "speak," but I didn't describe it as if it were a person. I was going for carnivorous, not cannibalistic.

I'm keeping it brief today as I need to hop on the Editing Express Elevator to Hell.

Going down!

30 Days of Haiga 2022: Pumpkin Pie Season

text

nutmeg and cloves

cinnamon and ginger spice

sugar and pumpkin

flour, milk, eggs, a little salt

pumpkin pie season is here

notes

Yes, I really turned a pumpkin pie recipe into a Haiga. The following prompt from D'Verse poets inspired me to do the dirty deed.

https://dversepoets.com/2022/09/20/poetics-spicing-it-up/

I created the Haiga using Pixlr.com and a free use image from Open Clipart Vectors.

Here is a link to the pumpkin pie recipe.

You are welcome to use the Haiga, but please credit Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl and provide a link back to this blog.

You are welcome to make the pumpkin pie. If you do, please credit the recipe author.

No, I did not backdate this post!

This year's Haiga challenge is nearing its end. Up next is OctPoWriMo, followed by the November PAD Challenge plus NaNoHellMo. I am once again editing multiple works. There is no rest for the wicked.

April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 20

This is one of the rare occasions when the creator of the Deep House Mix videos didn't opt for the Babes in Bikinis aesthetic right out of the starting gate. I can't vouch for the rest of the video as I've only listened rather than watched, but at least the initial image doesn't make me roll my eyes.

Feel free to read the essay that I wrote for the WEP Challenge yesterday if you desire. You have until the 22nd to share a piece of your own for the challenge.

And now on to today's prompts.

The Macaroni and Cheese Conundrum

Prompts Used

Write a poem that anthropomorphizes a food
I wrote a poem comparing mac and cheese variably to a stoner on a couch, movie theatre nachos, a lab experiment, and a dish at a pretentious artisan bistro.

Write a poem using the six provided words.

Well, I am hungry now, so I'm going to wrap this up. Happy writing!

November PAD Challenge 2021: The Great Culinary Battle of a Half-Assed Cook

Image by JL G from Pixabay

she took Billy Lynn's long walk to her kitchen
she resolved to prepare cuisine worthy of excitement
she committed herself to following the motivating recipe as closely as possible

her home smelled of rosy red petunias and pretty pickled peanuts
her appetite was insatiable
she took Billy Lynn's long walk to her kitchen

the dessert she made began with bent bristles and blended bananas
she ignored the knitting neighbors and nagging noises
she resolved to prepare cuisine worthy of excitement

sometimes during past cooking adventures, she had improvised too much
now she realized the mistake she had made
she committed herself to following the motivating recipe as closely as possible

This poem was inspired by a minor culinary disaster. Last night I made tapioca pudding in the slow cooker. My son took some upstairs to his room and came down a few minutes later to tell me the pudding had no flavor. Upon tasting it, I realized that I had forgotten to add sugar. I saved it for tonight and will blend it with some boxed vanilla pudding.

Here is the recipe I used, in case you are interested. Don't forget the sugar!

4 cups milk

⅔ cup white sugar

½ cup small pearl tapioca

2 eggs, lightly beaten

Stir together the milk, sugar, tapioca, and eggs in a slow cooker. Cover, and cook on medium for 3 hours, or on Low for 6 hours, stirring occasionally. Serve warm.

I also added 1/4 cup of butter for flavor, but that is optional. I had a bit of leftover rice from dinner which I threw in as well.

I didn't have any small pearl tapioca, so I used the large pearl variety. Small pearl tapioca does not have to be soaked. Large pearl does. Oddly enough, tapioca is hard to come by in my area. I haven't had much luck finding it online either.

Here is the recipe source.
