April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 27

Image by Wolfgang Eckert from Pixabay

I'm a mess this morning, People. I woke up to a nasty charley horse in my right calf. It's that time of year when I don't need the furnace on during the day but I do at night because the temperatures drop and when the house is cold, I suffer from muscle cramps.

I lived in a dilapidated mobile home with no heat for many years. It was miserably hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. I lived paycheck to paycheck and couldn't afford to get the furnace fixed. There is a pervasive attitude that some people "deserve" to live in such conditions--or worse--and the fact that people can think that way stymies me.

Robert Lee Brewer, architect of the April and November PAD challenges at Writers
Digest, has issued the poetry remix challenge, but I'm going to table that until April 30 and make the remix the last poem in my chapbook manuscript.

There are three days left before we stick a fork in this sucker. Let's get going.

Not the Syrupy Kind

Prompts used

Write a duplex poem.

A duplex poem consists of seven, two-line stanzas. The second line of the first stanza is echoed by (but not identical to) the first line of the second stanza, the second line of the second stanza is echoed by (but not identical to) the first line of the third stanza, and so on. The last line of the poem is the same as the first.

write a love or anti-love poem

I wrote about the kind of love that can save the world. Forget that moon-June-tune nonsense. The world needs altruistic love, charitable love. The world needs tolerance. I often think that tolerance is a more vital quality than absolute acceptance. No human will find every person's way of life acceptable, but we need to tolerate even those whose ideas we disagree with.

Hence, I may find tRump supporters odious, but it is unacceptable for me to burn down their house or even vandalize their oversize truck covered in tRump 2024 stickers and flying two big tRump flags in the back. In order to maintain peace in my community, I need to coexist with these people even if I loathe their ideology.

Things are too violent these days
We need to remember that peace is the way.

April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 6

Greetings Poetic types and welcome to the sixth day of the April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo for 2022. I've provided today's poetry soundtrack, including a link in case you can't see the embedded player.

I had a bout of stronger than usual depression yesterday. Today's poem, Pain in the Soul, discusses my tendency towards spring depression, something that very few people seem to understand even though statistically April is the cruelest month. More people commit suicide in April than during the winter holidays. Two days from now will be the thirty-first anniversary of the suicide of a very troubled and quite unforgettable person.

Pain in the Soul

Prompts Used
Write a blank in the blank poem

Write a variation of an acrostic poem. Rather than spelling out a word with the first letters of each line, write a poem that reproduces a phrase with the first words of each line.

I used my own Haiku, Spring Awakens, as the basis for the acrostic.

The results of the November PAD Chapbook Challenge are in. I didn't win and didn't expect to. I don't think my poetry is quite the host's cup of tea, but I'll keep creating chapbooks anyway, which I will later self-publish because I'm an asshole like that.

Days like this I wish I had someone I could pour out the grim and frostbitten contents of my cold black heart to, but I don't and I won't so there's fuck-all use of getting my hopes up for something that isn't going to happen. I know better these days.

Helloween 2021 Day 28: I Cancelled...

I have canceled
the fear of what you think
of what I may think
or what I may be
what you make of me
whether I am unsophisticated
because I have never been to Paris

I have canceled
the fear of your judgment
of what I believe
or cannot believe
I believe in ghosts
or at least the possibility of
your opinions will no longer scare us

~ornery owl~

prompts
"I canceled..."

Write a duodora about a human attribute that irritates you and put a Halloween spin on it. Snobbishness and closed-mindedness are two attributes that grind my gears. Ghosts are associated with Halloween.

General theme of Samhain and those who have departed the material world.

http://www.octpowrimo.com/2021/10/octpowrimo-day-29-paris.html

"What is Paris to you?"

In this case, it's a concept used to convey an idea or emotion.

"Do I believe in ghosts?"

I believe in the possibility of ghosts, and I've seen some shit.

I don't care if you believe in ghosts or not. I don't have any intention of arguing with anyone about it. I'm just tired of people with "my way or the highway" attitudes and closed minds.

LIfestyles of Tone Deaf Rich Twits

I can't stop wondering why vapid folk

always seem to be the ones with money

and why people that they wouldn't spit on

ooh and ahh about their selfish choices

why do awful people get to journey

down whatever path they choose on a whim

leaving a trail of abandoned notions

for the peons to clean up after them

why are people all too fascinated

with a Kardashian or anyone

who makes the most self-absorbed decision

everything is always about themselves

who knew milk on cereal could be good?

wait till you try butter on your toast, twerp

Fingers Crossed

Free use image by Vanessa Zoyd on Pixabay

I will be extremely thankful
if we the people can fulfill
removing from Capitol Hill
the Beast who causes such rankle

my only hope for Thanksgiving this year
of which I dream in anticipation
is to be able to raise my glass in a toast
and say I am thankful to the Powers that May Be
that the Beast has been ousted
and perhaps the nation can heal

the Beast's presence caused hearts to chill
running on less than a tankful
as he brags about his bank-full
the poor swallow a bitter pill

I am done with the Beast, to say the least
I hope the majority agrees with me
It is time for Nero to stop fiddling
with our minds while the country burns literally
take the lying liar
out to a pasture filled with tumbleweeds

dejar que el mentiroso mentiroso estofado en sus propios jugos
mientras que la gente trabaja para reconstruir

~cie~

The last stanza means "let the lying liar stew in his own juices while the people try to rebuild."

No Forgiveness

Free use image copyright J.C. Cards on Pixabay

everybody talks about forgiveness being the right way
letting go of your anger and having all good things to say
forgiveness is the only path to your certain victory
letting your anger go up in smoke is how to be set free
but i'm done forgiving the bastards who loved to make me weep
because they robbed me of peace whether I'm awake or asleep
and i'll be god damned if i'm going to turn the other cheek
their sick, twisted game is one that I'm no longer gonna play
all i ever really wished was for them to let me be
don't owe it to no one to forgive those who abuse and creep

Soaring on flights of fancy
They called her Butterfly
Her dreams have since flown away

The American 767 is:
a tristich, a poem in 3 lines. (Cool thing to know!)
syllabic, 7-6-7 syllables per line.
unrhymed.

NaPoWriMo 2015: Day 27: I, Fae

I, Fae

Although
You tried
To destroy me

I
Still remain
I have survived

~Fae~

Notes:
This is an account that I (Faycin A Croud) created for my wounded inner child years ago. I haven't used it in almost as many years. I have a tendency to try and silence this voice. I think it will help me heal to let her speak.
I thank Cie and the others for letting her become part of the team! It takes very special people to realize that those of us who are wounded aren't lesser, and our various selves do have worth and purpose.

Prompt:
And today’s prompt – optional, as always — comes to us from Vince Gotera. It’s the hay(na)ku). Created by the poet Eileen Tabios and named by Vince, the hay(na)ku is a variant on the haiku. A hay(na)ku consists of a three-line stanza, where the first line has one word, the second line has two words, and the third line has three words. You can write just one, or chain several together into a longer poem. For example, you could write a hay(na)ku sonnet, like the one that Vince himself wrote back during NaPoWriMo 2012!

OctPoWriMo 2014: Day 20

Down the Rabbit Hole
by John Tenniel
Public Domain

Too Late

Too little too late
Too much too soon
Soon it will all be over
Over the next rise
Rise with the sun
Sun shines bright
Bright lights, big city
City girls just seem to find out early
Early bird catches the worm
Worm your way into my heart
Heart of glass
Glass house
House of cards
Cards in hand
Hand in glove
Glove fits snug
Snug as a bug in a rug
Rug hides dust
Dust of time
Time to hurry
Hurry up and wait
Wait for me
Me and you
You forgot
Forgot to remember
Remember my face
Face the facts
Facts of life
Life and death
Death comes knocking
Knocking down doors
Doors of perception
Perception of reality
Reality bites
Bites like a dog
Dog of war
War is not the answer
Answer the call
Call for help
Help the hopeless
Hopeless romance
Romance the stone
Stone the sinner
Sinner and saint
Saint I ain't
Ain't you
You can't touch this
This is the end
This
End

OctPoWriMo 2014: Day 3

Bittersweet

Sweets for the not so sweet
Need a treat
Been far too long since I indulged
I don't mean sweets to eat
Or fine meat
Some secrets are best not divulged

Not talking 'bout candy
I buy that
I know you're thinking I mean sex
Some may think that's dandy
It's old hat
When done it only serves to vex

It's not a sugar'd treat
It's not wine
Nor to indulge the fleshly need
It's nothing one can eat
It feels fine
I need my spirit to be freed

~Helena~

Helena's Note:
It's a difficult thing to feel free to truly express oneself, even among those calling themselves "creative spirits." When I first started blogging, I was ever so sure that I would find a vast community of free thinkers, especially among the bleeding hearts and artists. Overall, I've found quite the opposite to be true. Artistic types and so-called liberal thinkers are just as likely to pick apart and criticize those who don't fit the mold as the "normal" person.
Often my only port in the storm of navigating life while mentally ill has been the venues for expression provided by Team Netherworld. I would just like to take this moment to thank our founder, Cie Cheesemeister, for opening this space to freaks like me.

This Poem Is a Gem, A Rock, and a Stone

This poem is a gem
This poem is a rock
This poem is a stone

This poem is a gem
Sparkling like eternity
Beautiful beyond measure
A precious gift given to signify love and respect
A dangerous siren, calling some to disregard the law

This poem is a rock
Strong and enduring
As old as the earth itself
Solid as eternity
Yet changing with the wind and tide

This poem is a stone
Standing against the elements
Perhaps part of a stalwart mountain
Perhaps carved into enduring works of art
Perhaps useful in industry

This poem is a gem, sparkling like eternity
This poem is a rock, strong and enduring
This poem is a stone, standing against the elements

~Quilla~

Boomerang Metaphors (invented by Hannah Gosselin)

* Create three, “This poem is a ____,” statements.

* Support each statement in separate stanzas, (one can choose the length of the supporting stanzas and whether or not to rhyme or employ free verse).

* Restate the statement that’s being supported in the last line of these supporting stanzas, (as mini boomerang metaphor refrains).

* Then name the list of three, “This poem is a _____,” statements again as a boomerang metaphors closing refrain.

Note: One may choose to state the closing refrain slightly morphed but mostly the same. As it seems, words that go out into the world do tend to come back touched – slightly transformed.

* The title encapsulates the three listed elements, “This Poem is a ____, ____ and a _____”

A suggestion: One may choose to free write as a precursor to writing this form. I find that it’s really freeing to list a bunch of, “This poem is a ___,” statements before beginning. You may end up with some that relate that you can trio together or some that juxtapose to contrast brilliantly.

W is for Wrapped Refrain (Form 2)

The music I was listening to when I wrote the poem

The Eternal Dance

I
Would you dance with me always, I wonder, and be my love
You are more beautiful than all the angels up above
I fell the moment I saw you
I died the moment I saw through
The mask you wear to hide the lies
The truth is plain behind your eyes
I love you even though you have torn my heart asunder
I ask you now: would you dance with me always, I wonder

II
Your heart beats to a melody untrue and makes me weep
Innocent eyes disguise all the wicked secrets you keep
You hold me in your arms while you
Consider plans to be untrue
You scheme about your next conquest
While telling me that I'm the best
I can't believe I fell for someone as wicked as you
You lie to me, your heart beats to a melody untrue

~Tempest Nightingale LeTrope~

Wrapped Refrain (Form No. 2), created by Jan Turner, carries some similar aspects as her Wrapped Refrain form, with further advanced techniques. It consists of 2 or more stanzas of 8 lines each, with the following set rules:

Meter: 14, 14, 8, 8, 8, 8, 14, 14
Rhyme Scheme: a,a,b,b,c,c,d,d

Refrain rule: In each stanza, the first 10 syllables in the first line (incorporating a phrase) must be the last 10 syllables at the end of the last line (line #8).

Example #1:
Castle in the Clouds

Bavaria, you render dreams come true on hills of white.
Your castle glints through moonbeams, snowy spires in the night.
My mind says it’s just a mirage
or nature playing with collage...
that if I turn around I bet
it shall just disappear, and yet
my eyes instead see parapets that break the skyline blue,
as straight ahead, Bavaria, you render dreams come true.

Bavaria, your Disneyland is mine this very night;
it’s just as if your castle planned its setting, out of sight,
for some of us to stumble on.
But, if I blink will it be gone?
This castle you have hid so well
enchants me with its magic spell;
it lures me into fantasies enwrapped with snowy pine.
You render dreams, Bavaria... your Disneyland is mine.

T is for Tableau

Cut me a slice!

Modern Life Tableau

Always on the run
Sun hurries across
A horizon that
Looks eerily the
Same every day as
We race to our deaths

~Rose~

The Tableau, a poetry form created by Emily Romano in October of 2008, consists of one or more verses, each having six lines. Each line should have five beats. There is no set rhyme scheme, although rhyme may be present. The title should contain the word tableau.

Since the dictionary states the word tableau means picture or representation, the poem should reflect this. A picture should come to mind as the poem is read.

Example #1:
Graveside Tableau

Sunlight cannot warm
The corpse of the bairn
Who drowned in the loch;
Stoic the father,
Silent the mother,
While a spinster weeps

P is for Paradelle

Since this strikes me as being something that will likely make me lose what little remains of my sanity, I thought that I would make it about my favorite subject: Lovecraftian mythos!

The King in Yellow

In Lake Hali does Hastur dwell
In Lake Hali does Hastur dwell
Near to Lost Carcosa, city of the damned
Near to Lost Carcosa, city of the damned
Near to the damned city of Lost Carcosa
In the lake of Hali does Hastur dwell

The terrible king in yellow tatters is his avatar
The terrible king in yellow tatters is his avatar
The Yellow Sign foretells his coming
The Yellow Sign foretells his coming
The Yellow Sign foretells his coming avatar
Is the terrible King in Yellow Tatters

What madness possessed me to open up the book?
What madness possessed me to open up the book?
Why did I cling to the onyx clasp?
Why did I cling to the onyx clasp?
Why, the onyx clasp possessed me
What madness did cling to open up the book

Why, what madness the Yellow Sign foretells
His avatar possessed me to
I did cling to the onyx clasp, open up the book
The terrible King in Yellow Tatters is coming
Near to his city of the damned, Lost Carcosa
In Lake Hali does Hastur dwell

~H.P. Liebekraft~

My Ride

Read The King in Yellow by Robert Chambers

The Paradelle is a modern poetic form invented by Billy Collins as a parody of the villanelle. Billy Collins claimed that the paradelle was a difficult, fixed form consisting of four six-line stanzas with a repetitive pattern invented in eleventh century France, and the press believed the story and ran with it. Due to the extensive publicity, the Paradelle has made its rounds in the poetic community. Eventhough the form was invented as a hoax, the Paradelle has taken on a life of its own. It is still a difficult form, nonetheless, to practice which can be fun and rewarding even though the inventor may not have intended it to be.

The Paradell Structure

First Three Stanzas:

The first two lines as well as the third and fourth lines of the first three stanzas must be the same (repeat). Where it begins to get difficult and become more of a poetic puzzle is when reaching fifth and sixth lines. These lines must contain all the words from the preceding four lines within the stanza using them only once to form completely new lines.

Last Stanza:

For the most difficult piece of this poetic puzzle, the final stanza of the paradelle does not repeat like the preceding stanzas, rather the final six lines must contain every word from the first three stanzas, and only those words, again using them only once to form completely new lines.

The Design is simple:

Stanza 1: 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4
Stanza 2: 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8
Stanza 3: 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12
Stanza 4: 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18

Example #1:
Beneath the Dripping Cypress Trees

'Tis the breeze beneath the cypress trees,
'Tis the breeze beneath the cypress trees,
Where shady branches bend and bow,
Where shady branches bend and bow.
Beneath the bend and branches breeze,
Where the cypress' bow 'tis shady trees.

Ink like stains of sap fold down,
Ink like stains of sap fold down,
Brown and dripping tears that keep,
Brown and dripping tears that keep.
Sap like ink and stains of brown,
Tears that fold keep dripping down.

Will such variegated colors blend,
Will such variegated colors blend,
Away within envelope of leaves,
Away within envelope of leaves.
Of such colors envelope within,
Variegated leaves away will blend.

Within the sap 'tis shady brown,
And keep the breeze of that fold down,
Variegated stains away will blend,
Where colors bow and branches bend.
Tears of ink envelope like leaves,
Beneath such dripping cypress trees.
