Lafayette Forever

You stole my heart the moment I first saw your picture
I fostered you virtually in hopes of finding you a good home
Soon I knew I wanted your home to be with me.
You are forever my friend
I will always love you
Never forget you.
The scar on my broken heart
Bears the shape of you
Always.

A few people have told me my tattoo is cool.
I'd rather not have a reason to have it.

notes

Here's today's prompt.

I wrote an ode to my little buddy Lafayette.

The first two photos are the property of Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl. I ask that you do not use the first photo. I am okay with you using the second photo as long as you do so in a respectful fashion. I really can't imagine what reason anyone would have for wanting to use it.

Any comments about how much you hate tattoos or think that women shouldn't have tattoos or about my body are immature, inappropriate, and will not be published. If you don't like tattoos, don't get one. If you don't like how my body looks, find something else to look at. Simple.

I was forty-nine years old when I got my first tattoo. I wasn't drunk or high and it wasn't an off-the-cuff decision. It was something I'd been considering for about a month. I have seven tattoos and all of them honor someone or something important to me. I would get more if I could afford to.

Lafayette was very special to me. He had multiple system failure, and I had to make the horrible decision to have him put to sleep on his sixth birthday. Any time I write about him, I cry. He was a funny little guy who made me laugh, like when he photobombed the shoot I was doing with the dolls sent to me by a friend from back in my early blogging days.

I still have Lafayette's little half-sister or cousin Tara. I adopted them together. They both came from the same feral colony. They were both very inbred and had health problems and subtle physical abnormalities. Lafayette was small for a male cat and had remarkably long toes.

Tara is unusually long. She has a condition called mast cell disease, which is more common in dogs than cats. She had to have a huge tumor removed from her brow near one eye. She looked like a juvenile Skeksis following the surgery. Fortunately, the tumor hasn't returned.

After the surgery

If you have multiple blogs, there will come a day when you create a post on the wrong blog. I figured it out when I was doing the tags and OctPoWriMo didn't come up. Fortunately, it was easy enough to move the post to the correct blog.

~Ornery Owl Has Spoken~

Instead of the usual Owl pic, I wanted to share this image of my two favorite Lafayettes, created for me by my friend Kamidiox. You can also find her on DeviantArt or check her out here.

Nelsan Ellis was a great guy gone too soon. He wasn't Lafayette Reynolds, but nobody else could have brought Lafayette to life the way Nelsan did. Much love and respect to this talented actor always.

Song In the Night

Image by Eva Schmidseder from Pixabay

Though your music will always be a part of me,

I will always be apart from you.

I know I could have loved you,

But you would have been a fool to let me.

I want to love but it turns out wrong,

Better to leave such desires in song.

I keep my feet planted firmly on the ground

In the ordinary world.

But sometimes I still dream

About me, who secretly wishes I knew you when I was young.

About you, gone from this world.

About something between you and me

That can never be

Except in dreams

Where souls brimful of love abide and meet.

In dreams, we are forever young

With thirsting, longing eyes.

I wanted you to be my rock and roll dream,

but I would have been your worst nightmare.

For when I close my eyes I see

Blood and roses

Far more often

Than I see paradise.

Snippet

A Sonnet for my Father

Easter was a holiday you treasured,

I think dinner was your favorite part.

There was magic that remains unmeasured,

Muted even before you did depart.

Sometimes things we tend to take for granted

Are what we miss when they have gone away.

Hopefulness by longing supplanted

Sorrow fills emptiness upon this day.

In all my time I never will forget

The lessons you tried to impart to me.

I try not to live life filled with regret.

Sometimes tears are the only thing I see.

Thirteen years have passed since you flew away.

My heart is full of things I did not say.

Notes

Look, y'all, I try not to do it, but this post is being linked in multiple blog hops. I just got through doing a major rewrite of a story to be included in the forthcoming Hot and Sticky anthology from Passionate Ink. Since my past submissions to anthologies have either been met with a "you're in" or a "no thanks," this experience was a little unsettling. I was told the story had good bones but lacked emotion. That's not what anyone wants to hear, is it?

I realized that my over-the-top reaction was connected more to experiences in my past than it was to my present circumstances. When I finished the rewrite, I felt like I had a better story. I don't really have time to create separate posts for multiple blog hops and this post works with three of them, so, here we are.

For every comment on this post, I will donate a dollar to the Lutheran medical center foundation in honor of my father. He died on November 28, 2010, in what was then Collier Hospice. It was still connected to the Lutheran medical center at the time. They just recently changed the name to Lutheran Hospice.

May 31 of this year would have been my father's 87th birthday.

First and Last Memories: WEP Challenge

I can't remember
the first time I saw your face
I was a squalling goblin

I remember well
the last time I saw your face
your earthly struggle finished

I recall winter
a time of painful beauty
you always loved the holidays

With love from your Ornery daughter

Image by Gustavo Belemmi from Pixabay

I'll always remember the Christmas when I was 10 years old as the best Christmas ever. Somehow, everything just came together as it should that year.

The father owl in the image has bright blue eyes. My father had blue eyes as well.

 notes
Major points only, I think. The work is kind of personal.

The poem is a Choka, a form of Japanese poetry used for storytelling. I chose a 5-7-7 pattern for the verses.

30 Days of Haiga 2022: For David

text

ending an era

the spark has gone from his eyes

to where does it fly?

notes

With the passing of my ex-father-in-law last night, my son now only has one grandparent: my mother.

My ex-father-in-law had developed dementia, something he always hoped wouldn't happen. My ex-husband and his live-in helper were discussing the possibility of putting "Scooby" in long-term care because his state of health had declined so sharply that they could no longer adequately provide for his needs by themselves.

My ex-father-in-law was a retired engineer and there was nothing he loved more than doing puzzles. Sorry, but those clickbait "articles" proclaiming that one can stave off dementia give false hope and make me angry. This man was probably smarter than all of us reading this post combined. He still wound up with dementia.

If you'd like to read more of my rant about awful clickbait proclaiming magical cures that don't exist plus ways to support real research that does exist, follow the link.

http://www.naughtynetherworldpress.com/2022/09/charity-sunday-fisher-center-for.html

I didn't have an especially close relationship with my ex-father-in-law but there was no bad blood between us. There is none between my ex-husband and me either. After our divorce in 1994, we repaired our friendship, which I think helped make my son's childhood a little more stable if sometimes chaotic because of bouncing from house to house during the week courtesy of my crazy work schedule.

So, yes, it's the end of an era. The death of my ex-father-in-law wasn't unexpected, and in many ways, it was a mercy. As Glen Campbell's widow said regarding dementia, it's better to die some other way. Still, one can't help but be a little sad. At least I can't.

I used the six-sentence story prompt to inspire this Haiga and wrote a three-sentence story followed by a lot of explanation.

https://girlieontheedge1.wordpress.com/2022/09/25/sundays-six-sentence-story-word-prompt-231/

Prompt word: Spark

I created the Haiga in Pixlr.com with a free-use image by LĂŞ Nam on Pixabay.

https://pixabay.com/photos/light-streaks-spark-smoke-trails-6899357/

I selected this image because of its simplicity and because the light creates what looks like a face on the left side of the picture.

The Reaper comes for us all at some point.
This Owl would be very honored to have such a fine memorial stone!
Hopefully, not for quite a while.
I still have poems to write, food experiments to make, and people to annoy!

Probably my favorite song ever about the Shadow who follows us through our entire lives, waiting for that certain moment that faces us all.

30 Days of Haiga 2022: Her Majesty

text

such a clever girl

she kept her heart to herself

as wise women do

21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022

notes

sketch of the Queen

I did not use any other prompts for this Haiga. I wanted to create a tribute to honor Queen Elizabeth II. I felt that the black and white illustration would work nicely with black text art, which I created using Pixlr.com. I also used decorative elements from Pixlr.

To stave off accusations that my Senryu is flip, snarky, or a backhanded compliment, I assure you that my intent is none of the above. Because of the brevity of this poem form, I needed to distill my thoughts down to the most basic elements. As noted in Wikipedia, "Her cousin Margaret Rhodes described her as "a jolly little girl, but fundamentally sensible and well-behaved"."

I've always admired the Queen's thoughtful and level-headed approach to even the most difficult circumstances. I could never conduct myself in such a measured fashion. My blood runs much too hot. Although my public face is generally stoic and I don't tend to reveal much about myself, my stoicism has a bitter edge to it and when I do show emotion, I wear it all over the front of myself.

Sometimes the Queen was accused of being emotionless or robotic. I never perceived her that way. In her position, it is imperative not to show weakness. She was always dignified, much more so than I ever could have been in her situation. I would not wish to be royalty.

Although I am not British, Her Majesty was a source of comfort to me. She was a benevolent constant presence in an uncertain world. I hope I have conveyed something of the respect I feel for her in my creation.

You are welcome to use the Haiga but please credit Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl and provide a link back to this blog.

November PAD Challenge 2021: The Ghost of Thanksgiving

Ornery Owl Sez: This Bop is a Bit Bleak.

If you prefer to avoid morose verse, you have been warned.

As a child, I could look forward to the third Thursday in November

Being a time to refresh and connect, a day of quiet, untroubled play

In the home where I lived during the year that everything was almost perfect

Except for the ferocious bullying I endured at school, but so it goes

There may have been a fire burning bright in the fireplace

When we sat down at the table, I was truly thankful

For whom the bell tolls, time marches on

In current times I've found that everything has changed

Time does not crawl, it hurtles forth like a bullet train

Crushing my memories beneath its merciless wheels

It took loved ones and ideas from me without a backward glance

There is no doorway through which I can return to that year of perfect holidays

But if I could find a filament of the hopefulness I felt

Perhaps I could sew patches over the holes in my heart

Maybe I could recall the feeling of the third Thursday in November

For whom the bell tolls, time marches on

I sit staring out the window wondering who I think I'm fooling

For decades now Thanksgiving has only been a harried mess

We usually don't even celebrate it on Thursday if we bother with it at all

It's just a day when the stores won't be open if I need something

My father believed in the promise of Thanksgiving

But he has been gone now for eleven years

For whom the bell tolls, time marches on

~ornery owl~

prompts

I changed the poem's title from "The Ghost at the Table" to "The Ghost of Thanksgiving" as I thought it was a better fit.

Prompt: Write a poem about an epiphany experienced regarding the holidays.
Perhaps the child I was experienced the unfortunate epiphany that a happy holiday does not guarantee a lifetime of happiness.
Perhaps the older adult me experienced the epiphany that although the holidays can never be the same I can still make them happy if I care to.
Perhaps it's a bit of both.

Prompt: Write a Thursday poem

Prompt: Write a Bop poem

A Confession in Three Brief Reverse Haibuns for my Father

Image copyright Bill Dodd

college professor
he overthought everything
scrutinizing all

His thought process was on so many levels that he gave himself a phobia of heights.

dithering daughter
mind off in all directions
embarrassing girl

Random words in front of other random words create a random sentence.

despite his sharp mind
he thought himself a failure
he could not fix her

I come from a tribe of head-hunters, so I will never need a shrink.

Write a "confession" poem.

I was also inspired by the D'Verse Poets Jisei prompt. However, I won't include this poem in the blog hop because these are not actually Jisei, and because I have 12 lines total rather than 10.

My father will be 10 years departed from the world on the 28th of this month. I had a strained relationship with him. On one hand, he loved me. On the other hand, I was a great source of disappointment and distress for him. The only way our relationship would not have been strained is if I had been someone else. He did not know how to deal with a girl who was not meek and compliant and who was terribly troubled--as it turns out, mostly because of trauma inflicted on me by other people rather than because of an organic anomaly in my brain, which is what I believed for many years.

For many years, I thought that I had type 2 bipolar disorder and "borderline personality disorder." It is my strong opinion at this point that I do not. I stopped taking Lithium last year and have experienced no extreme mood swings. I do have a tendency to depression and anxiety. I have ADHD. But the thing that led to my extreme mood expressions when I was younger was not bipolar disorder, it was complex PTSD.

I have come to the opinion that "borderline personality disorder" is a bullshit sexist diagnosis. This diagnosis is overwhelmingly applied to girls and women. Looking at the histories of women with this diagnosis, they have all been traumatized, often sexually, and their trauma has been belittled and minimized.

I was not only bullied on a daily basis when I was growing up, but I was also sexually assaulted on more than one occasion. I came to realize that one event in particular that happened when I was 15 years old affected me much more than I allowed myself to believe it did. Looking back, I realize that I started acting out a lot following this event. If anyone cares to read my thoughts regarding this matter, they can be found here.

My father came from a different time with a different set of values, and he did not understand me, which is not to say that he didn't value me. He always helped me monetarily, but I always wished that he would actually hear me. As I got older, I tried to accept him as he was. I miss him and I hope he has found peace.

Perfect Imperfection

worthy of
more than you could dream of
you lie in time's eternal embrace

light and dark

I wish that
I had been worthy of
being held in your loving embrace

you were more
than you will ever know
while I am less than nothing at all

Tattooed on my Heart

This is the tattoo on my left shoulder
The picture was taken by my son
You're welcome to use it if you do so in a respectful manner
Not to put too fine a point on it, but if you can't bring yourself to be respectful, you can fuck off.

my plush, furry friend
how you made this hard heart soft
life coarse and cruel
losing you made me grow cold
although my dead heart still beats

~cie~

You Need the Notes
I really can't abide the kind of person whose first comment upon seeing a picture of someone's tattoo is "ew, I don't like tattoos." I'm quite sure they didn't get the tattoo with you in mind, Sunshine.

I got my first tattoo at 49 years old. It is on my right deltoid.

To me, it's fairly obvious that a tattoo like this is done to honor someone, which, in fact, it was. But some sanctimonious sort had to point out their dislike of tattoos to show how saintly they are because they don't have any tattoos.

I've known heavily tattooed people who embody what I think are the characteristics a saint should have, such as empathy and tolerance, and people with no tattoos who are caustic and judgmental. I know whose company I'd rather keep.

When I was living in downtown Denver at nineteen, it wasn't the punks who made me feel so uncomfortable that I spent most of the summer hiding in my apartment. It was the clean-cut guys who thought it was fun to follow me, whistling at me like they were calling to a dog.

I judge people based on their behavior, not their physical appearance.

To link to more poetical ink, this is the place you should go, I think.
