30 Days of Haiga: Precarious

Background Image by Kyle Green
Text art and effects by Ornery Owl (Cara Hartley)

An Essay in which Ornery Owl Ruminates on Realism

Does today’s Haiga offering represent realism?

The effects that I have applied to the picture evidently do not.

The original image may. It is simply a picture of ducks walking over cracking ice.

Depending on one’s interpretation, the Senryu accompanying the now-transformed image could fall into the category of realism.

It is no surprise

When a crack forms in the ice

Walking on a lake

The above verse could be interpreted through the lens of realism. If one walks over the ice covering a lake, it would be distressing, but not surprising, to see cracks forming in the ice.

However, it is probably evident to anyone familiar with poetry, poets, or, if you are supremely unfortunate, me, that there is more to these words than meets the eye.

This poem is a metaphor for taking risks.

I am taking risks by sharing my work.

I risk being told that my work is shit.

I risk being told that I have misinterpreted yet another prompt.

I risk feeling stupid and worthless.

And yet, I have something to say. So today, I feel up to risking these things. Another day, perhaps not so much.

It is possible that Ornery Owl is only able to accomplish realism through photography.

I present one of my realistic (and horrible) photographs for your viewing displeasure.

Ornery Photography: Sepia Haze

All photos are copyright 2020 by Cara Hartley. You are welcome to use them, but please credit me.

The yellow house on the left in the bottom photo is where my son and I live. The only way we could have a house of this size is by living in the middle of nowhere. The house was built in 1910.

I don't know if you can see how hazy it is. The top two photos were taken yesterday. The sun was red. Today you can't even see the sun because of the smoke.

We are getting smoke from the fire near Red Feather Lakes, which is Northwest of Fort Collins. Fort Collins is one of our neighboring cities. It is about 60 miles away. Our closest neighboring city is Cheyenne at 45 miles away.

We are also getting the smoke from the West Coast fires.

We had an air quality alert warning people not to drive today. I stepped outside for a few minutes to take the pictures and went back in. I have asthma, so a long walk in this smoky haze wouldn't be the best plan.

I don't understand how people can continue to deny climate change. These kinds of disasters are becoming more common every year.

Anyway, there is today's cheery photo set.

Ornery Photography + Not So Silent Sunday: From the Treetops

The images were taken on 17 January 2017 at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. You are welcome to use them, but please credit me. Cara Hartley/The Real Cie/The Ornery Old Lady.

I am not entirely sure, but I believe the skeleton in the bottom image may belong to one of those big brown tree-climbing critters in the top image.

I've changed things up a little with my photography shares. First off, I'm ditching the long titles. Silent Sunday (which is often Not So Silent Sunday) is specific to me (although not originated by me), so it is included in the title.

These photography posts take more time than you might think to prepare, create, and share, which is why I sometimes don't do them for a while. I always have multiple projects that I am engaged in. I do consider myself a professional writer, even though I currently make very little money from my craft. I am evidently not a professional photographer, but I do enjoy taking photographs and sharing them with those who will tolerate my amateurish attempts.

Ornery Photography: Camera Critters #597 + Saturday's Critters #316 + Shadow Shot Sunday + Not So Silent Sunday + Sunday Selections #462: Prehistoric Polar Paradise

Images captured 17 January 2017 at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Copyright Cara Hartley/The Real Cie/The Ornery Old Lady. You are welcome to use them, but please credit me.

I would stake my reputation that the skeleton in the second picture comes from the Coryphodon, the toothy critter in the diorama. Keep in mind that my reputation is worth the counterfeit three-dollar bill that it's printed on.

Also, I am honestly not sure which of the shadows in the diorama are real and which are painted.

Notes:
One cool thing about the job I had between July and November of 2017 (the job that messed up my left arm) was the fact that I got to take pictures of so many interesting things. I drove around in the car in the second picture. It's parked in front of the townhouse where my son and I lived before moving to the Grover Hotel.

I don't have that car anymore and I'm not sad. That thing was always breaking down and leaving me stranded. I ended up trading it to my mechanic to use as parts in exchange for him forgiving me the cost of the water pump he'd installed. It probably would have broken down before it even made Greeley.

Camera Critters #590 + Saturday's Critters #308 + Shadow Shot Sunday + Not So Silent Sunday + Sunday Selections #454: Haibun for a Sea Skeleton

I have written a Haibun in honor of this creature on this not-so-silent Sunday:

There are all kinds of wild shadows and reflections happening in this photo. The prehistoric water denizen swims eternally in an ethereal sea as creatures from its future marvel at its skeleton and wonder about its life.

you swim forever
a ghost in the twilight sea
only bones remain
