Snippet

For Wes

It’s been 25 years since I saw you play. The rhythm of the music shook the audience to our bones. For a couple of hours, we were all friends.

I dreamed about you last night. I was backstage staring at your tattoo of yourself on your arm. I can’t remember if you have tattoos, but if you do, I’m certain you don’t have one of yourself. One of the reasons I had it so bad for you is because you don’t have a big ego.

I spent the rest of the dream unable to find a way into the show.

icy mountain roads

winter trees covered in snow

wind cuts through to bone

Yes, my desk is in a storage area. Technically, it sits between my sleep area and storage. My bedroom is long and about the size of a studio apartment. To put it kindly, the guy who owned the house previously made some very unconventional remodeling choices. If I look to my left, I'm looking at the remnants of what used to be a wall dividing two rooms. I get the feeling a lot of beer and happy herb were involved in his creative architectural decisions.

Ornery Owl is a wise old bird who seeks the truth behind the lies. She uses her observations to heal the wounded soul. Excerpt

About Prodigal Moon

I was inspired by the idea of something that disappears and returns on a predictable schedule (the visible moon) and something that cannot return (a lost love.)

Prodigal Moon

Prodigal moon

You can spin me a silent tune

But you can’t return my love to me

I dare you to try

Catch him on the fly

Before he escapes ‘cross the sea

Ornery Owl's Mercifully Brief End of Post Rumination

No one:

“Gosh, I wonder how Ornery Owl deals with imposter syndrome.”

Me:

“Well, boy howdy, I’m glad you asked! Let me tell you all about that!”

The answer:

I still haven’t got that shit figured out.

I know I’m capable of writing between 1000 and 2000 words a day, no problem.

I take on multiple writing projects every month.

I complete at least one project every month.

I submit or self-publish something every month.

Yet I still find myself thinking “I just can’t do this” and sabotaging myself every month, waiting till the last minute to complete said project.

Dreams of Disaster

What do dreams of disaster mean?

Can chaotic nightmares compare

To a true emergency scene?

What do dreams of disaster mean?

What knowledge can we from them glean

When studying them if we dare?

What do dreams of disaster mean?

Can chaotic nightmares compare?

Notes

This poem was included in the recently published Soul Ink anthology along with twenty-four more of my poems and works by other poets. The ebook is only $1.99, which is a lot of poetry for a little money!

I have recurring nightmares about disasters. Tornadoes top the list, but nuclear strikes are far from unheard of, and volcanoes sometimes show up at the party. Floods are, surprisingly, less frequent. I've written about my experiences with my car being hit by a wave of water during a flood. Perhaps I've repressed that memory, or at least the feelings that go along with it, because I don't enjoy having panic attacks.

https://poetryofthenetherworld.blogspot.com/2022/04/a-hard-rain-in-boulder-colorado-wep.html

I imagine I had one of my tornado dreams before writing this poem.

Another greatest hit involves driving down a steep road with soft brakes.

Also topping the charts is driving into the mountains and coming to a chasm, which I proceed to somehow carry my car across. While this dream might sound triumphant, it is actually extremely nerve-wracking.

Another banger involves finding myself parked beneath an underpass in a seedy part of town.

Yet another all-time favorite involves being in an underground spa and trying to find a vacant stall in the locker/shower room with a door or curtain so I can have some privacy while doing the necessary. Most of the stalls don't have doors. There are usually only women in this area, but sometimes there are men as well because why not up the discomfort ante, I guess.

Bathroom dreams have only one true meaning:

The sleeping person needs to do their business.

I get that part, but why does my subconscious always create a poorly lit spa/changing room setting with pipes running everywhere?

In any case, I am sharing this with multiple blog hops. I'm currently working to finish a story that has been giving me fits so I can submit it to Dragon Soul Press for potential inclusion in their Beautiful Darkness 2 anthology.

https://dragonsoulpress.com/shortstorycalls/

My PTSD has also been really extra this month. I've finally found someone I think I can work with on the many years of awfulness that I've shoved down into the recesses of my mind. For some reason, my recent dentist's appointment brought a whole bunch of crap to the surface. I need to go back in four days and try again because I wasn't able to go through with the procedure. So, I'm kind of a wreck and need to do what's easiest. I hope you can understand.

All the Comforts of Space

This chair isn't made of wood or anything. It's made from some kind of highly advanced extraterrestrial material and designed for the most evolved comfort.

An FBI agent named Scully
Followed a trail down into a gully
She found a UFO seat
Its comfort couldn't be beat
So she sat and stared into space dully.

Why the hell did you write this, Owl?

Well, obnoxious asker of questions, my audience was clamoring for a follow-up to my ultra-popular, smash hit poem, Gross Encounters of the Worst Kind.

Okay, one reader casually mentioned that since Mulder got his own poem, it might be nice if Scully had a poem too. So I racked my brain until I shook out a word that rhymed with Scully and came up with the above. No need for applause. Buying a book is thanks enough!

Gross Encounters of the Worst Kind #WEP

Image by pencil parker from Pixabay
Just who is responsible for this travesty?

An FBI agent named Mulder

Researched a UFO sighting near Boulder

He stepped in alien poo

Which ruined his shoe

So the trail went a little bit colder

Don't you even try to pin this on me, UFO Jockey!

Ornery Owl says:
Yeah, sure, you can give this piece the full-on critique if you really feel compelled to do so, but I can save you some time.

1) This is not a great poem. I don't believe for a second it will win any prizes. That isn't its purpose.
2) The poem has too many syllables in the second line.
3) Depending on what part of the world you're from, Mulder and Boulder may not rhyme very well. My horrific accent makes everything sound like it got shoved down a garbage disposal. You, however, may be one of those high-fallutin' sorts who enunciate words clearly.
4) The poem's genre is comedy. If it made you laugh, cool. If it didn't make you laugh, at least you only had to suffer through 28 words.

That's about all I have to say about that. Until next time!

Who What When Where Why? #8Sunday

Snippet

Who What When Where Why?

Who is the voice of the wind?

The ghost of a soldier listening for the elusive thunder of artillery as he sits beside a rank gutter in a ruined city.

What is an owl?

An ornery creature behaving as a generator of truth in a fog.

When will the soldier return home?

When the cowbird drops the acorn in a quahog while bursting into song.

Where does the river of imagination flow?

Into a grove of miracles where a mercurial cyclops consumes oysters and seaweed.

Why do the people cry?

They are longing for a meal of cheese and bread with truffle spread culminating in a dessert of pie baked from a combination of pureed pumpkin, salt, allspice, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, sugar, milk, and eggs.

Another Autumn

Hello Poetry People! I was going to participate in the A to Z Blogging Challenge on this blog, but I've decided not to do that. I'm still going to share the title poem from my first poetry volume, Another Autumn.

Another Autumn

I find myself standing

On the edge of another autumn

Wondering if this is the year

That the world disappears

And I slide into nothing

And I am devoured

By all the foolish dreams

That I abandoned by the roadside

As I run from my past

Into a fragile future

Each new year as harrowing as the one just passed

This work is copyright 2020 by Ornery Owl (Cara Hartley)

You are welcome to use or quote any or all of it in your own work so long as you credit me.

If you'd like to purchase or borrow a copy of Another Autumn, here is the link.

And now, today's musical inspiration.

The following snappy snippet of snippy scolding doesn't apply to most of you. I haven't had time to participate in Weekend Writing Warriors for the past several months. The last few times I did, there was a person with whom I wasn't familiar who nit-picked the ting-tang-walla-walla-bing-bang out of the eight to ten-sentence snippets from my forthcoming fix-up novel. Clearly, this story was not to this person's tastes, and I was unsure why they couldn't just ignore it and be on their way since it was already in pre-order and I wasn't about to change anything else.

Enjoy the poem or don't. I'm not seeking a critique. It's from a book that has already been published. I'm providing information about the book for those people who think they might enjoy reading more of my poems. For those who don't think they'd enjoy more of my poems, don't visit the link. It's simple.

This is probably the only time I'll participate in Weekend Writing Warriors this month. I may return in May when things are hopefully a little less mad.

30 Days of Haiga 2022: Blue Memories

text

if I never stop
how can I appreciate
these blue memories

notes
You are welcome to use both the original image and the Haiga, but please credit Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl and provide a link back to this blog.

For the snippet-sharing blogs, you can consider the poem to be the snippet. It is part of a WIP, so there is no buy link yet. You can read the forthcoming blather if you wish, or not. Whatever.

I don't always explain my poetry. But when I do...well, I do.

I selected the image and wrote the Senryu at 1:30 in the morning. I had been going and going and going all day the day before. I posted the Haiga for yesterday and the day before. Yes, despite my assertion in the entry for the 2nd, I did that.

After creating and posting the Haiga, I did a lot of writing on the story I will submit for the Reign of Fire anthology from Dragon Soul Press.

Here, don't say I never gave you anything. If you have a story with dragons or you want to write a dragon story between 3000 and 15,000 words by September 30, you too can submit your story. The details are here.

Along with those accomplishments, I also made meals and earned a $5 Amazon gift card by playing games on Just Play. If you want to know more about that, read this tawdry tweet.

When I was younger, I used to get scolded for being "lazy" and "flaky" because I had trouble focusing. Now I have this terrible drive to always be doing, doing, doing. It is very hard for me to stop. Relaxation is a difficult concept. There is asleep and there is awake, and when awake, I must do.

If something of the personality survives the death of the body, I will be an extremely restless spirit. Even in death, I will not stop. I will have places to go, and people to haunt.

No, ProWritingAid, it would not enhance the previous sentence's readability to change it to "I will have places to people to haunt." That doesn't make any damn sense at all.

As a child, I loved finding the beauty in the world. I loved to daydream. Both qualities were shamed out of me. I learned that being a daydreamer was a bad thing and that if I wasn't always doing; I was lazy.

Grammarly, I'm not even going to go there with why "if I wasn't always doing it" sounds really bad.

Anyway, that is my Haiga for today plus a whole bunch of blather. I hope you enjoyed some or all of it.

I have big plans for this year's Haiga collection. I am considering releasing the resulting book in print form and an e-book. I'm going to see how hard it would be to turn the images into coloring pages. My intention is to give teachers, including parents homeschooling their kids, permission to make as many copies as they need, however often they need.

I'm not even sure it's possible to print from a Kindle e-book other than to take a screenshot. I scoured my Kindle for PC app's commands and couldn't find anything. Maybe someone out there knows more than I do.

So's ya know, here is how I'm gonna roll with comments on other blogs.

There are currently 7 participants ahead of me on the Earthweal link. I will comment on all their posts so long as their blog allows me to. I sometimes have trouble commenting on WordPress or blogs hosted by Wix or other non-Blogger platforms.

There are 43 participants ahead of me at D'Verse Poets. I can't possibly comment on everyone's work. I am currently working on two new projects including this one plus attempting to edit and format some works that I have been attempting to edit and format for months. Hence, I am an overly busy bee who has not yet even eaten breakfast. I will open up good ole Random.org and let them help me choose seven people's blogs to comment on.

And that, Fiends, is how I roll.

With apologies to Leonard Nimoy, Gene Roddenberry, and Mr. Spock himself. The wonderful, terrible idea came to me like a flash--like a vision. I just couldn't resist.

I used the word prompt "vivacious" from Moonwashed Musings.

You may think this Friday poem appeared on Saturday. I assure you, it didn't. I would never do anything that sneaky.

"I would do nothing that sneaky" sounds weird and stilted, ProWritingAid. I refuse to use that turn of phrase.

Charity Sunday: Save the Colorado River #CharitySunday #8Sunday #SnipSun

Image by Brigitte Werner from Pixabay

Howdy Solks, I mean Folks! Today's featured charity is the Save the Colorado River project.

More about the charity in a minute. I wrote a poem specifically for this post and I am going to share it with you now.

The smell of death surrounds us as the rivers run dry

Life lost as fish lie stranded in the mud

Corporations don’t miss a beat when told

There’s a chance to build another factory in the wild silence

This year their profits could be twice what they made in the last

It’s impossible to imagine that people once revered the enchanted stars

I utilized four prompts in the creation of this poem. I will provide the links to those at the end of the post.

Now, about the Save the Colorado River project. Per their mission statement:

Save The Colorado’s mission is to protect and restore the Colorado River and its tributaries from the source to the sea. Save The Colorado focuses on fighting irresponsible water projects, supporting alternatives to proposed dams and diversions, fighting and adapting to climate change, supporting river and fish species restoration, and removing deadbeat dams.

They have a subproject which is close to my heart. I lived and worked in the Boulder area for close to 20 years.

https://savethecolorado.org/campaigns/boulder-creek-program/

Per the website:

Save The Colorado has an active program around protecting and restoring the Boulder Creek watershed in Boulder County, Colorado.  We have identified and committed to these efforts to preserve and protect the watershed.

I will donate a dollar to the Save the Colorado River project for every comment received on this post.

Following the post, you will find the necessary hoppy links. This is a Charity Sunday post, so that hop is at the top. Then, of course, I wish to share the links to the prompts that inspired the poem. Following that will be links to other hops I'm sharing the post with.

I know some of you create separate posts for every hop, but I become overwhelmed when I try to do that. I have too many projects going on and my brain already operates like someone put it in a blender and pressed the Liquefy setting.

Here's some music to enjoy while you go hopping down the bloggy trail.

Here's the link in case you can't see the player, Player!

Here are the Hop Links. Visit 'em to find more great charities and stuff to read.
