First and Last Memories: WEP Challenge

I can't remember
the first time I saw your face
I was a squalling goblin

I remember well
the last time I saw your face
your earthly struggle finished

I recall winter
a time of painful beauty
you always loved the holidays

With love from your Ornery daughter

I'll always remember the Christmas when I was 10 years old as the best Christmas ever. Somehow, everything just came together as it should that year.

The father owl in the image has bright blue eyes. My father had blue eyes as well.

 notes
Major points only, I think. The work is kind of personal.

The poem is a Choka, a form of Japanese poetry used for storytelling. I chose a 5-7-7 pattern for the verses.

April PAD Challenge /NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 7

How's it going, Poetry People? We're a week into this year's challenge and today for your inspirational pleasure I present you with a tasty treat. It's the Director's Cut of Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii which includes interviews and studio footage with the band and, of course, you have Pink Floyd's one-of-a-kind prog rock sound to inspire your poetic creations.

Today's chapbook chapter is a Choka inspired by the following three prompts:

Broken New World

Prompts Used

I interpreted the prompt as "new world" and described a common scenario from the current dystopia. I take it that nobody reading my poetry or my blog posts is Jeff Bezos, Cruella DeVil, or Elon Musk. If you are Jeff Bezos, Cruella DeVil, or Elon Musk, consider yourself lectured. The rest of you need not take it that way.

Before I hop up on the pulpit, I want to let you know about a free resource that you never have to feel guilty about taking advantage of. I participate in Make It Happen Thursday at the Go Dog Go Cafe. Enjoy sharing tips and tricks for inspiration and breaking out of writer's block while meeting other authors and poets. It's a win-win.

And now on to the inspiration behind today's poem.

I feel like I sell my soul every time I publish on Amazon or buy anything on Amazon. I publish there because that's where everyone buys books these days. Amazon allows me to make my books available through Kindle Unlimited so readers can try before they buy. I keep the prices of my books low by selling on Amazon. Publishing on Amazon makes good business sense.

I earn about $5 per week in Amazon gift cards by farting around playing games on my phone through the Just Play app. I take advantage of Amazon pricing. I'd like to think that if I ever make it big, I will be a saint and only buy directly from the source and only sustainably produced goods. I'd like to think that, but I don't know if it's true. I'm guilty of supporting a system that harms others.

write a poem that argues against, or somehow questions, a proverb or saying.

I chose the saying "an ill wind blows nobody good" and started the poem with these lines.

an ill wind blew in

leaving me an abundance

I think I can reveal this much without disqualifying my manuscript from consideration.

write an abundance poem

I zeroed in on the "abundance" that even a broke schlub like me can enjoy by shopping on Amazon, a company that takes advantage of Chinese sweatshop labor and treats its own employees like used snot rags.

Does Amazon benefit from the permanent lower class that exists in most countries?

Damn skippy.

Many things need to change before people living on the dole (including disability, social security, and other welfare programs) are willing or able to be super-selective about where their products are coming from. For instance, with meat, I am in proximity to an independently run butcher shop that gets its product from small local farms with high standards for ethical treatment of their livestock. This butcher shop charges no more for this high-quality product than the grocery store does for their meats.

My son and I make compromises in other areas. Most of our food comes from the monthly food bank. Any meat we get through the food bank does not meet these high standards.

Many people are in a worse position than I am. I have a working vehicle. I can drive to Fort Collins once a month to buy meat. While I would prefer that everyone who eats meat purchased an ethically sourced product, I'm not in a position to lecture anybody.

Most of us are not benefiting in the current economy. Raising awareness is one thing, scolding is another. I know I'm more than capable of jumping on my high horse, but I don't enjoy the fall when I get knocked off. My advice is to avoid high horses and to support local businesses whenever you can. I know it isn't always workable when you're one of the Broke Folk.

November PAD Challenge 2021: A Special Dream (Choka)

Image by mostafa meraji from Pixabay

sometimes I dare dream
that someday we will accept
people as they are
fat or thin, black, white, or brown
short, medium, tall
with love and respect for all
only acceptance
will allow healing to start
put an end to shame
stopping the bitter harvest
self-loathing and tears
that are the direct result
of teaching people
to be ashamed of themselves
halt the bitter harvest now

Helloween 2021: The Coming Inferno (Choka)

Background by Frederic Solli Wandem on Unsplash

Sharing With

the notes you need
Evidently, I'm not ready to wrap up the Haiga party yet. Today I have a splendidly gloomy Choka for you inspired by the Six Sentence Story prompt and by the resulting post from Six Sentence Stories' Ghostess with the Mostest. After all, who could fail to be inspired by a post including a video from the mighty Maiden, especially when the song is entitled "Hell on Earth" and I frequently wax poetic about climate change?

The October Spooky Writing Challenge is a go, but I'm using that in a few of its incarnations for slapping out stories. I am using other writing prompts and the images that I find through either pixlr.com or Pixabay for my own October poetry month, or, as I like to call it, Helloween.

This is by no means an official challenge, but if anyone has poetry or stories that they'd like to share this month, you are welcome to do so in the comments.

I'm not sure what's happening with Morgan, who usually hosts OctPoWriMo. I'm concerned about her.

Colors of a Life in Shadow (Choka/Senryu)

Free use image by Stefan Keller on Pixabay

I used to be nice
when all things were possible
bright colors of life

in the blue hotel
porcelain skin fades to gray
shades block out the light

I am seen as mean
when I refuse advances
predatory men

my heart draws the shade
against games that lead to naught
I protect myself

~cie~

write a nice and/or mean poem

https://godoggocafe.com/2020/11/17/tuesday-writing-prompt-challenge-tuesday-november-17-2020/

I used the Quadrille prompt from D'verse Poets, which was "Possibility." However, Quadrille poems are supposed to be 44 words. This poem is 53 words, and I didn't want to remove any of them because it would ruin the flow.

I'll give credit because I used the prompt.

Same Old Spell: A Feminist Choka

Free use image copyright Javier Rodriguez on Pixabay

Translation: we always have to recreate a tongue that shows respect for the woman if we walked for a moment in her shoes we would feel indignant

the magic has gone
from the soulless holy days
nothing is special

remember childhood
when holidays were magic
the veil was thinner

at midnight we heard
the spirit of the season
singing lullaby

now what goes between
disdain in each eye contact
when strangers first meet

no magic words now
can't compensate for the hate
fear of the unknown

like our ancestors
demand self-deprecation
from every woman

measuring her worth
based on the size of her hips
is misogyny

aura of the past
surrounding the present time
fertile ground for hate

new wokeness seems
it's the same misogyny
with a fresh accent

will we ever wake
will truth see the light of day
blowing in the wind

~cie~

noted
Hate has many faces, all of them ugly. This poem addresses the ways in which the misogyny that distressed me as a young girl, inspiring me to secretly declare myself a feminist when I was eight years old, is alive and well today with a new coat of paint.

Women are no longer expected by society as a whole to live on an allowance doled out by their patronizing husbands while they keep a spotless house, cook a perfect dinner, and populate the world. We are, however, still expected to be helpmeets to men, to not have too many aspirations of our own, to keep our discomfort to ourselves, to capitulate to the demands of others, and to look like a Stepford wife with sex-hungry eyes and the body of a teenage girl who happens to have perfect double d-cup breasts while doing so.

Women who speak up for the needs and rights of women are still threatened with corrective rape and called all manner of humiliating names. These days, these threats are made in the name of "wokeness" and a perverse brand of "inclusivity" that excludes women while calling itself "feminism" and in which women are shouted down for using words to describe our own anatomy and health issues or for using words such as "mother" or "breastfeeding." Meanwhile, nobody seems to have a problem with the word "father," or with anyone saying that men get prostate cancer, and men are not expected to share their changing rooms with those with female anatomy for the sake of "inclusivity."

It's a step well backward in the name of progress. I really should not be surprised that women are the ones to suffer under the new woke boss, who just happens to be the same as the old, unwoke boss but is wearing a hip new suit and drinking a fair-trade latte while he tweets out profanity-laced pejoratives to the "transphobic" cunts who dare to question why we can't say the word "woman" when talking about women's health and who take issue with the idea of sharing our changing rooms with a bearded man with meat and veg fully intact. Women who wish to have a female caregiver or health care provider for intimate care or invasive examinations are labeled hateful and told that we are "weaponizing our trauma."

Those who have been smart enough to avoid Twitter (I was for a long time, but, unfortunately, the book reviews and promotions necessitated me taking it up again) may not be aware of these peculiar developments and think that I am being overly dramatic. Sadly, I am not.

I have become more aware than ever in the past five years that both the right and the left hate women. The right clothes their hate in "family values" and religious doctrine while the left demands that women be "inclusive" and "flexible", by which they mean framing women's issues to include men, all while looking and acting like porn stars 24-7.

And that is the delightful place from which today's happy little verse springs.

The Colors of a Life (Choka)

Free use image from Valiphotos on Pixabay

the leaves are changing
as they do every autumn
to eternity

find inspiration
in the place where I now live
not intuitive

I find surprises
things and events undesired
disappointment comes

people say it's smart
forever follow your gut
I reach for candy

colors of the day
weave into the knot of tears
wrap around my heart

Braggart in Chief (Choka)

Image copyright F. Muhammad

lost in bravado

forget employing reason

boasting fortitude

be independent

of the need for bravado

absolute freedom

boasting fortitude

bravado is not real strength

time of reckoning

compassionate mind

to be flexible is peace

forget bravado

~cie~

now the notes

I combined today's prompts, did not follow either of them to the letter, and wound up with this choka/senryu. I am so done with the Braggart in Chief who is running my country (into the ground). I can only hope that the majority of voters are done with him too, and the majority of people will turn out to vote. We cannot endure four more years of disdain and deceit from this inept criminal.

Choka: Wedding Bell or Doom Knell

some people sing praise
of the wonderful magic
love is like the spring
flowers and hearts are blooming
love is like summer
moon June tune and all of that
but to me love is
a whispered seductive lie
in a dark hallway
lustful shadow, lying tongue
love a mausoleum
in winter cemetery
filled with the dead dreams
of youth fallen years ago
love a pretty face
with a mouthful of grave dust
some sing praise to love
I turn my back and walk on

~cie~
