November PAD Challenge 2021: Dear Me As I Used To Be

Image by Tandem X Visuals on Unsplash

“Whatever you do, you can’t do that.”
Dear Me as I Used to Be, just wanting to experience all the colors life offers
your vivacious grin faded like verdant summer
for so few ever viewed you through unprejudiced eyes
let this Samhain be your time of restoration, for you are as worthy as all souls
open your eyes and see, Little Sister, you aren't a mistake

~me to myself~

Helloween 2021 Day 15 and 16: Only When I Sleep

Image by Gerd Altman on Pixabay

only when I sleep do I remember
what it was to be in love
love is nothing but trickery
of the mind and heart and eye
my aural misinterpretation
of your oral explanation
my controversial mask
and your controversial past
led to the devastation of you and I, aye?
if I have three wishes
while dreaming with the fishes
in the afterglow of life gone by
will one of those wishes be to heal our bond?
or is it best to let bygones say goodbye
to let the scales fall from my eyes
so you can stop dragging my heart around through eternity

It's not a sonnet (obviously), partly because it probably wouldn't have been a sonnet anyway and partly because I didn't know that OctPoWriMo was a thing again this year.

I am not going to officially participate in the Weekly Scribblings anymore. I have gotten myself in the shit with that prompt more than once because of my distractibility, inability to follow instructions properly, and just plain mutton-headedness.

At closing in on 60 years old, it's clear that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but these days I can exercise the option to bugger off rather than sit in the corner with a dunce hat on while the teacher scolds me and the other students bask in the schadenfreude.

It's better for me to bring my goods to the Writers Pantry, where anything goes as long as it's under 369 words. I can run with scissors, not play well with others, and misinterpret rules to my shriveled little brain's content.

Climate Change Blues

Free Use Image from Pixabay

I
you pave paradise
and put up a parking lot
play it on repeat

you pave paradise
and build another strip mall
or subdivision

and put up a parking lot
so when the sun beats down hot
things get hotter yet

play it on repeat
thermometer rising more
waves erode the shore

II
you pave paradise
and build another strip mall
or subdivision

you pave paradise
cookie-cutter houses stand
where there was wetland

and build another strip mall
cause you never have enough
disposable goods

or subdivision
filled with overpriced houses
homeless in the street

III
and put up a parking lot
so when the sun beats down hot
everything sizzles

and put up a parking lot
heat wavers on the asphalt
ocean levels rise

so when the sun beats down hot
there is no place to escape
rising mercury

things get hotter yet
if we don't make some changes
it will be too late

IV
play it on repeat
thermometer rising more
waves erode the shore

play it on repeat
there are some who like to claim
nothing has gone wrong

thermometer rising more
they say its just a cycle
irresponsible

waves erode the shore
close in on coastal cities
we must be the change

Hold onto your hats, People, and let me explain the multiple methods of my madness.

April PAD Challenge 2021
Day 7:
Take a song title, change a word in the title, and make this the title of your poem.
I chose "Cool Change" by Little River Band, altered it to Climate Change, and stuck the word "Blues" on the end because I'm a renegade like that.

D'Verse Poets
Write a circular poem.

The Double Troiku is a form created by Kristian of Carpe Diem Haiku Kai.
To write a Troiku, one first creates a Haiku, then writes three Haiku from the lines of the first Haiku.
A Double Troiku takes things one step further, writing three new Haiku from each of the new Haiku created from the original Troiku.
Anyway, the poem repeatedly "circles back" to the first Haiku.
There you have the form for my "circular" poem!

Mindlovemisery's Menagerie
Music Prompt
Write a piece based on Woodstock or another song by Joni Mitchell. I selected Big Yellow Taxi. Now, you never see the Big Yellow Taxi mentioned in the poem, but trust me, it's there, idling in the background as it waits for its passenger.

The Ugly Duckling

Free use image from Pixabay

The ugly duckling

Is actually darling

But he wouldn’t know it, you know

Exposed to the ignorance

Of those with small, angry souls

Cruelty the cohesive adhesive between them

They hoped their hateful words

Would make him moan in anguished defeat

Feeding their sadistic need

To torture one different from themselves

Many years have gone by

Since those bad old golden rule days

A humble man clad in a t-shirt and jeans

Radiates an understated, no-frills grace

He speaks in an almost sleepy way

As he recalls those bygone days

In the spring of his life

His eyes shimmer with sterling silver tears

As he praises his late brother

For creating an empire

Ensuring that they would never again go hungry

He does not notice the honeysuckle

Climbing the trellis

As the young woman asks him

If he isn’t downplaying his contributions to the world

He doesn’t take her meaning

For when he looks in the mirror

He sees an ugly little man

He does not realize that the ugly duckling is beautiful

For he was so often told that he was not

The hateful word-arrows slung by fools

Create a not so fun funhouse filled with mirrors

That distort what their victims see

When they see their own reflection

Let us not utter words

That leave scars on others’ souls

Everyone deserves

To know the goodness in themselves

Lives are devastated

By ignorance and cruelty

And unrealistic standards of beauty

Created by advertisers

To sell magazine copy

And products that nobody needs

Love,

Cie

The Back Story

I was 16 years old when I saw the movie Let There Be Rock in 1980. It was no surprise to me when I learned that the Young brothers had been bullied by their classmates. When asked to describe himself, Angus referred to himself as “that ugly little man.” Malcolm was painfully shy and had substance abuse issues.

In a recent interview, Angus praised Malcolm, who died in 2017. The interviewer noted that Angus seemed to be downplaying his own contributions. His facial expression and words indicated that he didn’t view his contributions as particularly important.

Angus Young achieved success and renown, but the cruel words he heard remain with him.
