Grodes

Image by Else Siegel from Pixabay

Fair warning that the following post is chock-a-block with profanity.
If you're sensitive about that sort of thing, don't read it.

What if we replace
the word prejudice with Grodes--
could we see the truth?

I would like to suggest
we get rid of the Grodes,
rather than eradicate
those who are different,
either by physical means
or by enforced compliance.

I'm no fool, though.
I'm aware that some asshole would come along,
suggesting that the Grodes were the people
who didn't comply
rather than the prejudices
such people face.

They would take my suggestion
that we get rid of the Grodes.
They'd corrupt and pervert it
until it was unrecognizable.

In the end, I'd be blamed
While some motherfucker
who resembled donald tRump
or his idol Vladimir Putin
or some other corrupt dictator
with a cult of personality
would come along
and take all the credit
for getting rid of the Grodes.

Not once acknowledging
that I meant something entirely different.

How many times, I wonder,
has history laid the blame on some nothing nobody
just trying to make things right,
while the pigs and rat bastards
party in the big house
or the White House,

making a mockery
of anyone who doesn't toe the party line.

I urge the pretty people
to pay close attention
to my cautionary tale.

Anyone can be a Grode
if they step out of line.
It isn't just us ugly fuckers
who wind up
on society's reject pile.

Ornery Owl's Post-Post Thoughts

The witch at the beginning of the post has a very similar appearance to yours truly, although I stopped dyeing my prematurely graying hair blonde twenty years ago. My hair is thick and resistant to most color formulas, so I have to bleach it first. That process made it brittle. It was coming out in clumps, so one day I said “fuck it.” That moment was freeing.

I will never understand why society treats people who aren’t conventionally attractive as if we’ve committed some sort of crime that we need to be punished for. Couldn’t you just leave us alone?

Fat.
Old.
Ugly.
So what?
No, you don't have permission to use my photo to ridicule me. Go fuck yourself.

https://experiencewriting.com/2023/10/29/oct-29-prompts-halloween-party/

Imagine you are at a Halloween party in the future. What are you afraid of before you go? Imagine it’s the best Halloween party you could ever go to and nothing goes wrong, everything is the best Halloween party fun you can imagine. Write a poem describing the experience with all of your senses.

I wasn't really feeling those overly optimistic instructions, so you got the gloomy, gritty goods instead.

http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/kyriellesonnet.html

A Kyrielle Sonnet consists of 14 lines (three rhyming quatrain stanzas and a non-rhyming couplet). Just like the traditional Kyrielle poem, the Kyrielle Sonnet also has a repeating line or phrase as a refrain (usually appearing as the last line of each stanza). Each line within the Kyrielle Sonnet consists of only eight syllables. French poetry forms have a tendency to link back to the beginning of the poem, so common practice is to use the first and last line of the first quatrain as the ending couplet. This would also re-enforce the refrain within the poem. Therefore, a good rhyming scheme for a Kyrielle Sonnet would be:

AabB, ccbB, ddbB, AB -or- AbaB, cbcB, dbdB, AB.

November PAD Challenge 2022: Day 21: The Zombie Bride

Image by Çiğdem Onur from Pixabay

as the evening melancholy descends
a toxic dialogue with the Zombie Bride ensues

so I gather, says this Ghost of Girlish Wishes Past
you have been directed to failure by your belief
in the hallucination that good luck will come to you
if you hold fast to the inane dream of success
that you say has been in your bloodstream
from the time you were a baby

you believed it would be cricket
if your most delusional hopes for success descended from the skies
by the time you were thirty-five
you're nearly twenty-five years beyond thirty-five now
and still, the handsome prince has not seen fit
to ascend your stairs and sweep you off your feet

he'd pop more than a button if he tried
for by now, he's slipped beyond mature into elderly
and you are much too fat
to be carried away
by anything smaller than a dump truck

oh, do fuck off, I replied
these days I prefer pies I've baked to pie in the sky
really, they're much more tasty
now, either sit down for a slice
or piss off into the night

I've no time for you or your diatribe
I've pie to eat and stories to write
and these days I know that it's my right
to live my life free of abuse
from sanctimonious dullards like you

the Zombie Bride turned and huffed away
"don't come back," I called.
"you're not welcome to stay."
sadly, I know she won't be gone long
She's like a worn-out record playing the same tired song

these days her words don't have as much power
still, she sits waiting for the hour
when she can get back under my skin
and slowly destroy me from within
because part of me
will always believe

she's right,
I'm nothing,
and my chances have all passed me by

this will always be
my reality
until the day my spirit flies free
and maybe even long after

notes and prompts used

The zombie bride is a metaphor for the two big dreams every girl is supposed to have: be Pretty In A Certain Way and Marry a Handsome Prince.

Ornery Owl says, "fuck it, who needs that nonsense?"

Ornery Owl really believes those girlhood dreams she learned to place above all else, including her own well-being, are nonsense. The Zombie Bride haunts her house and may always do so, but Ornery has learned that such ghosts can't harm her unless she lets them under her skin.

For today's prompt, use at least three of the following six words in your poem (bonus points if you can use all six):

button
gather
hold
not
sweep
toxic

baby
bloodstream
cricket
dialogue
directed
good
hallucination
luck
stairs
thirty-five

November PAD Challenge 2022: Day 7: Adapt or Die

"Adapt or die, foolish little fool!" the intimidating alien rumbled.

I, however, refused to be shaken, no matter how he grumbled.

"Hah!" I snorted. "For something so impressive in appearance, you certainly lack cleverness.

"Anyone can see that I am far from little.

"My ass is large, and so is my middle."

"Yes, and you've had to find the key to adapting to such undesired conditions, haven't you?" the being inquired pensively.

"Your luck has not been exactly stellar, wouldn't you agree?

"What you found when you were transported over the rainbow was not what you hoped to see.

"When you shuffled off to the pier to see if your sacred ship had come in,

"Mawkish mediums informed you that your destiny was arriving at the airport too far in the distance for you to find redemption."

"Indeed, and when I asked them to elaborate, they promised to do so for a small fee equal to several of my paychecks," I replied. "I had a suspicion that they might have lied, so I decided I didn't care a shingle for their advice and proceeded to do things my way from that day forward."

"And how is that working out for you?" the alien, who now suspiciously resembled Dr. Phil, pressed.

"Probably better than the flashy fairy tale I once believed was my destiny," I sentimentally surmised, as glimmers of dreams of what might have been glittered in my eyes, overflowing down my face. "I'm pleased that I'm not surrounded by fake people to annoy me, but there have been times in my life when loneliness threatened to destroy me.

"I've discovered first-hand that no one cares how the disabled, elderly, and downtrodden fare.

"If you aren't young and you aren't pretty, nobody wants to see you anywhere.

"The liberal elite as much as the rigid right would prefer that the likes of me die and decrease the surplus population.

"Society cares only about the up-and-coming, not those nearing their destination.

"Age bias is rampant, the outsides given more weight than what lies within.

"If I were at all religious, I'd say it's a goddamn sin.

"Being a caustic agnostic, I'll just say it's a crying shame.

"Every year I hope for improvement, and every year it's always the same."

"Yet still you keep on kicking," the alien said, impressed. "I hope to meet more folk like you in my travels--ugly, angry, disabled, fat old women are the best!"

As the alien took off in his spaceship, I couldn't help but grin.

If we'd care more about what's on the inside, a better world could begin.

You mean only draft, Sunshine, because I'm just that good!

I'm off to find someplace to hide my metric butt-ton of bullshit now. Here's the link in case you can't see the player.

notes and prompts used

The prompt requests:
"For this challenge, let’s go on a wild walk together. Report on what you’ve found and the lessons you’ve learned."

While my piece did not address nature as such, it addresses the sometimes difficult lessons I've learned about myself in my nearly 60 years walking this planet. I honestly don't think I would have survived those "Hollywood dreams" I had in my youth. I'm a sensitive soul, though I seem thick-skinned.

Today's challenge asks participants to create a poem about adaption.

I almost forgot about this prompt. I'll probably play catch-up with it over the next few days. Today's suggestion is:

"Another form of being has just communicated something to you...Write down 5-10 words, to fix the moment forever in your mind then use those words to write about something else."

This prompt gave me the idea of the alien communicating with me.

Still Too Easy to be Hard (Triple Tanka)

Free use image by Alexas Fotos on Pixabay

people say they care
'bout evil and injustice
the truth is they lie
they only care for victims
who are precious in some way

those deemed unpretty
who don't look good on posters
the unwanted ones
are easily lambasted
by the ones who claim to care

I have never seen
those who claim to care so much
defend the homely
the fat, disfigured, homeless
only receive scorn

~cie~

note the notes
(high probability of becoming sweary)

The poem was, in part, inspired by lyrics of the 1969 song "Easy to be Hard" by Three Dog Night.

I had a go at Anderson Cooper after his "obese turtle" remark.

When he said that he regretted the comment, I wrote him a letter.

Anderson Cooper reasoned that he made the "obese turtle" comment in the heat of the moment. So you may think that would be my last words on the subject, but Bitches, I ain't done yet.

Anderson Cooper says that he doesn't want to be the person who made that comment, and I'll take his word for it. But I would like to ask Anderson and anyone else who has ever said something like this in the heat of the moment:

Why is your "go-to" insult in the heat of the moment a negative crack about someone's body, and why do you think that fat is the very worst thing that you can call a person?

Is it really okay to have size shaming as your default, or do you need to check yourself and ask yourself a few pertinent questions?

Why do you think that fat people deserve constant mocking and derision?

Do you think that it's doing them one damn bit of good?

Or is it possible that you learned this prejudice a long time ago and it's time to stop being horrible?

Fat jokes aren't funny.

Fat isn't the worst thing a person can be.

With every awful thing tRump has done, you're defaulting to "he's fat?"

Weak sauce!

Check yourself.

I rarely post pictures of myself for obvious reasons.
A bad selfie (there is no other kind) that I threw some Pixlr effects at.
So, let's run down the list.

  1. Old (Middle-aged, anyway)
  2. Fat
  3. Ugly
But guess what--still doesn't deserve to be bullied and ridiculed.

I live by the rule of no body-shaming.

Not even once.

Not even tRump.

I call people out when I see them body-shaming because bullying--yes, including the bullying of people you find unattractive--ruins lives.

"BuT tHeIr HeAlTh!!111!!!" is not an excuse.

You know damn good and well it's never about their health.

By the way, I really don't want to receive comments like "you're not THAT fat. Trust me, I am THAT fat. And even if I wasn't, is it okay to be horrible to people who are THAT fat?"

I don't want any "but you could lose weight if you tried" bullshit. The answer is no, I can't. I tried to hate myself thin for 33 years and it didn't work. I'm done trying to hate myself thin. And even if I could, is it really okay to be telling people to try and manipulate their bodies in an attempt to become what you consider acceptable?

Please spare me the "you have a pretty face" comments. The secondary implication with those is "it's too bad about your disgustingly fat body."

I don't really want any comments about my looks, because my looks don't matter. I'm not fishing for compliments. I want people to hear my words.

Nobody deserves to be bullied for their appearance.

Not even the bullies.

Don't stoop to their level.

Fat bitch out.

NaPoWriMo 2020 Day 15 + April PAD Challenge 2020 Day 15 + Words for Wednesday: Blue Dream

Image by Sandra Myles from Pixabay

I am your blue dream nightmare sunless sky
drawn from the depths of forgotten traumas
a thousand brisk switches leaving bloody trails
the gold within my heart not worth the trouble
aggressive word witch with a way to walk that says
stop where you are, stay the fuck away
I am not your delightful, delicate princess
not your pretty pop tart teen queen dream
hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and I
am scorn personified
I'll tear out your throat with pointed teeth
I'll rip out your heart with my bare hands
I am ground glass in your hipster latte
I am claws scraping over metal in a dark alley
I am a decaying, dirty city, ugly and gritty
I spit your name black from my mouth
I despise and disdain everything you stand for
and contrary to what you have told yourself
I wouldn't want to be like you
shallow and flighty, fading to nothing when exposed to light
blowing on the whims of any breeze that happens by
you are nothing and nobody, a Barbie doll princess
but looks fade and boys cheat and if your worth is tied up
in whether or not some creep thinks your tits are fine
and your ass is hot
then you will live your life chasing impossible perfection
botox and liposuction and spending each waking hour
obsessing on whether your ass is too fat
I am the nightmare you so fear becoming
old and fat and unwanted and pissed off as hell
I'm waiting for you around the next corner
so if you don't want to waste your life fearing becoming
what we all one way or another eventually do
concentrate on what's inside, on your soul, not your looks
on your skills and your truth and the strength of your self
youth is here today, gone tomorrow like a popular song
but the blues lives forever
real, gritty, unpretty
tarnished, unvarnished
sometimes mean as hell
taking shit from nobody
surviving with the middle finger flying high
to stupid conventions
and soulless fucks
who want to steal your thunder
'cause they've got none of their own
the blues can be your best friend
but the blues can fuck you up
the blues don't bow down to nobody
the blues don't get played for a fool
so be your own dream
not what someone else tells you
don't be a bubblegum pop tart illusion
be true to yourself
be the blues

Sincerely,
The Ornery Fucking Old Lady
Not apologizing to anybody

November PAD Chapbook Challenge: Day 11: Prime Time Pantoum

Trying to model my life
To be more like the pretty people
Starring on glitzy, prime-time TV shows
Is an exercise in futility

To be more like the pretty people
I try to hate myself into conformity
Starring on glitzy, prime-time TV shows
A destructive, soul-stealing dream

I try to hate myself into conformity

Notes:
Today's November PAD Chapbook Challenge asks participants to write a "prime" poem. I chose the phrase "prime time" and the Pantoum form.
