November PAD Challenge 2021: Party Crashers

The Queen Xenomorph initially appeared in the movie Aliens (1986)
I threw some sparkles and stars on the image

Content Warning: fantasy gore

the weather outside may be frightful
but nothing can bust up a party
quite like the discovery of a nest of xenomorphs

you may find it miserable
to be gathering beechmast while sleet is soaking through your shoes
while the only sight you wish to see is your bedstead

be sensible and bestow upon your will a ferrule of encouragement
pull up your muffler and silence contrary thoughts
that may lead you to investigating odd ruins

for though you may believe yourself to be clever like a fox
should you penetrate a xenomorph's nest
you will become an unwilling host
as the worst kind of party crasher
prepares to rock your body

The chestburster first appeared in the movie Alien (1979)

~Ornery Notes~
This poem would have been perfect for my October Helloween Poetry Bash. However, the stars were not right. I didn't have the correct prompts aligned. In any case, when you're me, every day is Helloween.

Also, I had an Aliens-related dream last night that reminded me how much I loved writing Aliens fan faction. I haven't got time for it now, but I will gladly write it again if I ever do.

If you write fan fiction, don't let anyone tell you that it isn't "real" writing. It is. A great deal of what I write might be categorized as Lovecraft fan fiction. I'm okay with that.

Prompt: The Weather

Prompt: Write a party poem

30 Days of Haiga 2021: Face Your Fear

I am not going to officially participate in the Weekly Scribblings anymore. I have gotten myself in the shit with that prompt more than once because of my distractibility, inability to follow instructions properly, and just plain mutton-headedness.

At closing in on 60 years old, it's clear that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but these days I can exercise the option to bugger off rather than sit in the corner with a dunce hat on while the teacher scolds me and the other students bask in the schadenfreude.

It's better for me to bring my goods to the Writers Pantry, where anything goes as long as it's under 369 words. I can run with scissors, not play well with others, and misinterpret rules to my shriveled little brain's content.

Number One Ghost

Free use image by blackrabbitkdj on Pixabay

spooky baby, my number one ghost
I look for you in the trees
at the botanic garden
with all the sunshine people gathering
to point a finger at the darkling thing
snickering in their stable disguises

I do a pirouette and step inside the building
seeking the department of practically perfect prose
you wink at me from the chandelier
your smile revealing hungry canine teeth
you're the real deal
not a plastic pretender in a popular elastic band

spooky baby, you're my thrill
a chill runs up my spine whenever I see you
lurking in the shadows, waiting for me
I'll let you sink your teeth into my flesh
taste the darkness in my soul
a gothic craving never grows old

I don't miss the consuming intensity
of the need that would eat me from within
I would miss the touch of velvet sin
except for the way it destroys
I miss the way my soul used to rise
whenever it heard melodic thunder

I miss the way it felt to dream
of my spooky baby
waiting on the other side

November PAD Chapbook Challenge 2019: Day 4: Night Owl

Image by Sarah Richter from Pixabay

Night owl
working all night long
night after night
far into the wee hours of the night
burning the midnight oil
burning the candle at both ends
never getting ten winks
let alone forty
night after night
going in for a night's work
running on fumes
an hour or two of sleep
"I'll sleep when I'm dead," she said
but then in the dead of night
at the witching hour
as she was walking her rounds
she saw a thing that wasn't right
any time of the day or night
the night owl that needed to call it a day
looking into the face of something
that wasn't really there
or was it?
She supposed she didn't really want to know.

~Cie~

Notes:
The prompt for the fourth day of the November PAD Chapbook Challenge was Night _____.
I wasn't sure what to write, and then I found that picture.
I worked as the night emergency contact person in a retirement community for close to ten of the eleven years that I was employed by the community. I was well-suited to night shifts because I don't sleep well at night. Then again, the whole bipolar disorder/add thing ensures that I don't sleep well at all a lot of the time. Also, working night shift jacks up a person's circadian rhythms. Plus, I had obligations during the day. Sometimes I'd work several nights in a row sleeping only an hour or two before coming back to work.
If I did this for long enough, I would start hallucinating. It was harmless things, like seeing a penguin in the hall or a seagull flying through the building. Were these things imagined, or was I looking into another world? I don't really know, but I do know that it was an indication that I really needed to sleep.

Troiku Challenge 2019: Day 1: Unexpected Guests

Image by Jody Davis from Pixabay

gathering flowers
unexpected guests
come to dinner

gathering flowers
to put on the graves
of the departed

unexpected guests
hungry ghosts here now
wanting their dinner

come to dinner
you cannot complain
you gave no warning

~Jane & Cie~

Notes:
The "sleigh" part of the Troiku was created by Jane Reichhold (1937 - 2016). The three "horses" were created by me.
For some reason, the line about gathering flowers reminded me of the spooky short story "The Hills Beyond Furcy" by Robert G. Anderson, so what followed was a story of uninvited ghosts.
I'm dedicating this poem to my pal Ghost Town Grover, who resides at the Grover Hotel where my son and I will be moving once the venerable old structure is up to code. If you'd like to follow along with our misadventures and maybe lend a little support to our efforts to renovate this historic building, visit us at the Good Stuff from Grover blog!

OctPoWriMo 2015: Day 31: The Road

The Road

We took ourselves a trip
A little expedition
Driving up into the country
To do ourselves some fishin'

An innocent excursion
A little midnight drive
A young and carefree group of friends
Feeling joyful and alive

Our trek into the back woods
Became a voyage of the damned
We were hit from behind by a tractor
Into the cornfield our car was slammed

Our weekend ride no longer
A happy pleasure jaunt
The terror of a nightmare
That cornfield rose to haunt

Our trip now a cruise to terror
The scarecrow demon said
Your journey isn't ending
Although you'll soon be dead

So now I spend each Halloween
Looming o'er the cornfield with my kind
Exploring the depths of my wickedness
As I scare travelers out of their minds

~Opal~

Note:
The OctPoWriMo crew asked us to reflect on our poetic journey this month. Sorry, but I couldn't pass up the chance to write a spooky little Halloween poem instead. We appreciate the gift you give us. Here is some candy!

Here's a little bonus treat for our Real Cie, because in fairness, the "pleasure trip" line (which I changed to pleasure jaunt) was ripped from this song. I was thinking of you, Darlin', and of the dear fellow who inspired us all so much.

I couldn't resist.
