The Diabolical Drama of Darius (With Pictures) #8Sunday

Young Darius went on a date

With a succubus seeking a mate.

In a twist of the plot

He thought her brother was hot.

"Curses! Foiled again!"

With the lady, he did not consummate.

notes

This poem can be blamed on this prompt.

Write a character poem, they said.

It will be fun, they said.

Fun for me, sure. Maybe not for the people reading it.

Let me tell you about the poem.

One of the three stories I'm working on for this year's NaNoHellMo project is set on New Year's Eve 1999. The protagonist is a young man who has a history of dating the sort of gal who works at places with names like The Classy Cabaret. Hint: the name is the only thing that's classy about this cabaret. Darius decides he needs to change his ways in the new millennium, so he finds a nice young woman on a dating website.

Darius makes two discoveries during the course of the evening.

First, his date, Briana, is a succubus.

Second, he's more attracted to her incubus brother Brian.

Apparently, this isn't an uncommon occurrence as the twins' mother, Lilith, admonishes Brian to stop stealing his sister's playthings.

I can't share any snippets from the story because:

1) It's still in the train wreck stage.

2) I'm going to submit it for potential inclusion in the Digital Love anthology from Dragon Soul Press. If they don't want it, I'll self-publish it for Valentine's Day 2024.

If you'd like to jump in the game and submit one of your stories to Dragon Soul Press, just follow the handy link. You'll need to be quick because the deadline is November 30. They are looking for stories between 3000 and 20,000 words.

This is a Lil DeVille story, so it doesn't hold back on the heat.

No, I don't use it to write my stories.

I use it to do things like create the image in this post. I also use it to create filler scenes so I can move along in a story because it drives my obsessive ADHD brain loopy to just write "Put scene here." Then I come back and rewrite the filler scene.

Fictional Blackout Haibun: The Lady At the Counter #8Sunday

Airport terminal by Szymon Fischer on Unsplash

Today's post features a portion of the first chapter of C. L. Hart's contemporary holiday romantic fantasy novelette, morphed into a blackout poem and then a fictional Haibun. Information on this story and the anthology in which it is included appears after the poem.

The Original Snippet

Read the previous snippet from this story:

The diminutive woman at the counter looked like a Christmas elf with her shimmery silver hair trimmed in a perky pixie cut. She wore a soft, light cyan sweater and had a festive red and green cap with bells perched on her head. As soon as Macario saw the apologetic look in her neon-blue eyes, he knew he was out of luck. Yet, she was his last hope of not being stuck in Nashville overnight, so he approached her.

“Miss, I really need to get to Phoenix as soon as possible,” Macario said. “If you play poker, you need to work on your expressions, because I could tell from the look on your face that you have no cars left. However, I am also confident that you will do your best to assist a traveler in need. Do you have any suggestions?”

A little more:

“I certainly do, but we’ll need to be quick,” the sprightly lady declared. “I’m going to call my brother Dom over at Snowman Railway. I’m not guaranteeing anything because a ride to Flagstaff on the Snowman Line is always very popular, especially at this time of year. However, I have a feeling we may be able to grant your wish. Hello Dom, it’s Pika. I have a passenger here who desperately needs to get to Arizona. You do? Oh, that’s splendid! When can you be here? Thank you, Dom, you really are a sugar plum! We’ll see you in fifteen.”

The little woman disconnected the call. Her expression was joyful.

“Dom will be here to escort you to the train himself,” she said. “You really are a lucky fellow, Mister…”

“Macario Bachmeier, but you can call me Mac,” Macario said, clasping the woman’s tiny hand in his. “Thank you, Miss Pika, you are a godsend! I will certainly tell your employer how helpful you were. If anyone deserves a holiday bonus, it’s you.”

About the Author:

C. L. Hart, the owner and sole employee of Naughty Netherworld Press, is spoken of in hushed tones. She is described as The Mad Scribe of the Northeastern Colorado Plains, The Terrible Old Woman, and The Author That Should Not Be.

When not penning sanity-destroying works of dystopian fiction, Lovecraftian fantasy, or old-school horror with the occasional sweet romance thrown in to upset the cosmic apple cart, Ms. Hart enjoys creating baked goods she hopes will be considered palatable.

Ms. Hart shares a home in a remote rural town of 134 souls with her adult son and three cats. Her sense of fashion is best described as Early Twenty-First Century Unmade Bed. This disabled former nurse can usually be found arguing with herself about subplots or rehabilitating eldritch horrors.

notes

Let's discuss the process and prompts used to create this epic work of literary art!

https://www.writersdigest.com/write-better-poetry/2023-november-pad-chapbook-challenge-day-5

Write a book-based poem.

What could be better than using one of my own stories?

Initially, I only intended to create a blackout poem. Then I saw that by trimming away details from the longer story, I was creating a more compact version of the same story, so I decided to go with a fictional Haibun.

I needed to create a short poem (Senryu, I guess, since it's about human nature rather than the environment or the seasons), so I consulted the trusty old Carpe Diem Haiku blog for a prompt. I'm rather pleased with the end result.

https://chevrefeuillescarpediem.blogspot.com/2012/11/carpe-diem-33-all-souls-daymummers-dance.html

I created the illustration for the poem by adding text art and effects to the base image using Pixlr. You are welcome to share the image, but please credit Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl if you do. A link back to this blog would also be appreciated.

By the way, I have no intention of debating with anyone whether this is a "proper" Haibun. I'm not the sort of poet or person who tends to follow exacting rules. While I don't really expect anyone to stir the shit at this point, there was a person who came around making much ado about nothing some five or six years ago, and I admit, it really bothered me.

At that point in time, I was still quite concerned with trying to make people like me. At this point, I couldn't give a tin shit about anyone's approval or lack thereof when it comes to me or my writing. Like this poem. Don't like this poem. I don't really give a damn. I don't intend to waste my time arguing about it.

I like to think of this poem as a C. L. Hart/Ornery Owl collaboration. Yes, they are different aspects of me. C. L. Hart is my fantasy/horror/sci-fi/weird fiction pen name and Ornery Owl is my snarky poetry persona. Nevertheless, it's a bit of an unusual circumstance when the twain meet thusly, so I say it's cause for acknowledgment.

The following videos really have nothing to do with the poem. This was just what I was listening to while I was creating it.

Crime Spree

I don't imagine pirates broke into my car, but here's a picture of a pirate.

We’ve had a bit of a crime spree in our little town.

Thieves broke into my car last week.

Just what treasures do you imagine you’ll find in a twelve-year-old, hail-damaged beater?

Several people’s outbuildings were broken into as well.

It makes me wonder how stupid some people are.

What treasures do these criminals think they’ll find in sheds belonging to people dwelling in one of the poorest towns in the state?

A town consisting mostly of disabled and elderly citizens who can’t afford to live elsewhere.

Somehow, people always find a way to further reduce my faith in humanity.

dull-edged apathy

cruelty sharp like a knife

ice blue like curdled blood

notes

https://experiencewriting.com/2023/10/18/oct-18-prompts-fear-of-the-living-dead-trespasser/

The prompt asked participants to write their poem in the language of a police report in which the burglar or attacker was supernatural.

I wasn't up to doing that.

I wrote a good old Haibun about an incident that actually happened.

I used this prompt to inspire the Senryu at the end of the Haibun.

https://chevrefeuillescarpediem.blogspot.com/2012/11/carpe-diem-39-blue.html

I'm quite sure the idiots who broke into my car were garden-variety incarnate shitheads. I think a supernatural entity would be able to determine that nothing in my car is worth a damn.

If you'd like to read about tons of super-unnatural things, plus pirates, you need to check out C. L. Hart's Lovecraftian fantasy adventure, The Quest For Captain Sammy's Treasure.

The other stories in the anthology are good too. And contain pirates, of course.

The Demiurge Laughs

By Dominique Signoret (signodom.club.fr) - Dominique Signoret (signodom.club.fr), CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1003233

What if I'm just the butt of a cosmic joke?

What if God is the cruelest bully of all,

Having a laugh as my dreams go up in smoke,

Loving to see me feeling two foot small?

Which is worse when everything is said and done;

A spiteful creator or oblivion?

A universe that's mean and arbitrary

Constructed by a deity uncaring.

notes

Here's the prompt for today's poem. I loosely interpreted the instructions.

https://experiencewriting.com/2023/10/13/oct-13-prompts-stirring-the-ashes/

The form is a Rispetto.

http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/rispetto.html

The rhyme scheme for a Rispetto is abab ccdd. It's supposed to be written in iambic tetrameter, but I have no idea how well I did with that. Most lines in the examples I saw were eleven syllables, so I think of it as Elevensies, and that gets the job done.

Now for a little ornery philosophy. Or Cthulhu Mythos geekery. Or Lovecraftian fangirling. Whatever.

Azathoth really isn't a good example of a demiurge. He's primordial chaos. Nyarlathotep is closer to a demiurge, but  this poem isn't about him because he's not, in fact, a cosmic bully. He only messes with people who are asking for it, like megalomaniac wizards or power-hungry politicians.

I wrote a poem about Nyarlathotep that I'm pretty proud of. I really dig the image I included with it too.

https://poetryofthenetherworld.blogspot.com/2021/03/sympathy-for-nyarlathotep.html

I still have more to do today, so I think I'll leave it at that. If you'd like to go further down the Demiurge's rabbit hole, here's your entrance.

"Do not ask me to choose between Tales From the Dreamlands One and Two, Owl! I will not have one without the other! Then again, The Quest for Captain Sammy's Treasure is a treasure unto itself! Of course, the short and sweet tale of Nyarlathotep's star-crossed love with Queen Nathicana always brings a briny tear to my eye. 'Tis an impossible choice!"

Shameless Self-Promotion:

If you like weird Lovecraftian fantasy with a touch of comedy and that certain je ne sais quoi, be sure to check out all the stories in the Tales From the Dreamlands series. All except The Quest for Captain Sammy's Treasure are free with Kindle Unlimited.

Nyarlathotep's Journey

This 3000-word story reveals the origins of the ancient cosmic sorceress Yadira Root, daughter of the Outer God Nyarlathotep, and Queen Nathicana of the doomed world of Zaïs. It provides a unique interpretation of Nyarlathotep, the most nuanced and intelligent of H.P. Lovecraft's Outer Gods.

Ketil and Yitzy's Adventure in the Xura Dream House

In this fix-up novella, the fate of the Cosmos rests in the hands of an unlikely team of unusual friends. Will an exiled member of an ancient extraterrestrial race, a human ghost, and two ghouls be able to outfox an ancient evil and beat Nyarlathotep at his game before time runs out? This buddy story is the first in a series of New Cthulhu Mythos cliffhangers.

The Quest For the Wizard's Key

352 pages

The Wizard's Key is the second book in a series of New Cthulhu Mythos tales. This fix-up novel features a fascinating cast of outcasts on a quest to save the Cosmos from destruction by malevolent forces. Join them on their madcap journey.

This fix-up novel follows the events that transpired in Ketil and Yitzy’s Adventure in the Xura Dream House. The book can be read as a standalone, but for a better understanding of the characters and events, it is suggested that Ketil and Yitzy’s Adventure in the Xura Dream House should be read first. It is a fun, fast-paced buddy story with plenty of creepy, crazy twists and turns.

Once you have read Ketil and Yitzy’s Adventure, you will be In the Know so you can be In with the In Crowd! Then you can join us at the Kewl Eldritch Horrors table.

The Quest for Captain Sammy's Treasure

This Lovecraftian fantasy adventure is one of the tales featured in the Pirate Gold anthology from Dragon Soul Press.

Five centuries ago, Captain Sammy buried his treasure in an unlikely location before letting the sun burn his body to ash to avoid becoming a vampire. Now the spectral pirate is back in the Jungle of Kled to reclaim his treasure, accompanied by two unusual friends.

Rilpu is a young sorceress born as a serpent but transformed into a humanoid female by a spell. The wizard Zkauba hails from the doomed world of Yaddith. They are soon joined by an impressive companion: Yadira, the daughter of Nyarlathotep. However, it is possible that even Nyarlathotep's daughter may not be able to defeat the abomination standing in the blighted clearing upon the pedestal where Captain Sammy's treasure is hidden.

Do the ghostly pirate captain and his friends have a chance of reclaiming the treasure and continuing their mission to save the Cosmos from destruction or are they destined to fail?

Wrong-Tober 2023: Revelation

Photo by George Dagerotip (dagerotip) on Unsplash

Revelation

The cards drawn in this combination could only mean one thing, but Andorra Gronchio had no idea what to do about it. The dancer cavorting across a desert wasteland, celebrating victory. A supplicant begging for mercy as flies devour her eyes. The false prophet with his self-assured smirk, beckoning followers. The high priestess beseeching the Heavens for true guidance. The Ascended One seated in lotus position on a cushion, the celestial firmament surrounding her, the eternal inferno below. Lastly, the diamond-shaped eye of darkness floating in the everlasting void from whence all things emerged and to which all things return.

I submitted this piece for potential inclusion in The Damned, but it wasn't selected. This somewhat surprised me as I think it is rather chilling.

Poetic Pandemic Preview: The Canopy Bed Digital Text Art Manipulation

The Canopy Bed Version 2

I was experiencing massive frustration in trying to get my shape poem, The Canopy Bed, to conform to Kindle Publisher's format and all fit on one page, even after I reformatted the page in Word and shrank the font. It occurred to me that I could take a screenshot of the shrunk-down version of the poem. I simply pasted the screenshot into MS Paint and saved it as a JPEG.

The poem looked a little bland all on its own, so I found an image on Pixabay. I then opened the image using Pixlr's free image editor (http://pixlr.com) and layered the poetry JPEG over the top, increasing the poem's transparency. I also added a "dust" effect that I felt enhanced the image.

I don't get squat from Pixlr for telling you about them, except for the satisfaction of sticking it to Adobe for their skeevy ways. I feel that even the free version of Pixlr is a strong competitor for Photoshop, and I don't have to pay a monthly subscription fee to use it. Having a competitive free version of their software available for broke-asses like me makes Pixlr the good guys and gals of the digital art software world, while Adobe are the sketchy, mustache-twirling villains tying broke digital artists to railroad tracks by putting evil DRM in the software that these poor souls paid big bucks for.

Planned obsolescence is a sleazy game of dirty pool and I don't like it. So, if I ever do start making money off my work, I will purchase the paid version of Pixlr, and Adobe can go lick a cactus, right alongside of Apple. My iPhone 7 decided to go tits up yesterday morning, with no warning signs such as the battery not charging as quickly or not holding a charge as long.

I had always piggy-backed the phone onto my computer with a lightning cable, and it worked fine and dandy. Sometimes if the computer went to sleep, the phone would stop charging. This is what I figured had happened when I found the phone lying on my computer desk dead this morning. No big, I thought. Now that the computer's awake, the phone will charge back up.

No dice.

I took the phone out to the car to try and give it a quick boost from the car charger, which usually wakes it up in less than a minute. It was still unresponsive. So, I brought it inside and plugged it into a wall outlet to charge. Nothing was shaking. My son took it up to his room to charge it on his wireless charger. It remained dead, so we called the time of death for the damn thing at about 12:30 PM, and I ordered a Samsung Galaxy 10 that I'll be paying off for the next two years. Except for iCloud, I've had it with Apple.

This image fits in the book, but I realized that it might be difficult for some people to make it out on their tablets, computers, or smartphones. So I decided to create a web version and include a link in the book.

The new book is called Poetic Pandemic and it is due for release in the second week of May. You can wait for the free promo announcement shortly after release, and pick up a copy then. As I always say, free is my favorite price.

In the meantime, if you haven't already grabbed your copy of my first poetry volume, Another Autumn, why not check it out now? It's only 99 cents, which is pretty close to free. Or, if you have Kindle Unlimited, you can borrow a copy.

Here is your handy link. https://amzn.to/3aExYT5

Now you can't say I never gave you anything. I have just given you a fantabulous digital picture and a link to some ornery poetry. What more could you want, except, you know, to win the lottery or something like that?

Cheers,
Your ornery old Aunt Cie

Poems in April: Day 10: In Thrall

Have you ever been in thrall
Of someone who was just so
Bad and so entirely wrong
You walk in heart wide open

Know your heart will be broken
But you can't resist the pull
Though you know that it's a lie
You can kiss your life goodbye

~Pepper Baiij for Kris Rooiakker~

Notes:
This poem has some 'splainin' to do.
First, why would I take on ANOTHER daily challenge when I'm already involved with two of them?
I could blame the bipolar disorder, but I think the truth is, I'm genuinely insane. I'm not referring to the bipolar disorder part. That's mental illness. Mental illness is not insanity. Insanity is knowing something isn't realistic and doing it anyway. I have a proven track record of insanity.
The second factor involved here is my intent to finally publish a book of my poetry at the end of the year. I don't need to worry about publishers who insist that only previously unpublished works appear. The book will be published by Team Netherworld Creations, a seedy little independent press of which I am the Head Buttmunch in Charge. I don't have such rules. With any book I publish, whether it is written by me or someone else, the author retains all rights to do whatever they want with their material at any time.
Now, about the poem.
The poetry form is Jueju. I wrote two quatrains with seven syllables in each line.
Pepper Baiij is the female protagonist in Team Netherworld's long-running WIP, Fetch. The first chapter of this tale emerged in November 2014. The work is nowhere near ready for publication, but new chapters and poems are always emerging. Maybe someday we'll actually have a finished product.
Kris Rooiakker is an actor with whom Pepper became obsessed in her younger days. He is a psychic vampire. He found Pepper on the astral plane and took advantage of her vulnerability and low self-esteem. Pepper's obsession with Kris cooled many years ago, but he doesn't like being ignored. He keeps coming back to pester her.
The prompt asked writers to grab a book and find a sentence, then:
Use all the words of this sentence in a poem
OR
Pick a word or phrase from this sentence for the title of your poem
OR
Use a part or the entirety of this sentence as the first or the last line of your poem

Now, as it happens, I had the manuscript for Carnal Invasion VI: The Dark Delights of Mistress Kali open for reference in working on the forthcoming Carnal Invasion XI: Good Sports. (I am also the Head Buttmunch in Charge of Naughty Netherworld Press, which is Team Netherworld Creations' lust-crazed sibling.) I found a sentence suitable for public consumption and used the words "in thrall" for the title of the poem and in the first line of the poem. Here is the original sentence.
“No, Jefe, she ain’t hurt, but she in thrall of La Jefa,” Krystal whispered. “You can peek in, sí, but don’t say nothin’. Like I say, we don’t wanna end up being prisoners.”
