April PAD Challenge + NaPoWriMo 2024 Day 22

Good morning (or whatever it is where you are) Poetry People. I dragged my worthless ass out of bed at 5:40 AM, took my pills, stabbed myself (with an insulin pen), put drops in my eyes, and came back to my computer to write one of those brief, hard-hitting Haiku about how the human race selfishly harms the world that gave us life.

We need to stop behaving like a cancer. One person may not be able to make much of an impact, but together we can make real changes. One of the most important things we can do is hold corporations accountable for their actions.

To construct my take-no-prisoners Haiku, I took inspiration from the following prompts.

Write an Earth poem.

write a poem in which two things have a fight.

We are in the fight of our lives against the very world that gave us life. If the world is to survive, we need to be on its side. We must listen to the Earth and hear what it is telling us. We must work to heal it rather than doing further harm.

A million thanks to Brendan from Earthweal for providing and explaining the term atmospheric rivers. His post is well worth the read.

Black Ink Howl: Fighting for Balance

Black Ink Howl: Fighting for Balance:   Mother Earth clings to the throat of a chinaberry praying she has enough hope to escape the malevolence of humans.   Forced into a dying c...

Greed is a form of stupidity, and many humans are terribly greedy. The Earth pays the price. A powerful poem.

30 Days of Haiga 2022: Cleaning Our Rivers

cleaning our rivers
the only possible choice
for a better life

I used the following prompts and image in creating this work:

You are welcome to share the Haiga on your blog or use it as an image in an article or self-published book as long as you credit Cara Hartley/Ornery Owl and provide a link back to this blog.

I'm planning to gather the Haiga I create this month into a new poetry collection and also sell them as refrigerator magnets/postcards on Deviant Art. Unfortunately, I have to wait until I get Ye Olde Disability Payment to sell them on Deviant Art because they now require a paid membership to sell stuff through them. Sigh. Everybody wants a piece of my pie and I ain't got enough pie for everybody.

Carpe Diem #1777: A Fusion of Seasons

cricket silence
between scraping sounds
autumn begins

it touches the line
of my fishing pole -
this summer moon

summer fishing done
as the crickets fall silent
autumn now begins

summer fishing done
we must prepare for winter
weather is too warm

as the crickets fall silent
will they return in the spring
species fall extinct

autumn now begins
the season that I love best
should not be so warm

~Cie~

Notes:
We were asked to create a fusion Haiku from the first two poems and then create a Troiku from the fusion Haiku. The Three Horses of the Apocalypse led my sleigh to weather that is unseasonably hot and dry. It should not be close to 80 degrees in Colorado in November. So I got all environmentally conscious on everyone and turned my Troiku to a Senryu, because that's the kind of thing I do.

Tan Renga Challenge 2019: Day 4: Ocean Sanctuary

sunday morning
all the waves in white
kneeling on the beach
As if wanting to stop time
Pray for no more destruction

Jane & Cie

Notes:
The Hokku (Haiku stanza) of this Tan Renga was written By Jane Reichhold. The Ageku (closing stanza) was written by me.
This planet's oceans are in trouble. They have been badly polluted and overfished. Many coral reefs are sick and dying.
A lot of work needs to be done to restore the health of the oceans. We can each do a small part by not littering the beaches or throwing waste into the waters, and, for those of us who eat fish, we can try and make sure that our fish comes from companies committed to sustainable harvesting practices.
