Condensed Poetry remix

Image by Azam Ishaq from Pixabay

rushing back to springtime days.

in a familiar setting

thankful I'm still here.

a mystery left behind

frozen and disconcerted

must face the winter.

trying to refresh

cold weather sets in.

stones of green

In a twist of the plot.

cold winds blowing from the north

for such small creatures

celebrate the tiny triumphs and hold on.

Celebrate the tiny triumphs and hold on.

For such small creatures

Cold winds blowing from the north

in a twist of the plot,

stones of green

cold weather sets in

trying to refresh--

must face the winter.

frozen and disconcerted

a mystery left behind

thankful I'm still here

in a familiar setting

rushing back to springtime days.

notes

I took the common lines from my two remix poem to make this.

Our brand new furnace isn't working, the technician won't return my calls, and I'm feeling very emotionally dysregulated.

Becoming (Poetic Remix)

Image by Florian Berger from Pixabay

becoming a star

become your true self.

seize each opportunity

rushing back to springtime days.

land of eternal summer

in a familiar setting

thankful I'm still here.

a mystery left behind

frozen and disconcerted

must face the winter.

seeking clarity

trying to refresh

cold weather sets in.

stones of green

heart like a still-life painting.

the luck of the draw

search for the fountain of youth.

days growing shorter

In a twist of the plot.

cold winds blowing from the north

small changes are best

for such small creatures

I celebrate the tiny triumphs and hold on.

when we show kindness

we bring relief to others

healing our own souls.

I always remember those Christmas scenes

summed up in four words

as old as me:

payments of magic money.

Poetic Recipe for Catastrophe

after Halloween

the fright fest continues on

when money is owed;

Story of my damn life.

my stuffed animals deserve better,

maybe I do too.

a lack of money

is the root of much stress.

I'll sing the Down Payment Blues with my man Bon

and Poor Boy with the Box of Frogs gang.

My voice may never make me a dime

but I've decided

I'm gonna use it anyway.

I catch glimpses of childhood in my dreams,

I was worried every day.

The anxiety doesn't go away

Just because you turn eighteen

or twenty-one

or sixty-four.

There's no lady at the counter

to offer me a ride on the Snowman Line

in my time of need.

I'm breaking all the rules of poetry

but I don't give a damn.

I'm gonna write this mess around

just have a little fun for once

not care what anybody thinks.

Better not walk into the blizzard

even when you're buried in debt.

Celebrate the tiny triumphs and hold on.

For such small creatures

we are very destructive.

Don't set yourself up to fail

when the New Year comes calling.

Cold winds blowing from the north

in a twist of the plot,

a halo around the moon,

impossible dream.

One made a hero today

Becomes a pariah the next--

dark disappointment.

the first thought is stones of green

when cold weather sets in

trying to refresh--

lost in indecisive mists

even the sweet rose

must face the winter.

frozen and disconcerted

a mystery left behind

thankful I'm still here

in a familiar setting.

the cold air cuts to my bones

in this big old winter house.

if I could return

rushing back to springtime days,

lead a quiet life

rise above limitations,

upon my last night

I will take flight into space.

notes

Write a custom poem.

This prompt came on the 19th, but because I do a poetry remix every year, I decided to save it for the end. This competition always comes with a poetry rewrite too, so this year I'm going to do the remix and then turn the remix on its head. The result will either be poetry blended to perfection or a hot mess!

November PAD Challenge 2022 Poem Remix

Let's get poppin' on this remix with Big Prairie Poppa

no way in hell this stupid poem makes the cut
to honor those who have passed
I will cultivate this orchard of my imagination now
While there's still a little time

that the basis for our bond is trauma
presages floods of drama

to unleash this perilous energy
hoping to cry victory
in a war no one can win
is the definition of madness

who should we sacrifice
to uphold our hallowed principles du jour?
The liberal elite as much as the rigid right would prefer that the likes of me die and decrease the surplus population.
Society cares only about the up-and-coming, not those nearing their destination.

If I were at all religious, I'd say it's a goddamn sin.
Being a caustic agnostic, I'll just say it's a crying shame.
Every year I hope for improvement, and every year it's always the same.

so many have tried to retool me
I won't play along coolly
you will not rule me
I'll pull me
free

directionless me
spinning twilight I wander
without any guide

the world's supposed caretakers
try to hire rainmakers
after blaming climate change on Tom, Dick, and Harry

like a strawberry left on the vine
your essence shrivels with time
trapped in the rectangle confines
of the room where you rest restlessly

you were born distorted
in the distant past
you will die broken and alone
in days of the future passed

the seamstress takes the patches
she pieces them together
new thoughts I can imagine
old pain I can put to rest

I'll write what tickles my fancy
although the panel may deem it too chancy

the music couldn't set her free
what she dreamed can never be
she puts her words in the world anyway

is she too stupid to realize
she's nothing in anyone's eyes
nonetheless, she has something to say

imagination
cooking up the strangest scenes
a funny machine

is not the conflict truly
between Narcissus and himself?
as the evening melancholy descends
a toxic dialogue with the Zombie Bride ensues

I ran from my mistakes once more
just like I always do
I wasn't cut out to be a gambler

"So what did you do today, Failed Daughter?"
"I quit my job at the casino."

I wonder if society will ever
if only for a moment
give a damn about the words spoken by a woman
rather than obsessing about the size of her chest
which could be concave for all it matters

outside
my window
I imagine
a particular tree
it grows in a land
beyond imagination
in a land where impossible
dreams come true

The way that I see it
I shouldn't dream it, but be it
Imagination will set me free

I wonder where my soul will go on the day my ashes scatter
Will I be off on a new adventure, or will it just not matter?

ashes to ashes
does something precious remain
the day the end comes?

~Ornery Owl Has Remixed It~

Professor Ornery Owl Sez:
I hope you have enjoyed this year's poetry exhibition. Keep dreaming your dreams, scheming your schemes, and writing your writes. Live the life you want and need, not the life someone else tells you to lead.

notes and prompts used

Just this one.

Write a remix of this month's poems. I always save this prompt until all the other poems, or posems, have been written.

Poemses, Precioussssss!

Today's Playlist

That's right, it's the time of year when the cranky old owl cranks up the festive tunes. You don't have to listen to them if you don't want to. I may be an obnoxious jerk in my own right, but I'm not the kind of obnoxious jerk who puts my music on autoplay. I hate it when you navigate to a page and have sound blaring at you automatically. Just--no! I don't even care if it's a page for a band. It's a total turn-off. Let me pick when I play.

Anyway, I love all of you, but not that way, and I wish you happy holidays, however you may celebrate them or not. A happy Xmahanukwanzyule to all and to all a good fright!

November 2021 Remix: Spiraling

Image by Spencer Byles on One Big Photo

Dear Me as I Used to Be, just wanting to experience all the colors life offers

Buckle up, Soul, and get ready

To careen down to yon planet and inflict your incendiary presence

as fall leaves fall

in this season of contemplation

I reflect on summer's fading song

be sensible and bestow upon your will a ferrule of encouragement

pull up your muffler and silence contrary thoughts

that may lead you to investigating odd ruins

sometimes I dare dream

that someday we will accept

people as they are

I commit myself to following the motivating recipe as closely as possible

my song for autumn

singing the health of your soul

in a society whose members value Christmas shopping over taking care of each other

humans have

no love

for anything we have deemed lesser

sometimes I sit alone and consider

family expeditions of spent years

I remember her

thirteen moons times seventeen

I know better now

from inside my bubble, or maybe from outside yours

I inscribed your name in the book of delights

I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in and found myself in a mess once again.

it must be your intention to become great

you must believe in and aspire to a surplus

step it up, speed up, hurry up and wait

It is still within our power to change the end of our tales

We don’t want to do anything that would inconvenience us

Mystic mall cops and maroon feather dusters

Time does not crawl, it hurtles forth like a bullet train

Crushing my memories beneath its merciless wheels

It took loved ones and ideas from me without a backward glance

But if I could find a filament of the hopefulness I felt

Perhaps I could sew patches over the holes in my heart

Maybe I could recall the feeling of the third Thursday in November

Pretend that tomorrow will just begin new.

New novel styles sweep us into the now.

Now everything we built lies covered in ashes.

Ashes of things that now seem unimportant somehow.

how would you bake pecan pie

good enough for compliments?

Lost and blue without a friend

humans, greedy and stupid

think with their stomachs

I hope that you know

I'm always glad to see you

beneath the sea of ubiquitous pretty faces

and impossibly slender bodies

courtesy of cocaine and starvation

I can still remember childhood thanksgivings

rising fresh in the morning full of hope

climbing from wrinkled sheets, up for breakfast

break the yolk of the egg to mop up with toast

the bird escaped clean

There are those who proclaim that I should be grateful

For my opportunity to star in the theatre of pain

running out of time as the money drips in and the reserves dry up

there is still no triumph as I trot through pelting dust to my grave

To the untrained eye

Some might find it a bit absurd

when I think back on the things that were

something blue glistens in my moss-rather-than-emerald eyes

how much longer can mother earth bend

before the bough breaks

and her children come crashing down?

Poems of Spring 2021 Remix

Image by David Bruyland from Pixabay

when you look at this rumpled old thing
just what is it that you see?
shall we plant a fence of trees
that will outlive you and me?

the miscreant heir who plays bass at purple twilight
Mad melodies marauding through my mind
Make me want to defy reality
How can I lift myself above this insanity?

dark havens for Stepford girls
mold and shape little women
made delicate like china
staring, pitying, patronizing

I didn't break you
although I cannot mend you
I will support you
if you will allow me to

Dear Cosmic Chef,
Was it fair of you to make me a mind
that loves cooking up big dreams
but has no freedom to fulfill them?

In retrospect, I can see
why you thought Hollywood was wrong for my tastes.
But why didn't you see fit to give me even a morsel of talent?
Or even the smallest sprinkling of pizazz?

I could accept the fact
that only the most half-baked mind
could envision me as erotic.

But giving me the appearance
of a blob of gritty icing
atop a melted ice cream cake
left sitting in the sun?

I won't stand for it, and I demand a refund.

waiting for the process server sucks
From where I'm sitting
There are doves and sparrows in the tree outside my window
Plotting to take a dump on my car

six-time loser down on her luck
at least this afternoon
we'll be able to hit the food bank

Would you believe that I am trying to be more like Pooh?
That willy-nilly silly old bear is my real hero.
Because he’s good-natured even when he’s bothered.

Every year one more piece of the past
Floats away on the winding river of time
many years have passed since I last visited a temple
or took a walk anywhere I felt at peace

Everything has changed so much in my old town
When my mother is gone, I will visit there no more
It brings back too many painful memories
Even with the passing of years, some wounds never heal

I don't hear too much from the birds outside my window
they fly to and fro, perching soundlessly
I slowly knit a headband and a scarf
from multicolored yarn, gold and red like autumn

I look at the birds outside my window
when my cats are gone, I will have no more
my heart is still an open wound from those lost before
night will fall regardless of what happens

love is a rat
caught in a trap
I clung onto his arm like a tattoo design
feared his desire would flicker like a dying flame

pressure to maintain impossible perfection
always drove me to hate my flawed self even more
he only saw women as collapsible dolls
why the hell did it take me so long to say no?

The first rain of the season was Thursday
Both the left and right are off their rocker
It's a sick, sad world
believe me or don't

November PAD Chapbook Challenge Poetry Remix

Free use image by Istvangyal on Pixabay

what entered the world
on a dismal night while making a casserole
in dreams you held me
there is no calm in the eye of this hurricane

cruel jest the match
realized too late
I thought it was you
it was November 3

I had one last chance
people say they care

every day I think of you
spooky baby, my number one ghost
where there is no light
what good does it do me to toil and plough?
just a memory

you ask, how are you coping?
I used to be nice
the seagull is a baffling bird
scrutinizing all

it's hard to ever save enough
when the target keeps on moving
tell me just what you think I have to do

eighteen-pound turkey
courtesy of the food bank

when we are obsessed
I wish that it was possible
I exaggerated my capacity
although I have learned how to flex

lonely day to day

Write a remix poem

This is one of my favorite poetry exercises.
I took one line from every poem I wrote over the past 30 days.
Surprisingly, the result is not complete nonsense.
