April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022: This Is The End

Image by Colleen ODell from Pixabay

The day has arrived. No music again as I received some bad news medically speaking yesterday and my tiny withered pea brain can't process both music and writing poetry today.

Moving On

Prompts Used

Write a cento. A cento is a poem that uses lines from other poems.

Write a remix poem.

Write a moving on poem.

Well, I have to say, this is pretty swell. NaPoWriMo calls it a Cento. Writers Digest calls it a remix poem and asks for a moving on poem. Give me a few minutes, and I'll call this fucker Done. I'll give it a quick edit and toss it over to The Temz Review so they can reject it and I can get about self-publishing it.

I just submitted my chapbook to The Temz Review at 5:30 MST.

Stick a fork in this sucker, it's done!

April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 29

Image by Hans Braxmeier from Pixabay

Here's the image I chose to make a Haiga from my Blue Senryu, The Last Worst Thing. The Haiga image won't appear in the chapbook manuscript, only the Senryu

No music again today. I'm still a bit shaky after my excursion to the dentist yesterday. I find dental work traumatic. I think I'll compose an essay for the Women on Writing Creative Nonfiction Essay Contest featuring my thoughts on that topic.

I've entered this contest several times and have yet to place. Maybe I'm not woman enough or maybe my essays aren't essay enough. Meh. Whatever.

The Last Worst Thing

And here’s our prompt (optional, as always). In certain versions of the classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty, various fairies or witches are invited to a princess’s christening, and bring her gifts. One fairy/witch, however, is not invited, and in revenge for the insult, lays a curse on the princess. Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem in which you muse on the gifts you received at birth — whether they are actual presents, like a teddy bear, or talents – like a good singing voice – or circumstances – like a kind older brother, as well as a “curse” you’ve lived with (your grandmother’s insistence on giving you a new and completely creepy porcelain doll for every birthday, a bad singing voice, etc.).

Write a "The Last Blank" poem.

I combined the prompts and wrote a blue Senryu of which I'm quite proud. I'm sure nobody else will like it. That's always the way with the things I write. The ones I like best are the ones everyone else hates.

I'm off to make my Haiga now.

April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 28

The image above is what I'll be using to create my concrete poem or just illustrated poem entitled glaucoma. I'm crap at making concrete poems. I can make a diamond, an hourglass, or a vortex. I can be a little more creative if I'm using pencil and paper and I have a lot of erasers.

I have glaucoma and the last time I went to the specialist my optic nerve pressure was high even though I'm using the drops. We increased the drops to twice a day. I go tomorrow for a recheck. If the pressure is still high, I'll have to have surgery, and I'm not excited about that prospect.

Glaucoma Sucks

prompts used

Write a concrete poem

write a sight poem

No music today. I was unable to go to the dentist for close to 10 years. I suppose I got lucky in only having five small cavities on the lower level. I have a tendency for food to get trapped between my lower teeth and I end up with small cavities between the teeth or at the gum level. I hate having my teeth worked on so I'm wound up pretty tight and music would only make it worse.

Also, I have the feeling that I've made people mad at me again without meaning to. I guess there are people who deliberately like to provoke others, but I'm not one of them. This has been my biggest problem with having ADHD. I've always been misunderstood because things that make sense to me with my spider on LSD thought patterns don't make sense to other people and they think I'm deliberately being contrary or an asshole, but I'm not. Then I go and hide for a while and people accuse me of being lazy or a flake. It's a never-ending story that really sucks ass.

April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 27

Image by Wolfgang Eckert from Pixabay

I'm a mess this morning, People. I woke up to a nasty charley horse in my right calf. It's that time of year when I don't need the furnace on during the day but I do at night because the temperatures drop and when the house is cold, I suffer from muscle cramps.

I lived in a dilapidated mobile home with no heat for many years. It was miserably hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. I lived paycheck to paycheck and couldn't afford to get the furnace fixed. There is a pervasive attitude that some people "deserve" to live in such conditions--or worse--and the fact that people can think that way stymies me.

Robert Lee Brewer, architect of the April and November PAD challenges at Writers
Digest, has issued the poetry remix challenge, but I'm going to table that until April 30 and make the remix the last poem in my chapbook manuscript.

There are three days left before we stick a fork in this sucker. Let's get going.

Not the Syrupy Kind

Prompts used

Write a duplex poem.

A duplex poem consists of seven, two-line stanzas. The second line of the first stanza is echoed by (but not identical to) the first line of the second stanza, the second line of the second stanza is echoed by (but not identical to) the first line of the third stanza, and so on. The last line of the poem is the same as the first.

write a love or anti-love poem

I wrote about the kind of love that can save the world. Forget that moon-June-tune nonsense. The world needs altruistic love, charitable love. The world needs tolerance. I often think that tolerance is a more vital quality than absolute acceptance. No human will find every person's way of life acceptable, but we need to tolerate even those whose ideas we disagree with.

Hence, I may find tRump supporters odious, but it is unacceptable for me to burn down their house or even vandalize their oversize truck covered in tRump 2024 stickers and flying two big tRump flags in the back. In order to maintain peace in my community, I need to coexist with these people even if I loathe their ideology.

Things are too violent these days
We need to remember that peace is the way.

April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 25/26

The gal in the cover thumbnail for today's soundtrack is going surfing. I've only been to the ocean once, and that was 41 years ago. I never learned how to surf, but I developed an admiration not only for anyone who can surf but also for people who can keep their swimsuit bottoms up.

I learned quickly that it was best for me to wear a one-piece when I rose from the ocean with sand in my drawers and my bikini bottom dropped, exposing my bottom to amused beachgoers. Never mind that horror show, let's double-dip into today's prompts.

My Own Aisling

Prompts used

Write a response poem.

The answer is in the title and the first two lines of the poem.

Write an aisling. An Aisling is an Irish poem that recounts a dream or vision featuring a woman who represents the land or country where the poet lives.

Vaudeville Reincarnated

prompts used

Write a poem using an epic simile. My simile involves a comparison between the birds that congregate in the tree outside my window and Vaudeville performers.

The prompt asks for a Haibun alluding to bird songs or a favorite songbird.

The April PAD Challenge prompt wasn't ready yet, so I'll have to crunch the prompts for the 26th and 27th tomorrow.

Once again, there is no rest for the wicked. I need to work on my story for The First Line, and I need to visit the other participants in the WEP Challenge. But first, I need something to eat. Later!

April PAD Chalenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 24

Hello Poetry People! The second night of the sleep study went much more smoothly than the first. I didn't sleep as peacefully as this cat and I certainly didn't look as cute, but I was able to get a decent six hours of sleep interrupted only by my usual 4 AM foray to the bathroom and morning medication routine.

I have some suggestions in case any of you ever have the joy of doing a sleep study like the one I did.

The first night I was wearing a tank top and the monitor belt started cutting into my armpits. Last night I wore a light t-shirt and avoided that problem.

Be very careful with the cord leading from the monitor to the pulse oximeter. I accidentally knelt on the first one while getting into bed and it was a pain in the ass to reattach. I was very mindful of the cord to the pulse oximeter last night.

Unlike the heart monitor and the pulse oximeter, the cannula contains no specific electronics. There were two cannulas. The one I wore on the first night was extremely uncomfortable. The one I used last night was much less obtrusive. Had I known of the cannulas having the possibility of fitting differently, I would have tried both of them and used the one that fit comfortably on both nights.

Enough about the sleep study. Let's get to today's poetry prompts.

Hard-Boiled

Prompts Used

write a poem in which you describe something with a hard-boiled simile.

The poem begins with the line "As lonely as a lost world buried by time and dust." I stole the "buried by time and dust" bit from the song of the same name released by the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem. The lyrics were written by the late Per Yngve Ohlin, the Swedish vocalist who was Mayhem's frontman from 1988 to 1991. He committed suicide in 1991. His lyrics focused on depressive and occult subject matter.

The song appears on the band's Live in Leipzig album with Ohlin on vocals. It was recorded in November 1990 but not released until 1993. The song also appears on Mayhem's 1994 album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas with Hungarian vocalist Atilla Csihar.

write a superhero or supervillain poem

prompt word term

Prompt: black, white, and remnants of gray

That's going to do it for now. I've got a lot to work to do today. As I always say, no rest for the wicked. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'll be glad when this year's April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo wraps.

Snippet: A Hard Rain #8Sunday #CharitySunday #SnipSun #MFRWHooks

The following is a snippet from my recent WEP Challenge project. I have not published it anywhere but on this site. However, it is doomed to eventual inclusion in one of my unspeakable volumes of poetry and prose.

Genre: Nonfiction, Personal Essay

I have lived in dry climates all my life. Where most people use rain as a euphemism for gloom, to me rain always represented hope. I was always happy-ish when it rained.

It was hot during the first part of September 2013. To quote the Boulder Daily Camera, “the talk on the street the first full weekend of September was about the heat. Boulder tied a record for the date with 93 degrees that Sunday.”

I was living in a mobile home park in Lafayette, Colorado, and working the night shift as a resident assistant in a retirement community with independent apartments, an assisted living center, and a long-term care center. I liked working the night shift. If things were quiet, following my rounds through the halls of the apartments, I had ample time to complete my clerical tasks and then work on my own projects. Or play games.

Follow the link if you'd like to read the remainder of the 1000-word essay.

In honor of completing this year's Camp NaNoWriMo project, I will donate a dollar for every comment received on this post to NaNoWriMo.

In my Make It Happen Thursday post, I contrasted my love for Camp NaNoWriMo with my loathing for regular NaNoWriMo.

Here are the highlights from that fevered foray into madness.

Camp NaNoWriMo and regular NaNoWriMo are like two sides of the same coin. The Camp NaNoWriMo side is shiny, pleasant, and encouraging. It plays uplifting music whenever it comes up in a toss while beautiful birds fly through the air carrying a brightly colored banner proclaiming YOU CAN DO THIS, WINNER!

The regular NaNoWriMo side of the coin was minted in the depths of Mount Doom from shards of broken glass, rusty nails, and used razor blades, and carries with it the sensation of being forced to do horrible homework in hell while being whacked across the knuckles at varying intervals by a demon nun wielding a spiked ruler. It plays the screeching sound of nails on a chalkboard turned up to 11 every time it comes up in a toss.

I also discuss my return to writing erotica.

I will be pleased to wrap this poetry manuscript up. The April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo, September's Haiga/Poetry Illustration Challenge which I inflict on myself annually, OctPoWriMo in October (duh), and the November PAD Chapbook Challenge/NaNoHellMo really wring me out. Each of those sessions leaves me feeling like it's time to throw in the towel, but there's no rest for the wicked. I also need to complete a 5000-ish word story for The First Line by the end of this month. I forgot about it, so it's time to get crackin'.

You have until the end of this month to sign up for my newsletter if you'd like to receive a free copy of my first poetry volume, Another Autumn. I'm planning some cool changes to the newsletter format this year, so don't miss out!
