April PAD Chalenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 24

Hello Poetry People! The second night of the sleep study went much more smoothly than the first. I didn't sleep as peacefully as this cat and I certainly didn't look as cute, but I was able to get a decent six hours of sleep interrupted only by my usual 4 AM foray to the bathroom and morning medication routine.

I have some suggestions in case any of you ever have the joy of doing a sleep study like the one I did.

The first night I was wearing a tank top and the monitor belt started cutting into my armpits. Last night I wore a light t-shirt and avoided that problem.

Be very careful with the cord leading from the monitor to the pulse oximeter. I accidentally knelt on the first one while getting into bed and it was a pain in the ass to reattach. I was very mindful of the cord to the pulse oximeter last night.

Unlike the heart monitor and the pulse oximeter, the cannula contains no specific electronics. There were two cannulas. The one I wore on the first night was extremely uncomfortable. The one I used last night was much less obtrusive. Had I known of the cannulas having the possibility of fitting differently, I would have tried both of them and used the one that fit comfortably on both nights.

Enough about the sleep study. Let's get to today's poetry prompts.

Hard-Boiled

Prompts Used

write a poem in which you describe something with a hard-boiled simile.

The poem begins with the line "As lonely as a lost world buried by time and dust." I stole the "buried by time and dust" bit from the song of the same name released by the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem. The lyrics were written by the late Per Yngve Ohlin, the Swedish vocalist who was Mayhem's frontman from 1988 to 1991. He committed suicide in 1991. His lyrics focused on depressive and occult subject matter.

The song appears on the band's Live in Leipzig album with Ohlin on vocals. It was recorded in November 1990 but not released until 1993. The song also appears on Mayhem's 1994 album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas with Hungarian vocalist Atilla Csihar.

write a superhero or supervillain poem

prompt word term

Prompt: black, white, and remnants of gray

That's going to do it for now. I've got a lot to work to do today. As I always say, no rest for the wicked. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'll be glad when this year's April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo wraps.

April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 22/23

I intended to publish this post yesterday but ended up being very busy. Then I had to wear a pulse oximeter in the evening as part of a sleep study so I couldn't type. I have one more night of this beastly sleep study and I'll be glad to send that cyborg rig back. The heart rate monitor belt started cutting into my armpits, the pulse oximeter was inconvenient and I kept pulling its cord out of the monitor, and the prongs of the nasal cannula for the apnea test were so long it felt like they were there to locate my brain through my nose. Never mind all that, let's get to the prompts.

Yesterday's poem was called Paleontology 3319, and it was about future scientists discovering an extinct species: frogs. Climate change is causing problems for frog populations.

Prompts used

Write a poem featuring repetition

Write an organism poem

Write a riddle poem

Now for today's prompts. Why don't we give DJ Fernando Ferreyra a listen while I gather these?

Sleepless in Grover

Prompts Used

Prompt: write a short, sharp poem.

I wrote a limerick about the discomfort experienced from the heart rate monitor, apnea sensor, and pulse oximeter I had to wear for an in-home sleep study.

Write a conspiracy poem.

My limerick closed with the line "a conspiracy to prevent sleeping."

Great music in this one, but the aesthetic appears to be all butt all the time. Hence the video gets pushed to the bottom of the post.

"Did you have to do the miserable sleep study too, Harry?"
"That was a sleep study? I thought it was a new form of torture devised by Voldemort."

April PAD Challenge/NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 15

Good morning, Poetry People. It's too early, but I woke from a terrible dream at 3 AM, and since I'd end up in the ER if I called up my old pal Jack Daniels and his partner Jimmy Beam, I decided I'd go down to the sea with my old friend Debussy instead. Never mind all that, let's get started.

This post goes on a bit of a downward spiral at the end, so you may just want to hit it to see the prompts I used and then quit it. In fact, this is the strategy that I advise.

Uninfluenced

Write a poem about something in which you have absolutely no interest.

I have absolutely no interest in so-called "influencers." I couldn't give a flea fart in an F5 tornado what these self-absorbed prats have to say.

Write a patience poem.

I wrote an anti-patience poem about my lack of patience with self-proclaimed "influencers."

I wonder what has been influencing these very lifelike but thankfully unrealistic dreams I've been having lately. I suppose it's down to stress like it always was. I feel like part of me is being destroyed from within and changed into something cold, dead, and sociopathic, and I'm projecting that feeling onto the image of the person who is closest to me.

I know this makes no sense and I wish I could talk about it with the person I used to discuss dreams with, but they have too much else going on in their life and no time for my mushy-headed bullshit. I imagine that feeling utterly alone, adrift, and misunderstood isn't doing my crap subconscious much good.

For the love of all that may be holy, don't bleat out the old "but mental health professional" bullshit. Those fuckers never helped me a damn bit, plus I live 50 miles from any city, and fuck a whole lot of that shit. I need a friend and preferably one who is open-minded to the metaphysical, not a psychoanalyst. I understand enough about psychology where I can figure that shit out on my own.

I don't trust easily, and I'm really not looking for anyone to "solve" my problems. Really, I'm simply overthinking things and don't have anyone to help me deflect my pain. Boo fucking hoo, it's not like I'm the last friendless person in the Universe. It's a tale as old as time. I don't need no doctor and I don't want no drugs. I just want to get the last bit of that lousy dream out of my system so I can get back to sleep.

Maybe my old friend Claude can play me a reverie so I can sail back to the Land of Nod and go fishing for better dreams.
