Butterflies are Messengers
For they bring me
Memories of my childhood in New Mexico
Of our rundown house
Of blistering hot summer days
Of our huge half acre property
Of skinks and horned toads
Of bees both honey and bumble
Of fire ants
Of chickens
Of my father
Gone three years at the end of this November
One by one his memories were stolen from him
In the years leading to his eventual demise
They flew away like butterflies in the sunlight
Leaving his mind in a fear-filled darkness
At his memorial service in May
The month he was born
A butterfly flew over his stone
Then off into the distance
I hope that at that moment he remembered
That his daughter always loved butterflies.

I lost my dad 2005 and feel your loss with you. A heart felt poem. X
ReplyDeleteThis brought me tears.
ReplyDeleteThis one takes me back to my childhood. The bliss of growing up in a small town :)
ReplyDeleteI was moved by the descriptive writing of your home which seemed to be your dad.
ReplyDeleteSo lovely. :D
ReplyDeleteWow, this really got to me. It's a beautiful poem, and speaks to me emphatically.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your kind words.
ReplyDeleteSunita, I guess this does sound like small town/rural life. It was actually Albuquerque, New Mexico in a part of the city that allowed livestock! I don't know if it still does. This was the mid 1970's.
That was beautiful, Cheese. Surely Uncle must know on some level how you're feeling and must appreciate your love.
