The First Fool

Guess I'm not the first fool to spin on my axel
Mad as a hatter over you
I can't help but magnify your glory
The hold you have on my heart feels like a vise

Yes, I let you trespass in my head
Take over my mind like an opium addiction
Blow out my brain with one sensual gesture
Terrorize me with your wicked caprice
I tell myself I need to remain elastic

By myself flooded with a cascade of desire
Staying home waiting for your call for months
I can taste the sweetness of you on my palate
How can I live without you any longer?
Hoping today you'll finally notice
Hating myself for loving you

Mad melodies marauding through my mind
Make me want to defy reality
How can I lift myself above this insanity?
All I want to do is fly to you
I need you now, don't make me wait forever

Bleeding my heart out trying to figure
Some way to sow the seeds of love in your soul
I wish I was worthy to dine at your table
How can I rise to your level when I'm so far below?
How can I put my name on the tip of your tongue?
How can I make your gorgeous voice sigh that you feel the same way as I?

This prompt challenges you to find a poem, and then write a new poem that has the shape of the original, and in which every line starts with the first letter of the corresponding line in the original poem.

Well...

I didn't use a poem, I used a song: Hopelessly Devoted To You by Olivia Newton-John. I used the first letter of every line, but beyond that, I took a whole lot of liberties.

At Purple Twilight

Write an "active" poem.
It may not be active in an obvious way, but the (alien) world described in this Senryu is alive and active.

Today's prompt asked us to choose a photograph shared by the Space Liminal Bot. (http://twitter.com/SpaceLiminalBot). I chose the image above.

Today's piece fits in nicely with an overhaul that I'm doing on a story written by my sixteen-year-old self. I know I could say "written by me at sixteen," but although we share the same soul and her experiences shaped me, looking back on the person I was at sixteen is like looking at an entirely different person. I know now that this disconnect and my tendency to dislike myself stems from the trauma that I've endured throughout my life.

This is one reason that I tend to get defensive when people react with horrified surprise to my revelations regarding my relationship with myself. You don't experience life the way I do or have the same struggles with yourself that I do? Great. But don't go acting like I'm bad or defective for feeling as I do, or having experienced life the way I have. How would you like it if someone did that to you?

Imma dedicate this poem to Prince because he loved purple and because he was kind of an alien, but he made it work. I'm still working on the "make it work" part.

Day 3: Write a communication poem.
This poem communicates...something.

The prompt was to make a deck of cards with words on them and choose one.
I didn't do that.

Never let it be said that I'm incapable of following directions.
I used all the homophones from this prompt.

Trees of Tomorrow Tanka

could I be so bold

to see what the future holds

keep searching ahead

shall we plant a fence of trees

that will outlive you and me?

~cie~

The tree pictured above is an American plum. My son and I want to plant trees that are low-maintenance, suitable for Colorado's nutrient-poor and often dry soil and will attract pollinators. As an added benefit, the fruit of these little beauties is edible, and I spent part of my disability back payment to buy a nice water bath canner. I would like to try my hand at making jams and other preserves.

If we take good care of our trees, they will beautify our little town and bring happiness to future generations. It is our goal to leave things better than we found them. We all need to take better care of our world if we want it to keep taking care of us.

A Rumpled Thing Left Out to Dry

and now, introducing me
when you look at this rumpled old thing
just what is it that you see?

I've spent an entire lifetime
trying to iron myself out
and I claim that I'm almost there

but the truth be told
I feel like I was left
for too long in the spin cycle

I try to tumble dry
the tears from my eyes
as I realize

that I still haven't managed
to warm up to myself
I emerge from each battle with me
dizzy and covered in dryer fuzz

although I have a big body
I mostly feel mighty small
I know people don't care for bulky me
the way they do for silky bits of finery

folks think it's perfectly acceptable
to snub those who look like me
they tell me I'm carrying too big a front load
and I have too much junk in my trunk

when I try to think about me neutrally
I know that I have a good quality or two
I'm an easygoing cuss
a wash and wear kind of gal

I'm definitely not one of your fine delicates
one of those dainty damsels
that dashing heroes like to pick up
like a lace hanky dropped on the floor

ladies whose unlined faces
appear to be permanent press
so long as you machine wash warm
and dry flat

but as these downy chicks
tumbled by life's tide
become wrinkled
they are folded up and put aside

it isn't that the fellows
won't take a tumble with me
it's just that they think of gals like me
as a pre-soak

a warm-up for the dainty delicates
that they drape from their muscular arms
to accessorize their designer suits
when they go out on the town

a pretty little accessory
that they can fluff and fold
and tuck away in a drawer
until they're ready to use her again

I decided to rinse my hands of men
who cycle through women's lives
with all the tenderness of a tropical storm

I don't want to be kept
hanging on the line
with clothespins or lies
waiting for the prairie wind to dry my tears
