With works that could be interpreted as "just have a happy attitude and everything will be fine," I always like to iterate that there is no toxic positivity intended in my words. It's fine to not be fine.
We had a household disaster last night with the demise of the refrigerator that was here when the house was purchased in September 2019. We got a bunch of stuff into the freezer in the pantry, then put some bags of frozen vegetables into the cooler and put the eggs and lunch meat in the cooler. We still had to throw a bunch of stuff out.
I did some research online and my son and I were intending to purchase a refurbished refrigerator from a used appliance store. We were told they wouldn't deliver to our little bump in the road, so I asked if the guy knew where we could get a U-Haul.
"I dunno, there's one in town somewhere," he said.
Big help, Dude. Perhaps he hadn't heard of this thing called the internet, which he had just used to go to Google Maps and look up our town.
Being the tech-savvy prairie witch I am, I used my smartphone to seek out a U-Haul location. The first address we went to was no longer a U-Haul location. At the second place, we spoke to a very helpful lady but ended up deciding we weren't going to purchase a refrigerator from Used Appliance Place.
By the time we paid for the cost of renting a U-Haul, the bargain price wasn't looking like that much of a bargain. Also, as my son pointed out, given the level of "customer service" we encountered at Used Appliance Place, he didn't trust the workmanship of their products. Also, I had been ignoring the fact that the refrigerator still smelled stanky in favor of possibly getting a replacement for our non-working refrigerator at a low price.
We went to Walmart and bought a mini-fridge for $150 to store essentials such as eggs. We found an actual bargain refrigerator for around $600 from Walmart.com, and it will be delivered on October 5. In the meantime, we have to deal with Teeny Fridge, but my son had been wanting to get a mini-fridge for upstairs anyway.
Then I have to drive back to Greeley this morning for my speech therapy appointment. I had an eye appointment in Lafayette on Monday. I try to limit my trips to once a week, so not feeling the love right now.
The point of the Haiga is our attitude of "shit happens" helped us move things along better than if we'd gotten angry and wallowed in it. It's acceptance, not toxic positivity. We aren't happy about having to spend $600 on a new refrigerator. However, it looks like a darn nice refrigerator for the price, and we expect it will be a serviceable appliance.
Toxic positivity is never welcome here. The goal is to move forward and not get mired in the shit life throws at you.
