Love in the Time of Pain

Love in the Time of Pain

The love we feel
When things are going well
Comes easy enough

The test of our mettle
Is the love that we feel
When the road has gone rough

Love in the time of joy
Is a happy dance
Of a springtime song

Love in the time of pain
Is the sky crying tears
In a world gone wrong

Love in the time of joy
Carries you through the day
On angel wings

Love in the time of pain
Makes the soul want to run away
From what the new day brings

A sword through the heart
Reveals the true depth
Of the love within

  1. Definitely true! Is love really love if it can't past the rough road test? I tend to think that love that is always easy and never has to prove itself through tough times is shallow and lacks the depth and meaning of that tried and tested love. Completely agree with the beautifully stated summation of your last stanza :-)

    1. I've always been saddened when I hear of some "great love," where one party leaves the other when the going gets tough. A favorite example is that of the skier Jill Kinmont, who became paraplegic after a horrific accident on the slopes. Her "devoted" boyfriend was done with her when he learned she'd never walk again.
Better for her in the long run to see his true colors, but it hurt terribly in the short run.
      Thanks much for stopping by!

  2. Yes. Love needs to pass those tests.. It has to help you through those times when the sky is heavy as lead and waking up to meet a new day is filled with angst..

    1. I agree. Sometimes it seems as if the only companion is the feeling of loneliness and hopelessness. But to me, the right thing is to continue to care.
      Thanks for visiting!

  4. love is unconditional so it stays whatever the situations but infatuation is only a fair weather friend...so well crafted...

  8. You have presented the contrast very well. Love in the time of pain is perhaps the most singular gift anyone can receive.

    1. It's also one of the most difficult gifts anyone can give. It's both rewarding and heartbreaking.

  11. Love is all of that. It is a test at times we fear we will fail. Great write..

  12. So very true. Nothing says love like a heart that sticks around and adores you, even when your own heart is not feeling at its greatest. I know all about that... And for that reason, I thank the universe for my husband every day--the man is an angel.
